Is that still the case? Seems like Zaha has really had our number in recent matches.

He has scored in 3 of the last four games agains us, including the 90th minute winner last season. They obviously have other attacking talent, even Ayew caused all sorts of problems with his pace at SMS last season, but Zaha has been difficult to stop. He's a very good player, and our issues at RB don't help. If we go three at the back, then that space behind the fullback is where he resides, so our lads better know what they are doing.

What a mess. Rishi needs to sort out an HS4 for the Southern Powerhouse of Southampton to the capital!

Only when we require it though, it needs to be closed the rest of the time, we don’t want those yobbos and hoorays travelling down here at will, no sir!

I saw someone wanted one, I’ll take the other 2 if they’re not already gone. jharris9587@gmail.com

They have some very decent attacking players, Olise, Edouard, Eze and Zaha. We will need to defend well. Zaha vs Lyanco could be an interesting one...!

Could and probably should have been sent off vs Arsenal (double punch on jesus, the headbut, and hands on the throat of martinelli to name just a few), would imagine the refs have reviewed that and will be on him from now on.

Yep, the only thing that let him down, the completely unnecessary yellow.  His passion is part of his game but he needs to stay on the pitch.

Afternoon all from a Palace exile who lives in Freemantle. Always love the banter/abuse with my Saints mates when it comes to this fixture.

Hopefully should be a good game. We were trounced by Everton at the weekend however we were missing Doucoure through suspension, who has been an absolute beast at defensive midfield.

Our attacking youngsters will be up for this one I think after Everton and our three wins this season have all been at home and after conceding first so it may be worth letting us score first...

I hope the travelling fans have a safe journey and enjoy the game, just not too much!

Should be a good game. Think we have a decent record there in recent years.

It's a strange one because I always feel more confident heading to St Mary's rather than Selhurst. The last two games I got to Selhurst for we lost 0-1 after a Speroni clanger and 1-3 on Boxing Day. Travelled incognito on a Saints coach from St Mary's with a mate, kept my head down, got back on the coach after and was sussed as I was the only one without a Santa hat 😂

What does edozie have to do to get a start ? He’s looked superb in all his cameos to me looks easily our best creative player and a real livewire..

also wouldn’t mind seeing Mara over AA to be honest.. at least he showed some really good glimpses like that through ball and the offside goal.. despite his pace AA looks another one of those that gets brainfreeze when in a decent position we seem to have a talent for finding these type of players ..the chance when running through against arsenal was embarrassing and laughable

it’s one of my biggest gripes against Ralph players with attacking spark seem to mean nothing to him

And I completely disagree with you.

For the moment, Edozie is doing fine coming off the bench.  He offers pretty much no protection to the left back, and he will need to develop that side to his game to be a regular started in the league for me.

Mara IMO, apart from one good moment vs Leeds, has looked a million miles away from a premier league striker.  Also fine him coming off the bench, but even then he never looks like scoring.

Although I do not rate Adam Armstrong, he has been involved in some of the goals, and a lot can be said for some continuity in the side. I think we are starting to look better with a settled team, Elyounoussi deserves his place, Adams is a shoe in, A Armstrong gives us a bit of pace, plus Stuey Armstrong playing a part too.

I expect to see the likes of Edozie and Mara play against Sheff Weds in the cup, and slowly become more involved as the season goes on.

Why do u think edozie offers no protection? Is it because he’s actually beating players, advancing with the ball and making things happen?? The guy is doing more in ten minutes then the starters do for the whole game :)

maybe I’m old fashioned but I want our number tens to be our creative players . The way we are going we may as well just play defenders in the 10 positions as well ..I’m serious with this too.. if we swapped moi and played lyanco in his place you probably wouldn’t lose any creativity

Even city fans were drooling over edozie cameo vs arsenal saying they should of let cole palmer or mahrez go instead pretty high praise

If edozie had played instead of Ely vs Arsenal, our MoM doesn't play - and with his absence we'd miss two superb goal saving tackles (abeit one ultimately ruled out for crossing the line after the tackle) and the opening for our equaliser. Ely deserves his place in the team no question atm - puts in a great work rate and carries a decent level of threat (at least for our attacking mids at anyrate).

When you start suggesting we play a CB as a wide attacking mid its time to put down the crazy juice - If it was that easy arsenal wouldn't be top of the league ;)

We'd all love better quality attacking mids, but we didn't get them in the summer, and consequently we've playing till at least the world cup with Ely, Stu/Adam Armstrong, and Edozie. I also forgot Walcott, he'll be getting some game time as well ;)

It’s you on the crazy juice if you think moi carries a decent level of threat.. he’s been starting most games and that one assist vs arsenal is his only key contribution.. and what about all times he’s to slow in body and mind and screws up decent opportunities or just does his usual ghost mode where you hardly notice he’s playing…

as I said when edozie comes on even for ten minutes he makes a bigger impression then moi does in 80 minutes or more most of the time..

Sure elyounoussi had a couple of key moments against arsenal but as a creative force he is still piss poor

also not really suggesting we play lyanco there.. but since Ralph only gives a shit a about off the ball anyway even with his tens. Lyanco probably gonna defend better and even has more flair then moi anyway..  I doubt it would be a big downgrade lol

There's more to a player than just their goal threat though.

