mrfahaji Posted 10 November, 2018 Share Posted 10 November, 2018 (edited) I must say I thought today he looked like a little boy on the pitch. He hit a nice pass towards the end, but he seems to spend most of the time 5-10 yards from the ball or man - each situation could be viewed as him taking up a sensible position but eventually you actually have to do something, not just be "near" the action. And I know his clearance was partly bad luck, but really he should be doing better than panicking and smashing it into an opposition player from there. If Hoedt did that he'd be getting pelters. Nordic Saint Posted 12 November, 2018 Share Posted 12 November, 2018 Beattie and Lambert didn't tend to take the free kicks that weren't likely to be direct attempts on goal, for those they'd both be in the box looking to be on the end of them. Ward-Prowse puts in extremely dangerous crosses from free kicks, he can't get an assist for a great free kick because the rest of the team is useless at finishing. Even more useless at it than than Ward-Prowse? Over the years we have wasted so many scoring opportunities from free-kicks around the opposition penalty area because Ward-Prowse took them and kicked them a yard high and wide of the goal. On the rare occasion he does get one on target, he has such a weak shot that it's easily saved. These were from positions that a real dead-ball specialist, like Lambert or Le Tissier, regularly scored from.
Saint Garrett Posted 12 November, 2018 Share Posted 12 November, 2018 Don't think you can rate (or not rate) anyone based on a few appearances for a few minutes. When he was playing consistently under Puel, he was very decent, and certainly no worse than any other midfielder in our side. Like any player, you're only going to see proper performances with a run of games. I wouldn't be adverse to him starting most games.

Like any player, you're only going to see proper performances with a run of games. I wouldn't be adverse to him starting most games. I don't think he was ever very decent, but he was kind of discovering a role for himself. Now he's back to square one. The main problem with him is that no one really knows where to put him. Is he a right midfielder? Nope - doesn't have the pace or strength in the modern game to do that. Is he a right back/wing back? Possibly as cover, but again still doesn't have the pace to recover. Is he a central midfielder (DM) - Nope, not strong enough and doesn't cover near enough ground. Is he a number 10? - Nope, not quick enough, not agile enough and too weak. Is he a standard midfielder in a two? - Possibly, but again we come back to the original observations - lack of pace, lack of strength, struggles to cover the ground. He's a squad/cover player at absolute best who can do a job in a couple of positions in an emergancy. At 24 years old he should have nailed down where he's best, but he obviously isn't 'best' anywhere as a starting player. And when we're looking at one of our weakeast 'squads' in a number of years, that's pretty bad for him.

That awful run under Puel when we lost 6 out of 7 league games was when Ward-Prowse was playing 90 minutes regularly. The good run at the start of that season was when he wasn't starting. The more minutes he plays, the worse we seem to get. The last 5 Premier League games Ward-Prowse played an hour or more in were: Newcastle 3 Saints 0 Arsenal 3 Saints 2 Saints 2 Chelsea 3 Everton 2 Saints 1 Man City 6 Saints

Charlie Wayman Posted 12 November, 2018 Share Posted 12 November, 2018 He's never going to be any good under any manager, he isn't a natural footballer and he is physically weak and cannot read the game. He's had more chances to cement a place in the team than any other player we've produced from the Academy in recent times and he is far from being the best of his era. What's worse is that we are likely paying him a shed-load of dosh. If Gao wants to start reeling in the money then flogging off the dead wood like Ward Prowse will be a good place to start. Also high time we had a new poster boy from the Academy

I hate when people feel the need to blame fans for something quite obviously not their fault. It’s not as if JWP has had any abuse direct at him from the stands. JWP has the cushiest job in the Premier League. He keeps getting big juicy contracts despite being an exceedingly limited footballer, who has never really fit into the side and secured a position under 7 Saints managers. Sent from my SM-T580 using Tapatalk No one has ever doubted his attitude, indeed he seems a bright, well adjusted and popular lad. The issue is that at the age of 24 he has never really nailed down a first team place under approaching seven managers now, although early days with Ralph. Puel was the nearest but that was a very specific position in a very specific system Claude was deploying. I wish JWP all the best but do think a move, not just a loan, is the way forward all round. Where a trick was missed, which I said at the time but was show down by the usual suspects, was JWP having a season on loan with a promotion chasing side in the Champ to help his consistency and beef him up a bit. That stage has passed now.

DrunkenSaint Posted 23 December, 2018 Share Posted 23 December, 2018 We need space to get better players in and/or promote some of our 22 year olds so if he don't fit into the new system so be it. I personally never liked him as he really is just a deadball speciallist and in modern day football you just cant carry someone like that now. His style would of suited the 1990's-early 2000's punting early balls in the box from the wing, but nowadays you need to do alot more work and hes just not fast enough or strong enough for what midfielders need to do. He probably needs to drop down a division and get regular play time but he's certinally not premier standard.
