Superb final, will go down as Greatest World Cup of all time?

Expand

The greatest final, perhaps, but there were quite a few 0-0s earlier on and aside from France and Argentina, none of the decent teams really turned up. Germany and Belgium were very poor, Italy not present, Brazil, Portugal and Spain all substandard, England about par for the course but nothing more.

A very good WC overall but I’m not sure if it was the best.

I think it was good because some of the best teams didn't turn up. It gave the other teams more chance and the games more even.

The gap between best and worst in the World Cup has narrowed a bit which is better for the tournament.

Out of curiosity what made you watch on ITV? I like McCoist and Keane is ok but that’s about it. Pougatch, Matterface, adverts all made BBC an easy choice. I like Jenas, Zabaletta, Rio and the commentators are all pretty good.

I wouldn't have called this back in November after Saudi Arabia beat Argentina.

It's been a great world cup to be fair, obviously lots of controversy and crap around it, but from a pure footballing point of view the final summed it up for me. A great watch the last month, even the groups were entertaining until the death.

It’s the one that matters. We took the knee, we made a stand and we did it all by playing fairly and nicely. I’d rather take the knee and win the fair play league than win the whole thing without any virtue signalling

Yes, but I can't recall a better final. It was f**king brilliant.

I wonder if the tournament, and this epic final, was so good because it was played in the middle of the season, rather than at the end of a grueling season when players are knackered? Not that I'd want it played in the winter again, but just a thought.

I watched on BBC but flicked over at end as thought they had better pundit panel. Can’t stand Matterface but Pougatch is ok. Rio does my head in a bit - too fawning. Going on about average players gaze twice, world class players gaze five times. This sort of nonsense I can do without. But yes generally ITV is shite

Although fitness played a part in a better extra time than usual , even the tactics were good to make the game play better. Every final i’ve personally watched usually consists of defensive cautious football for a 1-0 but this one was two teams putting bodies on the line to get forward and there could have been so many more goals, it was end to end just before the final whistle.

There was a fitness expert on the radio before the start of the tournament saying we should see much better football because it is mid-season, looks like he was right.

It’s just a shame the atmosphere at most of the games was shocking, can’t compare it to Italia 90.

Some of the blokes at St Mary's have bigger tits than the women. Wonder if any of them will start flapping their moobs around if we beat Lincoln?

Why not appreciate both? I really dont get the hate on social media towards one or the other as we've been very fortunate to see two players at this level for so many years. Messi has been my number 1 and this cements it, but Ronaldo has silly records/numbers in his career too. It has been a terrible few months for Ronaldo's stock but he's had a great run

Embarrassing. Has a side ever won the Fair Play trophy and lifted the World cup in the same tournament? My guess would be no and it's why we'll always struggle to win the big prizes - too meek, too mild,  not ruthless enough and no cajonas.

I watched ITV because Jenas is a twat, Linekar is a smug twat & Rio isn’t particularly good. Dixon is pretty hopeless but McCoist is the best around and Keane is great although I’m not too sure about his Billy Connelly look. I’m also didn’t see the point of the two birds they cut to, ticking a box I guess. They added nothing to th3 discussion.

Agree, they’re both are brilliant players, the best in the world by some distance in their era but there seems to be a view that if you prefer one you have to hate the other. That twat Piers Morgan peddles all that nonsense. Messi is my preferred too but it’s been a joy to see two such outstanding players at the top of their game at the same time for so long.

I caught a few, tea making, mins just before half time on BBC radio. The commentator was about to tell us what a lovely stadium it was. But made sure to trot out that "there had been some problems with the construction" first. So glad the Beeb hordes are there to preface the odd sentence or two.

Then it was a couple mins on how France were woeful and "had lost their identity." Not a jot on how the game had gone tactically. Why were Argentina better? Why had France had to make subs? What had happened? No idea. They're not capable of moving on from winners= all good things; losers=all bad things. They were more interested in their bubble world where another commentator was blocking their view. Tea made, and the rubbish was switched off.

Caught the last couple of mins and pens on ITV.

It was a brilliant final, a great watch. Argentina thought they'd won it at least twice before they did, and I think Angel Di Maria is due a heart attack after watching his emotions through the game. Fair play to Mbappe for stepping up when his team around him wasn't but there's only one GOAT and that's Messi. You could see the Argies wanted this more.

And back to domestic football where we've all temporarily forgotten how harsh football can really be!

Didn’t watch the final in the end - may as well have been a fix. FIFA wanted ‘their team’ to win and they did…it was all so predictable. I think the best thing about the final was seeing Mbappe scoring three and still losing, given how he laughed so loudly at beating England. Karma served us well today.

Living across the pond I watched it on American TV Fox, with a couple of Yanks commentating. I thought they were surprisingly good, making a lot of good observations and avoiding inane nonsense. One of them remarked that the French midfield was being over run and the manager should bring on a sub before half time which duly happened shortly afterwards.

If you're able to watch the Telemundo airing of the game on replay, worth listening to the commentator, in hysterics, spent, weeping as the winning penalty is scored.

Didn't most neutrals want Argentina to win as well?

Why was the French president invited to the presentation ceremony if they wanted the opposition to win so badly?

Surely the game itself and Messi finally lifting the trophy was the best thing about the final?

As footballers I admire, and have enjoyed watching both of them. But my comment was based on personalities, Messi for me comes across as the more humble person whilst Ronaldo both on and off the pitch gives off "it's all about me" vibes . I'd  be very happy to have either of them in my team the pitch  but there's only one I'd want in my dressing room and it wouldn't be CR7.
