OttawaSaint Posted 24 January, 2020 Posted 24 January, 2020 Really happy he's found his role and is improving and excelling in it. He was always regarded as a good player but it wasn't clear where he could fit in. A "set piece specialist" not quick enough to be a winger, not strong enough for central midfield, not defensive enough for fullback. Ralph seems to have taught him how to harry, hustle and tackle and added a bit of bite to his game. His fitness (which has never been an issue) is ideal for this type of role. Too bad that due to bad planning on behalf of the club he will probably have to play out of position for a few weeks.
Avenue_Saint Posted 25 January, 2020 Posted 25 January, 2020 Has grown immensely. Wasn’t his biggest fan but I would pick him every time now Well done
igsey Posted 25 January, 2020 Posted 25 January, 2020 Fully expecting him in the next England squad. Southgate loves JWP, he's been in excellent form and England need midfielders that run a lot and cover a lot of ground, and who are his realistic competitors in CM in a 4-3-3? Henderson you'd have to assume is a shoe-in, but apart from that - Winks? Rice? Both having poor seasons. Add in the versatility he has, able to play RB or RM, and obviously the set pieces, I think he'd be perfect for England at the moment.
Lord Duckhunter Posted 26 January, 2020 Posted 26 January, 2020 Let’s not get carried away. All he’s done is cement his place in an average premier league side. He may become Saints version of Mark Noble, but we’ll need someone creative next to him if we want to progress. Him, OR & PEH are too one paced & safe for the modern game. Just as Ings has raised the bar in respect of our strikers, we really need some class in centre midfield. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

But it wasn't that long ago he was playing awfully. All most pundits do is peddle the myth of him being the great set piece specialist.

All most pundits do is peddle the myth of him being the great set piece specialist.JWP seems to be a victim of the idea that to be good at set pieces you need to be scoring from the majority of them. News flash, even the best freekick takers in history missed more than they scored, and even the best corner takers would have had less than 1% of their corners converted in their career. All most pundits do is peddle the myth of him being the great set piece specialist. It's not a myth at all. Statistically he is one of the best free kick takers in PL, in terms of goals and hitting the target, he is one of the most consistent. In the PL no one has ever scored more than 4 direct free kicks in a season, the consistent players will be getting about 2-3 a season and that is what JWP does, and he does it in a team that until recently won't have been creating as many chances for free kicks round the box as the better teams. If he played for Man City or Liverpool he'd probably be scoring about 4-5 a season as he'd get far more chances. In terms of scoring from attempts and making the keeper make the save, he is right up there with the best. Also he's not really having a purple patch, hes been playing very well for over a year pretty much since Ralph came in, the whole team wasn't great at the start of the season but he was one of the better ones IMO and has raised his game now above what he did in the 2nd half of the season last year.

Too many people getting carried away. It's good to see him become more reliable recently.
tajjuk Posted 28 January, 2020 Posted 28 January, 2020 He's basically doing for us now what Morgan did for us at his best, box to box midfielder, pressing hard, tackling and getting forward. He is also more of goal threat than Morgan was and has the set pieces, but is physically a bit smaller in stature.
Barsiem Posted 6 February, 2020 Posted 6 February, 2020 I’m sure this has been covered elsewhere but for those who don’t read the board religiously - some great news re ward-prowse’ injury just being a deep cut, and he may even be fit for Burnley. Given it looked like ligament damage that’s a huge bonus for us and him on a disappointing night

A real bonus if he`s fit for the Burnley game but I hope he isn`t `rushed back` too early.

Given it looked like ligament damage that’s a huge bonus for us and him on a disappointing night Is it normal to get a deep cut from a momentary tap from studs? Or was Sessegnon wearing blades? #EdwardScissorfeet
Nordic Saint Posted 6 February, 2020 Posted 6 February, 2020 Is it normal to get a deep cut from a momentary tap from studs? Or was Sessegnon wearing blades? #EdwardScissorfeet I was thinking the same. Apparently he was cut so deeply that you could see bone. When compared to the possible brush that Son suffered to win a penalty, you'd think that would be a red card offence.
Saint86 Posted 7 February, 2020 Posted 7 February, 2020 Just to opine. His through ball for Ings (which he subsequently powered over Lloris to hit the bar) was a thing of true beauty. The weight was perfect, beat the defence and the keeper.

The weight was perfect, beat the defence and the keeper.Actually, Lloris was terrible there - he could have come and collected that easily. By the time Ings reached it, the ball had traveled 60 yards and was in the 6 yard box with the keeper retreating. Was a lovely pass, but Lloris' ineptitude made it. And then Ings missed the sitter. Brilliant run and pass by Redmond and superb finish by Ings.

