Can't recall starting one of these before so hoping it brings us some (good) luck...

Joelinton is suspended for Newcastle and with Lavia potentially back and AMN looking decent against Palace maybe we might win a midfield battle for once? Which won't mean anything unless we can find a striker who can finish but at least we might be able to push forward more often in the hope our strikers have an off-day and bang a few in.

Yes I can’t see us winning this one either.

Its a couple of things for me really. Can Ralph actually pick the right team rather than pick some players who might of had a good 45 minutes 3 weeks ago. Diallo & A.A spring to mind.

Also can we actually score more than one goal in a game?

I don't think it really matters who he picks, we just don't have the quality to win this game. Best hope is they have a really off day and we punch above our weight, then maybe we can get something.

I'd play Adams and Mara up front in a 4-2-2-2.

Give the kid a go from the off, and see what he's got. We can't really lower our goal threat much, so what do we have to lose. Either that, or gamble on Ballard.

If Ralph's main aim is to escape with a 0-0 draw, it'll be AA, Moi and JWP behind Adams, with AMN and Romeo in front of defence.

Unless ABK or KWP are fit the back five is unchanged, so in front of that I'd go Romeo-AMN, JWP-Stu, Adams-Mara

Don't @ me. COYR

I guess that means Longstaff starts again so he is the weak link to try and target in the midfield.

Not sure I trust JWP to go up against Guimaraes like I would have last season, but with Lavia back too maybe we can.

Would ideally like to try and match their 4:3:3 shape but not sure about right back position, so guess the team would need to be 5 at the back again to protect that side of the defence, so I'd have something along the lines of:

Baz, AMN, Lyanco, DCC, Salisu, Perraud, Lavia, JWP, Aribo, Adams, Mara in a 5-3-2

Mara gets a nod off the back of 4 goals for the B team (although scrappy goals, deserves a shot at 90 minutes for the first team and to reward him off the back of that makes sense to me). I've always thought Adams is best as part of a top 2. With Ings he worked well dropping off a bit to hold the ball up, rather than being the "poacher" finisher role too. For me Aribo's spot could be him, Ely or S Armstrong, none seem to be in form at the moment

Mike Dean on VAR for this one...

Before everyone moans, he was the VAR last season against them when he gave us a last minute penalty.

Obviously they are coming into this with a lot of confidence but hopefully that will spur us on. We know we need to up our level to get something.

Score draw my prediction.

                  Bazunu

KWP?/Lyanco.  DCC.  Salisu Perraud

                Lavia.  AMN

      Aribo.       JWP.      SA/AA

                        Adams

Im not convinced he’ll risk Lavia from the off so could be a 343 with Elyo at right wing back, JWP instead of Lavia and the same front 3.

We need to show up and play for the whole game. I don’t expect us to be attacking and dominating but at least don’t be so Jekyll and Hyde.

They've wheeled out DCC to say "45 minutes is not enough!"...so we should be expecting more than 45 mins this week!

Incredible analysis by the team. My ITK friend had shared other stuff with me:

- James Ward Prowse says "don't eat yellow snow".

- Gavin Bazunu reckons we should "look both way when attempting to cross the road".

- Adam Armstrong says, "put your socks on before you put on your football boots".

Very good solid side, they bullied us off the pitch last season.

RB is obviously a problem for us, but the options are basically, AMN, Lyanco, Elyounoussi or JWP.

Not sure I fancy any of those really, who plays left wing for them? Almiron?

Fingers crossed Lavia can sit in alongside AMN and maybe JWP RB?

AMN is a very capable RB. Easily the best choice of what we’ve got. Let’s hope Lavia is fit so we can play him there.

Bazunu; AMN, Caleta-Car, Salisu, Perraud; Lavia, JWP; S.Armstrong, Aribo; Mara, Adams.

Might as well give Mara a crack from the start as nothing else is really working.

Post world cup with hopefully everyone fit and available I'd like to see us play a 4-3-3:

Bazunu; KWP, ABK, Salisu, Perraud; Lavia, AMN, JWP; Aribo, S.Armstrong/New Signing, Adams.

