Palace 1-0 Saints - Match Thread

Couldn’t see a buildup thread so here we go. Saints unbeaten in 3 up against Palace who are 2 points ahead of us having played a game less. They’ve won their last 2 at home (Wolves and Leeds, both 2-1) but were heavily beaten at Everton last time out.

Hopefully Che has fully recovered. Imagine it’ll be fairly close to unchanged apart from that with KWP and ABK still out.

Still after a spare ticket, can meet in Southampton this week or London on the day if anyone has one.

They have some very decent attacking players, Olise, Edouard, Eze and Zaha. We will need to defend well. Zaha vs Lyanco could be an interesting one...!

Not sure whether we might go back to 4 atb, or whether we're set to go 3-5-2 with no KWP.  AMN or Elyounoussi can do a job at RWB, no doubt.

Difficult to argue against the same team really. Possibly Adam Armstrong out, but he does offer a bit of pace to the side.

Should be a good day out regardless, although very annoyingly, I'm at a wedding so not going to be there!

Looking forward to the JWPv Zaha mind games which James usually wins hands down. Hope we can continue with the aggression we saw against the Gunners. I would keep AA out on the left if only for his speed. Hope Che is fully fit and we can see him score a couple more. Lyanco has to show a little more restraint. I never predict scores but we could win this one by a comfortable margin. COYS

We came up with a new song in The Lounge, if anyone wants to give it a try:

He stands just over five foot three,

Rishi, Rishi,

He took us to 10 Downing Street,

Rishi, Rishi,

An ex-chemist, he takes the p*ss,

With health advice from Matt Le Tiss,

Rishi Sunak, Southampton’s new PM

I'm going, probably about the 4th or 5th trip there, including the Dellhurst Park one, I don't think I've ever seen us lose there and current form is on our side, so reasonably hopeful.

Me too and can’t beat a 3pm Sat KO in London. Been many times and far more wins than defeats although remember recent 3-0. 0-2 Saints on Saturday

I like the flexibility we had on Sunday, being able to easily switch between a 3, 4 or 5 at the back enabled us to gain some control on the game when really needed it.

I'd happily sing that over the Djenepo/Wonderwall chant.

Actually looking forward to this one for a change, shame there are so many engineering works going on. Chele back for A Armstrong and AMN for Aribo hopefully

Definitely, very annoying. I don't use the train that much but seemingly every time I want to there's some works or cancellations.

As for the game, I can see it being a tight one. Palace are a weird team, a lot of decent players but not doing as well as I thought they would.

Yup, it’s definitely something that Ralph has enabled us to do, we did it a few times last year, when Diallo started on the right of midfield. Great to have the option to mix it up depending on how the games going

Bazunu; AMN, DCC, Salisu, Perraud; Diallo, JWP, Elyounoussi; Aribo, S.Armstrong, Adams.

Subs: McCarthy, Lyanco, Payne, Larios, Lavia, Djenepo, Edozie,  A.Amstrong, Mara.

I'd go for AMN at right back over Lyanco. Although he may wind Zaha up it could easily go the other way and I could see Lyanco getting sent off himself.

Lavia hopefully fit enough for 30 mins or so off the bench.

Is that still the case? Seems like Zaha has really had our number in recent matches.

Really hoping the team don’t get too complacent after holding Arsenal to a draw and they go for a win here. With 2 incredibly tough games coming up after against Newcastle and Liverpool this is our best chance at getting a result that would see us going into the World Cup break with a bit of breathing space from the bottom 3.

Palace are very Jekyll and Hyde. Could turn up and smash us with their attack or struggle and they aren’t in good form right now. I’d take a point personally. Keep the unbeaten run going and the green shoots of recovery showing.

Don’t think so as that’s the route we are taking!

Never take Clapham route always Waterloo for hole in the wall and duke of wellington then on  to London Bridge ..then train to Norwood junction.. the cherry tree outside station is called something else now tho .. good away day .. remember 10.000 saints descending on selhurst park in 99 vs Wimbledon .. ‘wen he gets the ball ️ he takes the piss’ 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
great day ! Landed up in soho that night celebrating a 2-0 … Norwood junction was like walking through Southampton city centre that day.

I’m not going but have heard it’s a bit of a carve up on the trains from Clapham. We’ve done the other way in the past, Southern from Central, up through Sussex and get off for a drink around Croydon. Then onto the game from that side, worked out well for us before.

Edit: train tickets have been cheaper that route too

Looks like trains are a nightmare heading from Clapham way to Thornton Heath/Selhurst this Saturday.

Southampton Central closed all weekend as well again with buses to Eastleigh

Hoping we stick with the 3-5-2 / 5-3-2. With the depth we now have at CB and with full backs who like to bomb forward, it just makes sense and will work well away from home in particular. Bit of a void at RB and bearing in mind Palace will try to exploit that with Zaha, I would pick AMN. Assuming that ABK and Lavia remain sidelined (Lavia must have a chance though), I would go with -

                       Bazunu

        Lyanco     Salisu     DCC

AMN                                      Perraud

           Moi      JWP   S Armstrong

                        Aribo

                       Adams

Looking like 1-1 draw or if Palace step up in relation to the quality in their squad, perhaps a 2-1 loss. Need JWP and whoever partners him to improve significantly or Saha will dominate and cause our defence issues. Personally I’d like to see Lyanco given a sweeper type role man-marking Saha out of the game just for the entertainment factor when they clash.🤣

If you are looking to go by train investigate the coastal route up to Victoria. I came along it last Sunday and the service terminated at Woolston which was a handy walk across the bridge, and no point getting the replacement bus to central, obviously. It might be a better bet than the Waterloo route.

What a mess. Rishi needs to sort out an HS4 for the Southern Powerhouse of Southampton to the capital!

Need to get his mate Kuti to have a word with him.

I reckon if Rishi goes to games he'd be more of a official travel club man with his flask and sandwiches rather than an all day session away day on the train so he's probably not bothered about the railworks

Pretty sure there's bus replacement on that service until Havant this weekend.

Imagine saying that at halftime in the Leeds game!

I think with the injuries we have though 3/5 at the back is the way forward.

Would love to see Lavia have some involvement towards the end, though suspect it may be too soon.

I just recalled the last one I went to Toby scored a lovely goal, what a great player he was for that brief time. I am also looking forward to a Saturday London game, first one in years.