I'd hope it would win MOTD goal of the month, but not sure it's eligible scored in the Cup.
spyinthesky Posted 22 February, 2020 Posted 22 February, 2020 Like a lot of people, I was a bit unsure about JWP. I have to say he has been immense lately whether mid field or covering at RB. Recovering from a nasty injury at Spurs seems remarkable. In my view a close call between him and Danny Ings for Player of the Year.
Dusic Posted 22 February, 2020 Posted 22 February, 2020 He is an excellent player. I have knocked him a lot in the past but this year he has been excellent. I am sure there will be offers for him in the summer.
Shroppie Posted 22 February, 2020 Posted 22 February, 2020 An interesting situation is developing. I'd say that JWP is now our best RB. He's now also our best box-to-box midfielder. He can't play both positions at once, so it comes down to the best cover for him in either position. Up to now, we've been looking at Romeu for DM or Valery or KWP at RB, but after Smallbone's performance today I'd be tempted to keep JWP at RB and Smallbone to partner Hojbjerg. S-Clarke Posted 22 February, 2020 Posted 22 February, 2020 He's come on leaps and bounds over the last 18 months. A very talented English PL player now, will be attracting the attention of a lot around us. His appearances count at his age is utterly remarkable.

SuperSAINT Posted 22 February, 2020 Posted 22 February, 2020 Absolutely superb today. Did a fine job of nullifying Grealish. Decent collection of talented wide-men in his back-pocket now.
bpsaint Posted 22 February, 2020 Posted 22 February, 2020 As I said in the post match thread earlier there’s nobody else I’d want at RB other than Prowsey, he’s had both Zaha and Grealish in his pocket now.
Bermuda Saint Posted 23 February, 2020 Posted 23 February, 2020 wrote this about JWP on this forum... 06-09-2014, 10:40 PM I have seen the future, we all have, I just didn’t understand the importance of this young man. JWP is the new Mr. Saint, the one that will lead our new generation of academy products into the light of the poaching CL clubs. If he can fulfill his potential, continue his progression into the English national team then he will be the next to be tempted away. JWP must be given time to mature, he doesn’t have the luxury of honing his skills in the lower divisions like lalla, spidy, clyne. Etc…..he will have to prove himself against the world class players. Tough task, but his academy coaches, English Intl. youth managers, Mopo and Roko have seen enough to put this boy in the starting 11. I have to trust their judgment, the fans need to get behind him and support him because he could be the leader of our next golden generation. I hope Mr. Saint is happy here and doesn't want to leave, his desire to excel has pushed his talents to new heights! next on the banner?????
eurosaint Posted 23 February, 2020 Posted 23 February, 2020 I wonder what his market value is now ? I guess maybe £25m ?
Nordic Saint Posted 23 February, 2020 Posted 23 February, 2020 I wonder what his market value is now ? I guess maybe £25m ? It has to be more than that. He has developed into a great all-round player. He looked a class above Grealish yesterday and how much is Grealish worth?
SNSUN Posted 23 February, 2020 Posted 23 February, 2020 I wonder what his market value is now ? I guess maybe £25m ? I reckon Saints would ask £60 million, big clubs would probably be around the £35-£40 million mark, so around £50 million he'd go for, especially if he makes the England team this summer.
Shandy_Top_89 Posted 23 February, 2020 Posted 23 February, 2020 I wonder what his market value is now ? I guess maybe £25m ? It’ll be what we make it to be. If we sold him for anything less than £50m I think there would be a backlash, he’s gradually becoming our most important player. Getting slightly concerned that we will struggle to keep him in the summer, maybe the interest in Højbjerg will shield us for a season.
St Chalet Posted 23 February, 2020 Posted 23 February, 2020 To get that sort of fee you have to ask a)which Top 6 club is he a first choice CM? b)Do Everton or West Ham want him? It's great to see how he has progressed this last year. Outside shot at the Euros.
Heisenberg Posted 23 February, 2020 Posted 23 February, 2020 He's become a steady eddie with a bit of added versatility. Our James Milner I like him, I've always liked him. Nice guy - great player.
austsaint Posted 23 February, 2020 Posted 23 February, 2020 I don’t know what JWP does to them but Grealish was having a real strop today, just like Zaha I've watched the game twice - was Grealish having a strop? He questioned the yellow card given when Djenepo went close near half time but otherwise it looked as though he took all the attention and double teaming in his stride. He also had a fairly impressive game in a side which looked shambolic - Mings aside. I don't think Grealish was in anyones pocket today as others have claimed. The other thing I noticed watching the replay was the quality Smallbone showed in the first half - very composed and a nice range of passing. Hojbjerg very good as well along with Djenepo.
Jeremy Corbyn Posted 31 December, 2020 Posted 31 December, 2020 What a player hes become. A combination of settling on a position and getting constant game time. 1

Saint_clark Posted 31 December, 2020 Posted 31 December, 2020 Is that the longest run currently or the longest run ever? Surely there's been keepers or Giggs, Barry etc. Who have made more consecutive appearances?
Mr X Posted 31 December, 2020 Posted 31 December, 2020 I think it's inevitable that we could lose JWP too many big clubs are nowreportedly interested in him & at his age he will know it will be the last chance to step up a level (in terms of club size)
