On 5live at half time they said Ronaldo has never scored in the knockout stages of a World Cup but his replacement today scored in his first one within half an hour.

Fonte was on as a half time pundit, he was gushing over how Portugal were playing as a team with everyone closing down and doing their share of defensive work.

ITV commentator saying that several teams have training camps out in the Middle East so that their players can join them immediately after they go out of the world cup. Wonder why ABK and Salisu have seemingly been given a week's break in our case? (Unless they're expected to join up with the squad in Spain any time now?)

Agree with the first bit but I can’t say it’s depressing, personally. Targets like this are always going to be a bit of a long shot for Saints.

But to discover the gems before on others radar is/was our MO.
Oh to have just have got one decent forward last summer.

I wonder if there are any 'starlets' on the fringes of national squads that didn't qualify for the world cup that we may be looking at, and have a better chance of signing because they haven't been under the world cup spotlight? Italy, for example?

An italian striker is just what we need to steer us away from relegation

Perhaps because players have too much power these days and the likes of ABK/Salisu aren’t gonna respect Jones the way they might if we had a Pep/Klopp, so best to keep em happy if they want a week off.
Also, we’re 19th and football in the last few months hasn’t been fun at all, I can only hope the pair of them use the week to come back refreshed and ready to attack the second half.

As you asked so nicely @Ted Bates Statue & @Turkish.

A friend of mine at a Saints invited fans thing, in no rush to get home after and always one to be nosey got chatting to Martin Semmens. He said they chatted for a good 45 minutes and (if you met my friend you would get this) “he was in no hurry to get me on my way - very happy to chat”. As he was excitedly telling me of his conversation slipped in “Did you know we were in for Connor Coady” only the usual rumor on here, my reply. “Well it’s was pretty a done deal to get him on loan, Martin Semmens drove up to his house with the contracts etc to start the final process”. “Can you believe the reason he turned us down? - he didn’t want to play in a back 5 which Ralph had decided to play all pre season - that’s why he wanted to get away from Wolves”.

So who knows how hard we sold Saints to these 2 lads.  With it being World Cup year these 2 players  people could have suggested “ what’s the point of going to Southampton, a team that struggles just to get into the Premier league - you’re in your national squad stay a little longer and see how the WC pans out for you”. - “And we’ll discuss it after Christmas”.
People in football know what’s going on in football beyond what is surmised on these pages, the fact that Ralph was on borrowed time was likely no secret inside Football, so for a youngster making a move onto the Saints stepping stone - their futures at Saints might have some clouds on the horizon. Just like Coady was primed ready to sign on loan before the season started, then we suddenly start pre season games with 5 at the back, and he’s going “hang on that’s exactly what I am trying to get away from”. Rumour was both these strikers were a long way through the signing process - did weight of uncertainty surrounding the management at Saints raise doubts as to whether the move was really right. Maybe if we’d pulled the trigger on Ralph at the end of the season they would be Saints players now. Our opening games might have added to those doubts, just as having a mid season World Cup likely did - it’s not as if both players were having to play their way into the Dutch and Portuguese squads.

MY EDIT WAS DUE TO MY IPAD ABOUT TO DIE SO I SAVED - AND SOME OF YOU JUMPED IN (@ 1am !!)BEFORE I’D FINISHED. Sorry

I've read that three times and I'm still non the wiser as to what you're implying.

We are the least impressive and surprisingly least technically gifted side left in the World Cup.

so it’s coming home. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Eh?  I mean Morocco for a start, but 'least technically gifted' What are you on about? Foden, Grealish, Kane, Bellingham, Saka, Mount, Rashford, we have a forward line that matches anyone left in the competition. I mean everyone is raving about Brazil who have an ex-Leeds player who has been struggling at Barca and a back up Spurs player making up their forward line. Argentina are relying on an aging Messi, plus and France Mbappe aside are relying on a 36 year old Giroud and Greizeman who is a shadow of the player he used to be, along with Dembele who less than a year ago Barca were desperately trying to sell to anyone that would have him.

I know England teams tend to get over rated in the past but this one is as easily as good as anyone else left in the competition, especially attacking wise, especially with the depth we have in attack. Defensively there are more issues granted, but none of those other teams are particularly special at the back, 39 year old Pepe as an example or Argentina playing Otamendi as first choice centre-back.

Great to see Gakpo and Ramos in form during the World Cup. They’ll be full of confidence when they return for Boxing Day.

In an alternative world Gakpo and Ramos are currently with the saints squad in Spain training after not playing for 3 months whilst they’re learning Ralphball. Meanwhile Portugal and Holland are on the flight home from Qatar

Cheers. So basically it was an open secret Ralph was on his way out and Cody didn’t want to play in a back 5, a system that was ditched after 1 1/2 games into the season after conceding 6 goals 🤦

How come the Police can make arrests 3 days after a burglary at Raheem Stirling's house, when for you and I it is likely it would not even get recorded ?

Robbers got greedy and/or  the rozzers got lucky - as some light fingered sorts got caught burgling a house round the corner from Stirlings 2 nights later - can’t see the PR department of Surrey Plod turning down a freebie like that; even if it turns out to be a different band of robbers.

What a load of old fucking pony.

Don’t give me the bollocks about Brazil, we’d have torn Sk a new one had they played like that against us (without the noddy dancing as well). Our attack and midfield are the match of anything I’ve seen in this WC. If the keeper, Centre halves and Luke Shaw step up to the plate, we’re the match of any side out there. Least impressive? My arse.
