Agreed, but can we afford to waste these opportunities whilst JWP is perfecting his art.

I think there must also be a bit of ......what are the waiting players doing - when those crosses come in?

JWP is fairly accurate, but sometimes we have " stationary figures " in the box who ought..... at least to be moving around / going for those crosses....

I think even Frank Lampard was still learning when he was 20.

Needs a goal, he gets in some good positions, I'm sure he'll come good.

I thought Tadic was going to lay it off to him when mane took the pish out of Cahill...

tadic did create good space for himself mind. good block by their defender

I think Lampard would say he is still learning now. One of the old school who trained hard and put in extra time on honing his skills. As did David Beckham.

Absolutely. A model professional if ever I saw one.

In JWP 's case (as it's his thread) I think we need to keep faith with his development, (but the occasional goal would silence some of his more vocal critics).

Shameless levels of plugging I know, but I've written this week's Shoot Saints blog on James Ward Prowse making his 100th appearance for Saints. Any compliments or criticisms would be really helpful, thanks.

Well balanced article - from my perspective I am not looking for him to dominate a game or wrestle control of it, but more I am just waiting to see him define himself as a player. A part of that will be settling on a position and then making it his own. At the moment he has gaps in his skillset playing as an attacking midfielder and a defensive midfielder, and it's not good enough at the level we need to play at just to be 'ok' at the moment (especially in the centre of the park).

100 appearances in and we're still not too sure what his best position is because we're not sure what sort of player he is, so that will need to come soon, but he should definitely be afforded the opportunity to find it.

Well done on a sensible appraisal of JWP who is slowly growing on me, but one thing on the grammar (sorry pedant alert). You say "Saints fans" with no apostrophes which is fine but then you say "Saints's triumph". I long ago stopped the comma bit because Saints fans or Saints triumph are like simple nouns being described. Does that make sense? Probably not!

With "Saints fans", Saints is modifier for the noun "fans." Whereas in "Saint's triumph", the triumph belongs to Saints - this is a possessive case and requires the apostrophe. Hope this helps!

Not quite as reliable as Davis, who isn't as reliable as some others. He's decent though, and doesn't make so many mistakes that leave me on the edge of my seat/instill so little confidence every match, like Targett does. Think he's got a lot more than 'set-piece delivery', though I think with an on-form Tadic and with Virgil able to take freekicks, it's not as big requirement.

That being said, I do think he's very very good at finding space for the man on the ball, and is fairly reasonable at passing the ball about the park. He's not got an incredible shot, but that's not such a big necessity when he plays deeper and deeper just in front of the back four. Crossing is excellent, and he did a fine job on the right wing against Utd (against, to be fair, Rojo, so not exactly world class but still).

If by "Saint's triumph" you mean "the triumph belongs to a Saint", (one individual Saint) you are right, if not, the triumph belongs to Saints would be "Saints' triumph" or if you like "Saints's triumph" (but I just think that looks ugly nowadays and it is rarely used), because Saints as a single unit referring to the football club is singular.

It's not even that easy to explain because triumph is a noun and a verb and "the Saints triumph" can refer to the triumph belonging to Saints (the Saints' triumph) or the act of triumphing (The Saints triumph) as used in newspaper headlines which also changes where the apostrophe is.

So to clarify, I'm using cat instead:

"The Saint's cat" is a cat belonging to an individual Saint.

"The Saints' cat" is a cat belonging to the football club.

" The Saints " is a football club, which is one group of Saints.

Does anyone think of the word "Saints" as having its original meaning of religious holy people any more? To me it's just a sound that means the shortened form of Southampton (from a Football perspective), like the word Soton (for the city), devoid of any other context or usage. It was weird to me just then to think about it further and realise that our name means exceptionally holy people that have been canonised by the Vatican.

  • 2 years later...
Young, english, 4-5 years left on his contract, over 100 PL apperances.

£10m? Have watford been on the sauce?

£30m+. (I'd expect a similar price to Greleash or Maddison if we were to sell him).

Exactly. Richarlison money in their bank account too, £30m would be the level.

But ... (and I am just putting the counter argument here, not my own opinion) .. we have just been offered £10M for a bench player. We have to sell to buy, and that £10-15M (if we make them a counter offer) would allow us to bring in a striker. Where do we see our greater need - a goal scorer, or another water carrier?

My own opinion FWIW - turn it down, we're not selling him.

I can't see how it's a case that we have to sell to raise revenue, I think it is to do with FFP and our wage ceiling, well I hope so anyway....

If we could have got rid of Fraser it would have helped a lot.....but given he's still here, I think it's pretty clear that we're paying him obscene wages which no club are prepared to match. That leaves us in a pretty crappy situation in terms of being able to add additions.

If it was just down to selling to raise funds, then we’d have seen the likes of Tragett, Gallagher and Reed go IMO.

Do you think we could get an upgrade on Long, Gabbiadini, Gallagher or Austin for £10-15m?

I don't buy it - under FFP you can increase the wage bill by £7m each year, plus apply additional commercial and player trading revenue to increase your wage ceiling if you want. We've removed two of our most senior players from last year's wagebill (Tadic and VVD) and haven't replaced them with anyone who'd command anything like an established PL wage. I wouldn't be at all surprised if you could cover all our incoming wages this season just from the space freed up by Tadic and VVD, without even touching the additional £135k a week FFP allows you to add as a baseline.

We aren't buying because we're cash constrained in terms of transfer fees, not wages.

Forget the Vatican, our Saints come from St Mary's the mother church of Southampton as I am sure you know

£10 mil, I’d bite their ****ing hands off. He plays like he’s washed up and he’s still youngish. Wake up and smell the coffee, he’s not going to improve

Have I now morphed into Lord Duckhunter? I will drive him up to Watford myself. Mr Ploddy Plod, not Lord Duckhunter

You seriously think you could replace him for £10m? It constantly amazes me that he has so many detractors who can't see what he brings to the team.

An attacking three of JWP, Elyounoussi and Armstrong/Redmond could be very effective.

Ludicrous. I still think he can be one of our more effective midfielders this season. There is a lot more to him than dead ball situations.

How many years has someone said that this season will be his break through year ? Every manager he’s had has tried to find a place for him only to end up benching him again eventually, most sooner rather than later.

If there is more to him than being the go to dead ball specialist then I’m still to see it.