Say that Edoize creates a couple of decent chances but then is also responsible for us conceding a goal because he didn't do the defensive part of the game correctly. Is it still worth picking him over someone who could have prevented that but may have created less?

Ideally we'd have someone who could do all of them but we probably don't.

I quite fancy us again after the past week.

Palace has been more a happy place for us to visit over the years.

I’d be fully in favour of the same team starting as they did for Arsenal. Quotes from Ralph today saying how Palace get worse when being pressed implies to me he might tinker and go back to 4-2-2-2.

Get an early tackle in on Zaha that is hard but not a foul should rile him up nicely. Then Ward-Prowse can return to being the shithouse he used to be, or Lyanco can take the mantle.

A close 2-1 to us in this game I reckon. They’ll be a few goals for sure.

Seems the Palace fans have a completely opposite view to Ralph. According to them they were unable to compete against Everton's low block in their last game. Their fans will probably fancy their chances if Ralph opts to press. Let's see who turns out to be right.

Yep. Mentioned on another thread, Everton sat back so their pacey attackers pretty much had no space in behind and just ran into bodies when trying to play through. Then just hit Palace on the break at pace when they got the ball back.

Hoping we are due a game of scoring more than one goal. Not happened in 7 games while Che was having his little run

This is a realistic fixture for it to happen.

in the Stephens/Bednarek time scoring 2 goals was no guarantee of getting a result but the defenders we’ve got now give us a chance.

Did you read what I put... I said he offers a decent attacking output compared to our other attacking mids... And that we need better attacking players? So you agree with me basically I would say... Except on your. Lyanco proposal. What moi does offer is a good work rate and key defensive contributions to go alongside his attacking contribution 🤷‍♂️

The reality is that I would expect him to be regularly getting game time on current form and given the players he is competing with... And we shoudn't be playing lyanco as right attacking mid over Moi!

I also think Edozie should be playing more even of its still from the bench. So far he has got just 17 minutes against Wolves (where he looked sensational), 11 v villa, 23 v Everton, 16 v West Ham, 0 v Bournemouth and 10 v Arsenal. For a side that creates pretty much fuck all, that's not enough.

The discussion above has centred around a choice between between Moi and Edozie, but as he mostly plays on the right. Aribo and Amstrong are all getting a lot of game time with little return, perhaps the merits of their selection ahead of Edozie should be discussed.

As for Edozie not providing the left back with any cover, I am not sure that's true, but if we are playing five at the back and three central midfielders, does he have to track back to help Perraud all the time? Shouldn't we have two or three players that get some license to bomb on?

Ralph picks moi cos of his against the ball work .. he’s the only attacking threat we have that is actually better at defending 😄one swallow doesn’t make a summer tho .. so give the edoize a start .. maybe go a goal up then game manage from there … bring on moi 2nd half who can then get up and down as a wing back in a more defensive shape .

I reckon we’ll see more of Edozie after the World Cup. Same with Mara. Ralph will want that time to go through the play book and pressing system so he knows he can trust them in the 4222.

Not sure we have much of a pressing system these days or, if we do, it's much less high up the pitch so causes less problems for our opponents. I miss the high press but accept it was hard to maintain although with 5 subs maybe we could cope better.

We don't seem to be winning free kicks around the opposition box so JWP is not getting the chance to score goals. I think we need the likes of Stu Armstrong, Aribo and Edozie and others getting into these areas where they might draw fouls. So far we are not really working as much in these potential danger areas and, as a result, we are being deprived of opportunities for JWP to work his magic. I hope we can redress this somehow because we need his goals from set plays.

Michael Salisbury on the whistle for this one, a brief look at his stats he seems a bit card happy with 24 in 5 games - so if our resident nutcase is playing someone needs to have a word in his ear.

To back him up on VAR - Mike Deans son - David Coote (that said might be the voice of reason in Salisburys ear with only 17 yellows in 6 games).

Hmmm. I don't actually know what this so called `play book' of ours is, but how hard can it be to take on board? If we are talking about a play book like the NFL uses, which has a vast array of plays requiring very specific positioning and movement of players, then new players to an NFL team pick them up in about two weeks. How hard can it be for our players to understand where they should be with and without the ball in the various thirds of the pitch?

It's been 9 weeks since Edozie joined. If he hasn't worked it out by now, he never will.

Do we press any more? Not noticed it. Do we even play 4222 (lets be honest, its just 4-4-2) any more either?

Not seen any stats but I'm imagining that refs letting more challenges go this season (which I really like) will have contributed to there being far fewer free kicks for everyone.

We also seem to have less of the ball in that area, and we don't generally stretch the game like Broja or even Long did last season. We play into feet, or try and counter.  No idea whether it's accurate or not, but feels like Stuart Armstrong wins quite a few free kicks, and he's not really played much either. Probably all contributing factors.

They are a decent side (especially at home)

I think though if we can keep concentrated and defend properly (or properly enough for us) I fancy us to nick it.

Their FB's are definitely exploitable and I would hope we can target them to get some joy. 1-2 to the Saints.

Agree, he's not the greatest full back but he does always put a shift in. Maybe we could identify him as a weakness and exploit that to our advantage.
