Thanks for that input, can I ask how you have drawn that conclusion, it seems to come from a position of direct knowledge, do you follow Luton?

No, my family run a mental health charity in England, I oversee some aspects, remotely now, and as part of that we attend charity functions during the year with football clubs, mainly to build relationships, to get funding etc.. Through these functions, you meet alot of people from alot of clubs, and they like to drink, relax and talk football. And they love to opine about other football clubs. So, I have heard millions of conversations about all sorts of things over the years. I don't know Nathan Jones, but I know he's highly thought of by alot of people.

I'd say unsure. It's impossible to form a really strong opinion either way as I don't know him, I've never really watched Luton and I didn't really pay any attention to his time at Stoke. If I was a neutral fan and Wolves were looking to appoint him I'd go ''WTF?'' though, so I can understand the concern fans have.

You look from the outside and say that he's overachieved at Luton, but sometimes managers are in a comfort zone at a club which just works for them. That feels as if it could be the case here. But he's clearly not stupid though, he's pulled a Luton team from nowhere to the Championship playoffs so he must have something about him.

So I'm unsure, it's impossible to say. A 'name' manager would have certainly got the fans on side and created a bit of a bounce, so in that sense this feels like a bit of a missed opportunity by the club to create a much needed feel good factor.  The main concern I have is that we have an incredibly inexperienced team at PL level, certainly in age - adding an inexperienced manager and coaching staff to that mix doesn't feel like the most sensible thing to do at this moment in time.

I'd say no, he lacks experience and his teams don't play a style of football that is going to get results in the Premier League he reminds me of Billy Davies.  Watching his mannerisms in interviews concerns me as well he doesn't exactly exude calm confidence!  If he gets the job I will support him like I did back when Sturrock and Wigley got the job but I really think we could do better.

I am a yes

he is young and British. He has learnt his trade and has had a lot of relative success. He was manager of the year last season for the Football League. He deserves a chance.

I am excited about a new beginning and can’t wait to get behind him. Be good to have a big personality in charge too.

Big personality, have you seen the man interviewed?

Has everyone watched Ted Lasso? I think it might be the right analogy here!  Hilarious opening episode in which everyone is rolling their eyes at his crazy appointment, and not without reason. And then, and then, somehow, miraculously the guy charms everyone, including the players and miracles start to happen.   So I vote yes on Nathan.  I understand the SR guys have known him well for a long time. They're really smart.  They see what isn't obvious.     This is our Ted Lasso moment!!!!

well according to the sky reporter outside St Marys Saints fans are overjoyed with this appointment "every single one of them has spoken about his passion and pride" and there is a real positivity about his energy and enthusiasm which they are looking forward to seeing.  i guess they haven't spoken to anyone who posts on here

Perhaps I’ll drop by in a mo and give the charlatan a fookin good leathering - just so they get both sides of the argument 😉

I voted unsure. Not normally a fence-sitter but in this instance I think we must give the guy a chance. How does anyone ever get out of the 'no PL experience trap'? How many of us have older kids who have faced the same Catch 22 dilemma looking for their first job but need experience to get that job?

Not playing holier than thou - confess my first reaction was Who? WTF? Underwhelmed. But having slept on it and watched a couple of his interviews I'm more relaxed. Think Ankerson and SR know what they're doing enough to have done their homework. Would have liked to have seen Thomas Frank come to us, but Jones will get my full support until he doesn't as someone else said before me!

Nobody seems to have mentioned the biggest elephant in the room - he's Welsh FFS! 😳😊

Voted no, purely because I don’t think this is the time to be fucking about with a gamble like this. A third of the season has gone already and we’re clearly in big trouble as it is. Perhaps if he’d been bought in during the summer and had some transfers behind him then it would be worth the risk, but by the time we find out if he’s the man for us it’ll either be safety or relegation, there won’t be another chance to make a change and keep us up.

Anyone noticed all the Jones “ news” is from the Luton side ? Strikes me Luton want rid and of course the money. The Stoke game last night was dire and Jones post match interview made him sound like a nutter.

Have Saints actually mentioned him( I may be wrong ) it really seems Luton driven bullshit.

No idea who the guy is, what he does, what his teams are like, or anything, so I'll just wait and see.

I do suspect though that if he'd had a job for a Serie B team and had them near the top and been called Jose Netesto or something, fans might be more 'excited'? Just a hypothesis.

I think our experience with Pellegrino and Poortvliet has taken the sheen off "foreigners good, British bad".

If we took the manager of middling Serie B (##googles##) Cagliari and his biggest job was a disastrous time at (###I know this one, Paul Rideout###) Bari in Serie B then I think a lot of talk would still be sceptical and unconvinced.

I voted no but that was with absolutely zero knowledge of him, and that is the main issue.

His lack of experience is glaring, and will make it hard for him to win over fans and players.

Thanks to Ralph he doesn't have the luxury of a honeymoon period. He'll need to get crucial points from Brighton,  Fulham, Forest Everton, Villa, and Brentford in January. That takes Saints to 21 games.

He'll need at least 10 from 18 points to give a reasonable launch pad for survival. We can also be certain the other teams will be looking to bury Saints as its a proper dog eat dog season.

