Why do you feel we can’t replace Vesty? We are getting on with it as we speak. If we sign his replacement will you feel stupid for being reactionary?

I really didn’t.

We don’t know we are trying to buy him.

We don’t know if he is injured or how long he is injured for.

We may be buying someone else.

Other than that, great points 👍

Wanyama was despised on this forum 'not fit to wear the shirt' and all that talk 'faking illness and never fit' but now he is suddenly better than JWP who hasn't missed match for two years. Why don't some fans appreciate players while we have them?

See this has been resoundingly derided and rightly so.

"You do not just get past Victor Wanyama"  There was a meme going round in those days with a pic of Vic below that statement (or something like it) which was superb.

edit:  we could so do with him now at his best

He hated saints fans after racist song that was adopted for him. That’s why he left

Given the current circumstances would take the 50m. However, we are less than two weeks away from the transfer window shutting. This deal needed to be done way before first team training started again. It takes us two weeks just to identify a target, let alone start talks etc. Think for this reason he stays until the end of the season now.

Wanyama was twice the player Prowsey is

The guy currently playing in the MLS and has been there two years and hes only 30.

Twice the size maybe, twice the ability? not even close. He was a good DM for us but not anything special and his career has fallen apart.

1. That’s bollocks

2. Wanyama was twice the player Prowsey is, and we never did replace him properly.

Lol im not so sure, wanyama could not manage to pass 5 yards most of the tine so not so sure he was twice the player jwp is, was a good ball winner in a pretty solid team lead by a good manager with tadic at his best and co... but thats about it, OR is better than wanyama can pass more than 5 yards.

Any way, this place has always hated jwp, only have to go through the history on him to see it, never been appreciated, this place ( some posters any way) claimed jwp was nothing more than a than a league 1 player at best.

Some claimed redders was always going to be better than jwp and was always going to score more goals and get more assists and be worth far more and be are best player and blah blah blah... Hahaha

We sell jwp this window we will go down, thats over 70% of our goals and assists last season gone in jwp n ings...  And no way to replace with equal or even just as good players, 50 mill for jwp is peanuts when white after 1 season in the epl has gone to gunners for that price...

Not sure if “despised” is the right word but he certainly divided opinion and came in for some stick from some quarters. They were different types of player and whilst Wanyama was solid for us I think JWP has more in his locker.

Ok been away for a few days. Can someone explain how we’ve gone from a fans forum statement saying “No chance JWP will be sold” to “£50 million and we talk”?

The transfer window's still open and journalists have been creating stories on the basis of what happened earlier in the window.

No chance JWP actually moves this window, we don't want to sell, Villa can't afford what we'd want if we did, and JWP isn't going to force through a move to a team that's just sold their best player and is facing just as uncertain a season as we are.

With 2 weeks to go I would be shocked if we sold him now. I think he is next season’s transfer budget or the loan payment to cover drop if relegation happens as likely with our squad. 68 goals conceded and weaker defensively no cover for where we struggled.
We have 2 weeks to get central defender and Romeu cover.

Saintsweb transfer rumour rule number 4 - If a Saints player looking for a move out of the club says he is injured then he is definitely faking it to force a move, the lying prick.  If a player from another club that we may be interested in says they are injured, they are definitely injured and therefore a useless pile of shit.

You think/hope that's the case, but you have no idea what the truth is - I could also guess and say the exact opposite. The reality is that we don't know what he wants, or what the club actually feel about taking the cash now.

Personally, and although I'm not his biggest fan, selling him this window would be mental. We'd have ripped the spine out of the team and that wouldn't end well. However, him leaving sometime soon has a feeling of inevitability about it.

You are JWP's biggest fan/relative and so rightfully always pump him up.

White is not worth 50m in my opinion, but he got into the final England squad instead of JWP and so perhaps would make him more valuable. I think you put that JWP is on a mere 50K pw, I suggest that he may be easier to prise away if his wages are going to jump.

If I was a player with ambition I wouldn't stay here as you would see all the quality being ripped out around you and is bound to deflate

Let's be honest he's probably not 30 is he.

Where did this £50m fee actually come from? From what I can gather, an Athletic opinion piece suggested Villa would need to spend half the Grealish money and then the Echo just ran with it and then subsequently Birmingham live too.

Everyone who is so happy for us to sell.......but are you all confident we'd invest properly?

No of course not. Our policy is that of a mid to top Championship club, ie, bring in hungry young players, improve them and sell for a profit.

That isnt sustainable in the Prem UNLESS you occasionally take from the top table if you want to stay there.

Even back in the old "you win nothing with kids" Man Utd days they had experienced players in their squad. What the hell have we got ? Oh yeah, Theo !

Well that's a nice twist. I'd imagine he'll be our highest earner in the £80,000 p/w region.

Knowing what ings was offered I would imagine that pay rise went to prowsy instead, north of 100k

I believe we did have a £100k cap, but that could have gone. Either way, this is going to upset the trolls, doom merchants and general stirrers.

Nice big pay rise, ensures we won’t lose him for nothing if/when he does go. We all know contracts mean sod all. Everyone’s a winner it would appear.

Obvious that the deal has a "gentleman's agreement" built into it that is big enough to land a helicopter on.

He has another good season, and there is interest, he's gone next summer.

But he's not gone this summer, so it shuts up the dins on here for another year.

Emile Smith Rowe and JWP both heavily linked to Villa, submitted various ‘bids’ for both, both signed new deals at their respective clubs.

Seems Villa have been used a bit.

We're not supposed to be able to hold onto our best players. FFS how can I use this as a stick to beat the club with now???

Agreed a release clause for next summer otherwise that £100k a week wage will be a millstone round our neck in the championship next season

Am i warm?

Protects the asset and resale value, and in turn shows loyalty from him. Great news IMO.

Re-title the thread and sticky it for all to see.

Not sure why we’d sign him up to a bumper new deal to put a release clause in it that could be activated next summer. Would be better to save the wages if we intend to sell him next year, given he’d still have 3 years left at the point.

IF...JWP wanted to go (to Villa or Spurs) as suggested by the media, there is no way he would sign this new deal. This is great news.

Even the Villa forums have locked this thread up.

Ultimately, he was tied down until 2025 anyway, so in theory would have retained his value until 2023...

win-win for both parties this - he gets a payrise, and hopefully for us we receive his peak playing years for at least next 3/4 years

Well worthy of it - it would be very satisfying if he can now go on to beat Beckham's FK record whilst in our shirt.
