Villa fan here, not taking the piss - and I absolutely respect that you feel JWP/Ings is a sideways step. Saints should definitely be valuing JWP at 50m+ I think,

Unfortunately, villa aren’t a sidewards step anymore. They should be, but lack of ambition from our ownership means you are much more of an attractive option.

I think you mean lack of money. Ambition doesn’t come into it if you haven’t got a pot to piss in.

Good luck next season. Unfortunately for you guys, signings like Ings just put you in 5th-11th territory with West Ham, Everton, Arsenal, Spurs, Leeds and Leicester. Admittedly above where we’re likely to be scrapping but I can’t see you taking it to the next level.

Was more in reference to them giving false hope, probably quoted the wrong post.

I think we all agree that as soon as he wasn’t going to sign, we needed to Sell and 30m isn’t a bad deal.

Him going to villa, further demonstrating our lack of ambition and inability to compete in this league, is a very bitter pill to taste.

The worst thing is, i’m not even shocked.

For someone not shocked, you dont half keep on banging on about it.

I think Ings going to Villa says more about him than it does us tbf !

I think once a player has told the club that he won't sign a new contract and he's in his last year, there is always a chance that he ends up at a club that he previously had no intention of joining, spurred on by his agent telling him that he can get a better club than is really likely or realistic.

Villa are a bigger club than us to be honest, let's be realistic, I remember 1982 when they won the European Cup....

JWP will be gone as soon as someone - whether it's Villa or Leicester - flashes enough cash to tempt the powers that be.  Forget loyalty as well, that won't count for anything.

Can't think of anyone who has regressed, Redmond maybe? But he was always a bit crap and had arguably one good season with us total.

Yes, he is exactly the player he was at Norwich before joining us, no better - no worse

Left winger, who’s playing in the 10, I believe. Didn’t watch him last season though, so perhaps he’s been played more centrally?

Yep, Cantwell definitely more central than wide.

Some interesting comments from villas ceo. Freakish gone and they have got the players in place now - no mention of signing anyone else etc - link to his Twitter video is over on one of the other threads

Best of luck mate. My best friend at primary school was a villa fan so I've always looked out for your results. Ings is class and should do a good job for you although it's undoubtedly a blow to lose your talisman, if you're like us you will spread the money about and have a more balanced team at the end of it. Always better not to be relying on one superstar and I hope we can take that advice as well now we have lost Danny.

He's gone around a bit. Was quite good for a season when everyone else was crap. To be honest I think he is superb against championship oppo and looks like a great prem player and one of our star assets but dreadful against prem oppo and looks like a bad championship player. It's so weird. He is so much more effected by it than everyone else.

He's just not very good to be honest.

At the cutting edge it's about having the composure, the ability to see a pass, to know when to release. In the Prem that is split second stuff, you cannot dally on the ball in any position.

Against lesser oppo he gets more time and he's allowed to dally on it a bit more, and unsurprisingly he looks better. He's just not good enough for the Prem, a couple of good games against Champ oppo in pre-season kind of confirm that.

Not denying that he has technical ability, but his mind is just too slow.

Agreed. Was hoping him, Elyounoussi, Long and Obafemi would be off/sidelined and we'd have upgrades at AM and striker this summer. Doesn't seem so likely now.

Agreed. He's seriously lacking in the mental department more than anything else.

I may be wrong but I would think the club would know that. Jwp will be off next summer in my opinion.

I agree. Can’t see them sanctioning it this summer now. That being said, I can’t see him (JWP) not being very interested in a move to Leicester.

I don't think he'll go this year to be clear.

It would be funny if we now have a pretend JWP sale to Leicester to mask a vestergard exit 😅

He's under contract. I'd expect us to play hard ball if he's actually unsettled. No evidence yet though and he strikes me as the sort of person that would be professional.

I think vestergaard will go this summer. My prediction is vestergaard out, one maybe two strikers in and a replacement CB.

Let's look at it this way. If we hadn't taken the offer from Villa, Ings's services for the next season would have cost us over £20m. And that's on top of his wages.

I like your thinking which I suspect is not far off the mark.

I don't see why someone would buy jwp. He would cost I expect close to 50 million and for that amount you'd want virtually the complete package. Jwp is a phenomenal free kick taker and incredibly fit but he isn't that influential of the pitch. Worth remembering that he was captain during some absolutely hideous performances. You wouldn't imagine someone like Roy Keane standing for something like that.

Exactly - would be so horrendously over priced for what he is. And to be honest i think he'd also then struggle with going into a club as a £40m man or whatever.

I cannot think he would go anywhere this window - worth far too much to us compared to what any sensible club would pay.

Think captains aren't the same these days. He's a class act, hugely dependable and has a weapon that no-one else really does in the league.

Captains that go round bollocking people, don't exist anymore.

I think jwp is an intelligent footballer who realised he hasnt got any pace,is a poor tackler and non header of a ball but worked out how he could be an asset by concentrating on free kicks and  set pieces.

It’s a completely different game now though. You wouldn’t see beckham breaking through as a right midfielder or probably at all, in a top top club, in this day and age.

Yep. If there was a mad billionaire newly in charge of a smaller club (hypothetically if Newcastle had been taken over) then that's the sort of signing I'd expect them to make. Otherwise he's not good enough for a big team and too expensive for someone like Everton.

It's not about a bollocking necessarily. There's plenty of influential players on the pitch who wouldn't stand for a 9-0 performance, let alone two.

I agree. He’s captain by default really. A great professional, and one of, if not the best free kick takers around.

Other than that, he’s pretty average. Many similar CM’s (excluding free kicks) around like him for half the price.

Given the fee he’d command, I honestly wouldn’t be too bothered if he went. 40-50m (my opinion it’d be on the lower end) + 15-20 for Vestergaard and the 30 for ings would give us a real chance at rebuilding. maybe it’s a bit to late in the window now, but if we some how stay up and if he went next summer (which i think is a given regardless of what happens to us), we should have a big pot to play with.

I think people are missing how much JWP brings to our high-press. When Saints are good, the effective high-press is what everything builds from. And JWP is at the heart of it. His extreme fitness and intelligent reading of the game mean that he is a key contributor to our regaining possession. This isn't always obvious, because he's doing this in combination with other players. But we are simply a more effective side when he's on the field. Time and again he converts 40% chance of gaining (or retaining) possession into 60%.    Over the last year, he's added to that core much better, bolder, faster passing.  I really do think he's a special player, and that he deserves more appreciation here than he gets.

Maybe. But not as a right midfielder, it’d have to be a Jorginho type.

Possible yeah and that was the brilliance of Beckham when he went into the middle. He did that for AC and PSG I believe.

I think the difference is that at United they had a team of high quality players who could cover the deficiencies in Beckham's game so he could get on with doing what he was best at. We don't really have that, so a specialist player becomes much harder to use effectively.

I think not making Gareth's England team will turn his head and that he will feel playing for either Villa or Leicester will get him there, along with lots of cash. Maybe he'll stay for one last season but bracing myself for him being the next bombshell