If he doesn't get near that mark then real panic will set in.

So much depends on those games and the January transfers.

It is an incredible leap of faith to see him succeed. Too much of a gamble imo, but I really hope it pays off.

I would add to the above that I had never heard of Hasenhuttl so when I googled him it was difficult to see where he had actually put a foot wrong. His record was actually superb, because it was only his sacking at RB that was a blemish but that seemed like a personality clash rather than failure. He probably had the best record of anyone we had ever recruited. Compared to Koeman which was streaky/patchy when he arrived and continued to be so after us.

It's clearly not bullshit as Luton officially stated they have granted us permission to speak to him.

It's highly unlikely Saints will make any official statement until the new manager is announced. I suspect if anything Saints are a bit annoyed that Luton made it public.

I'm saying no based on the fact that I want to manage Saints and am extremely miffed about being overlooked again.

I had started a "Cat In" campaign in my household not 5 minutes before you posted!

Admittedly, it's due to it raining outside and his fur getting wet, but happy to combine goals. 🙂

Why would anybody take any notice of SR's judgement as a seal of approval when we know b***** all about the man. Was it his judgement that kept Ralph here long after it was obvious to everyone else that he had run out of ideas and credibility and should have been shown the exit at the end of last season? Was it his judgement that Watson, Davies & the other coach were the people holding Ralph back and that they would be booted out? That worked out well didn't it?  Now they're gone we seem to be in a worse mess than ever and it wasn't the solution anyway.

Nope, you have to earn trust and respect before your judgement can be relied upon and we've seen nothing yet to put any of us in that position.

OK if you own the Club then you can dictate pretty much what happens at management level without the accord of others least of all lapdog fans who cough up £50 odd quid every other week to watch the dire rubbish that is being served up but don't let's confuse the arrogance of ownership with good judgement.

The appointment of Jones will in my view be an act of self harm that will see us drop a division and stay there for a very long time.

I’m not sure you can take much sensible commentary from people who arrive that early for a football match and aren’t club employees

Almost voted unsure yesterday but thought I'd sleep on it. Having done so I've voted NO. It's just such a one star tin pot proposition. If I/we're unrealistic in wanting someone a bit more inspiring then I think we are truly fucked at this level.

I read a BBC article earlier where he seemed very non-committal and gave the impression that it was a long way from a done deal. I'm still hoping this is the case. Don't want a Stoke failure anywhere near us (and yes I know Strachan took Coventry down but he had Premiership experience and actually a playing career of note). Are our band of internationals going to be looking at Jones and thinking 'he's the guy to help me advance my career'?

I couldn't be more underwhelmed and it feels like a throwback to the cheapskate RL days. Wholly depressing when you consider the proven calibre of manager that Villa and Wolves have managed to attract. All for giving young homegrown talent a chance at the right time, a la Nige, but our Premiership survival is at stake. This is not the time to be taking a risky punt and hoping for the best.

To be honest you need to admire sports Republic's courage of their conviction.

This change is not cheap and rasmus has put balls on the line with this left field one.

Anyway am stoked at least a manager whose done great things at a much smaller club has been given the opportunity rather than some numpty with a name.

I for one will be behind him 100% until the 1st team is picked. 😜

Absolutely disgusting, £4m for an unknown entity, cannot believe they haven’t gone for an experienced manager in this situation we find ourselves in at the cheap price of £4m! - bringing in a expensive gamble when we need a bounce, a guy who has been in this fight before, a guy with a reputation, a manager who will attract a calibre of striker we need to get us out of this mess.

If folk done their job in the summer and Ralph had been given a goal scoring striker or even two target men, we’d no have been in this mess having no been able to find the net to win a match. £4-f*****g-million - there’s your excuse for no money for a decent striker in January + Ralph’s pay-off.

**On the note of a striker, how the hell does it take a day or two to get a manager in place, but takes a year and more to buy a striker who can find the net in the EPL. If by some miracle SR do splash the cash for a striker this January (they’ll have their pants pulled down for that anaw in the January sales) you’re damn certain they’ll no have them coming in 1st/2nd Jan when we need them desperately, they’ll sign on or the day before deadline day 24 games into the season when we’re seven points adrift of the pack, it’s the Southampton way.

It looks bleak and I’m completely dejected by this appointment, it feels like we are gambling with our EPL status and when we only have Liverpool (A) before the break it’s going to be a dour Xmas sitting in the relegation zone. The latter festive period/January games when we have Brighton (H), Fulham (A), Nottm Forest (H), Villa (H), Brentford (A) and Wolves (H) is going to make or break us, he might have to perform miracles as Ralph seemed to muster when he needed to find points, ground them out and possibly without any new striker too, unless we have someone in the door 1st Jan, we are going to struggle for goals to beat the teams that we need to beat around us, are we ever that pro-active, or just with a manager in Jones’ case? 🙄

I just hope it works out, I feel this could be the season that we’ll be stuck back in the Championship for years without a Liebherr-style investment to get us out of it after SR inevitably sell all our young stars we’ve tried to invest in.
