Was a burglary overnight, so doesn't seem to be linked to the protests.

I drove down Portswood high street an hour ago, very quiet with a lot of shops putting their shutters up. The local councillor has spoken to police, they’ve got officers deployed until early morning but are relaxed that the Portswood bit of it will be minor at worst (they monitor social media and aside from a handful of boastful claims from some anonymous accounts there’s nothing of substance to suggest anything will happen).

Mrs Sog has just returned from work and her colleague, who is Nepalese, has a friend (who also has brown skin) in Bristol who texted her to say that her car windscreen has been smashed by a rock.

I'm not being funny, but you must be the most zeitgeist connected poster in history. From what I've read every single issue of the day has a connection to someone you have had contact with in the last 24 hours. It's uncanny.

Whilst we're waiting for all these knob heads to be sentenced, by jury as it seems you all want that (even where not appropriate), perhaps they could be sent to a safe 3rd country until trial date? Say Rwanda?

If the Southport ‘protestor’ can get 3 years for assaulting a copper, with the sheer violence of what was captured on camera at the airport against particularly a female copper and any potentially racially aggravated elements in those prior phases either on the plane, luggage terminal or cafe (the police have to be certain what happened when and where in the chain of events at the trial), the sentences if guilty in the Manchester case could exceed that threshold and more, contingent on any prior track-record as well.

They will almost certainly be incarcerated for the violence against the coppers, I know from experience of working with them many years ago that the cops will want/expect that and the judge won’t accept any grandstanding from their new lawyer. No doubt he will make the most of the stamp in an attempt to reduce the sentence.

The job of confirming the charges has just become more difficult with the original plank of a brief (under investigation for malpractice himself) who posted the stamp video without the rest of the context in the first place being replaced with Aamer Anwar. Not a pleasant character either but in legal terms this is Bashley’s manager being replaced with someone in the Premier League, so the case has to be watertight. 

The cases are totally different in their complexity, especially as we don’t really know yet when the motive was behind the Manchester Airport events, hence trying to get witnesses going back to the flight. Whereas the Southport offence’s motivations aren’t hard to figure.

Those lads are looking at a jail term though, Anwar will make the most of the stamp and try to claim media coverage compromises a fair trial, all the usual tricks of the criminal law trade in high profile cases. Reality is that the first lawyer, Yakoob, was a huge part of the reason for that. He’s had his 5 more minutes of fame. 

You asked a reasonable question, but spoiled it with the pathetic hashtag.

One person had experience of riots in Northern Ireland in the 80’s and I have known him for 12 years. Another person I have never met and probably will never met has her windscreen smashed. Not sure what the big deal is there but if it floats your boat, go for it.

Actually I think the reverse will happen, the EFL getting underway will draw away anyone who was thinking about getting involved as they’ll want to see their team, meet up with friends, usual pub pre-match. Plus the sentences coming through now are a deterrent to the more casual troublemaker. I’ve not seen the weather forecast but a bit of rain might help too.

i wonder who did it as according to Avon police there are no plans for a "far right" protest in Bristol tonight.

Sky have just reported from Bristol live, no sign of any far right whatsoever, streets lined with about 1500 anti-facist protesters with the scene described as very peaceful. Looks like the far right protests dont exist probably much like the brown skinned friend and her car.

I don't think there are any "far right" or even "slightly right of centre" living in Bristol. Lots of "greens" and students though.

so it's nearly 8pm. The "far right" protests should be starting now but the only protesters, aside from a handful in a few random locations are anti racism protesters. Lots of coverage on Sky news about how great the policing is. So much for 100 far right protests. All seems a bit suspect here.

so far on social media the right wing protests have been a couple of blokes in Union Jack flags in Southampton, a bloke with a cross of St George in London and about 3 blokes protected by the police in Brighton. I wouldn't be surprised if all these people are just plain clothes officers acting the part to make it least appear like it wasn't all a load of bollocks to scare people.

Very heart warming so far at least 🤞 to see the amount of people out in a show of strength against the rioters/thugs/right wingers.  Could be that one of the silver linings of the dark cloud that has been hanging over us since Southport is that normally-silent majority of progressive citizens that make up this country become more united and active in opposition to the the angry mob.  Seeing colourful, peaceful, defiant protesters out in their thousands is great.  As someone who can be a bit cynical about the value protesting and demonstrating, it's times like this when I get it.

When all this settles down we shouldn't overlook the genuine concerns that have been lost in the whipped-up orgy of violence and hate.  And there are certainly lessons to be learned by authorities and all of us (particularly a few on this forum) about the toxic power of social media to turn fiction into catalyst.  But make no mistake those who caused this rupture, on the back of the suffering of children and their families in Southport, have no excuses for their behaviour.

To be fair, and I may be jumping ahead again, but looks like I was wrong earlier, Bristol, Brighton, Southampton, so far, have shown that the anti racist crowd is much much bigger, peaceful, and the edl lot are only a handful of slightly sheepish gammon struggling to get themselves arrested.

Hopefully stays that way through the evening.

That's why I said I was wrong, although there is a lot of data that shows systemic racism and issues across the board, at least it seems like we can rely on overt racism still being taboo and it has been nice to see people standing up for diversity.

Are there stats on systemic racism compared to other countries? What about in comparison to Eastern Europe? Italy? China? Russia? India? Argentina?

Well it would be helpful when saying that Britain is a racist country to know in comparison to where. If the stats show that it is significantly less racist than the vast majority of other countries in the world then I'd say that's pretty good news. There's always something to work on of course but if that is the case it would be a positive news story to my mind.

Look, a little advice from someone who went in 2 footed after 2 bottles of wine last night (apologies @hypochondriac, I'm a proper lush), I don't disagree with a lot of the sentiment that you put across, the issue is you put it across is such a fucking sanctimonious way. Everybody criticises you because of the way you post, not necessarily what you post. And please stop talking about the Barrister you met down the pub, or the specialist gunmaker that you see in the butcher, or the NASA scientist that your wife plays rummy with on a Thursday night. It makes you seem sooo fucking disingenous.

Small protest in Bournemouth, about 150 outside Roundhouse hotel where immigrants are housed. Also a counter-protest on the other side of the road. No arrests and people dispersed about 11pm. Looks like the very harsh sentences handed out this week have done the trick, even the morons realise it simply not worth it. However, the problem is not going away, the new Labour government means even more immigrants coming in, we have no idea what people are coming into our country. IMO, this will all kick off again, sadly.