My enjoyment watching this club is too low to feel optimistic about us currently.

my wife asks me every Saturday : "why do you watch this? You don't ever appear to be enjoying it."

There really has been little joy in the last 4 or 5 years.

I reckon we'll win this, just a feeling I have. Not sure where the optimism stems from, but I just fancy us.

I’ve had a similar fleeting thought this week, then took stock of the situation again.

I think there is something lodged deep in the psyche of Saints fans of a certain age. It goes back to Newcastle coming to our place with a reputation for scoring freely and playing swashbuckling football, only to be knocked back down to earth by Saints.

Trouble is this dim and distant recollection going back to the 90’s in the days of Keegan at The Dell is largely down to MLT, and another due to Watson et al.

Perhaps JWP will be the talisman on Sunday, or someone else steps up. Realistically, not expecting it though.

We haven’t got those types anymore.. it’s Been along time since we’ve seen a dogged Southampton turn in those type of performances… we were technically inept bar le tiss but made up for it in guts and determination..

lavia coming back is a big plus and will shore up the middle, but I fear for us up top .. we are toothless and if we don’t unearth a goalscoring machine in January .. I think it’s us or Leeds along with boscombe and forest !

My first ever Saints game was a 2-0 win v Newcastle in 1963. We have a good home record v Newcastle.  At one time we had a 17-match unbeaten run against them at home. The 4-2 followed by the  two consecutive 4-0 wins in 2013/2014 were fairly typical of how much we've dominated them down here. They don't travel well. So, we should win this one. Of course we don't have a goal scorer nowadays so it will probably only be 1-0. A penalty or own goal?

Eh? They travel just fine. Drew at Old Trafford, won at Spurs, the only defeat being at Anfield. Almiron gets a goal of the season contender every week and Wilson is on a good run too. They have the best defence in the league and we can't score.

3 nil Saints then 😄

But seriously...big loss I feel. No confidence in the manager at all.

Do we risk throwing Lavia in from the start or do we accept that we'll probably lose this game and just give him 30 minutes as a sub to ease him back in?

I appreciate that Newcastle are in a good vein of form, but I don't think that we need to throw in the towel so quickly. They have only won twice away all season and their away record is inferior to Chelsea, Arsenal and Man United who we matched earlier in the season. So yes, stick Lavia on from the beginning and see how the game progresses and how his fitness holds out. It will be difficult but we can definitely get something from this game.

1-0 Saints 89th minute penalty that Lyanco will fire in to the bottom corner past Pope before standing on the advertising boards beating his chest. (Aka Ruddock in the Milton)

What a moment that was! The Ruddock stomp was born.

Ended a run of 17 league games without a win!

I was right behind it on "the left side" carried on a wave of emotion from the back of the Milton to somewhere half way down after Wallace was taken down by Hooper. What a moment as you say.

With Lavia and maybe even ABK back I think we'll be very competitive. That seems to put me in a minority as a thumping Newcastle win seems inevitable according to most on here. I would point out to those people that a Newcastle win is currently around Evens on Betfair but history tells me that gets three responses - A) If Newcastle do win we hear about their bets AFTERWARDS....B) "Couldn't bet against my own team" - despite the fact that wouldn't have any bearing on the result of course....C) It is just ignored as these people don't REALLY think a Newcastle win is inevitable they just like to blow a lot of froth and hot air.

plucky defeat. But how amazing it will be to be competing with Nick Pope, Langstaff and Dan Burn

It should be easy. Howe is useless, gets teams relegated and cant spend money. Ralph will be able to deliver him a lesson in management. I'm buzzing to see how much Matt Targett has regressed since leaving Saints and Ralphs careful guidance.

Who do you leave out, Salisu or Caleta-Carr? im not sure either of them have done much wrong, but ABK has been our best defender this season.

Might as well just play him for 30 minutes - after all, the rest only play 45 minutes a game.
