Results wise sturrock wasn’t a disaster but it Kind of emphasises the point others have made about having the respect of the dressing room. He didn’t have it, he was considered a bit of a joke  figure mainly because he was scruffy and overweight. So to those who say why wouldn’t Jones have the respect of the dressing room, it’s not guaranteed Sturrock didn’t and he had a good playing career.

There were rumours he had a drink problem, feel asleep in the changing room etc, so potentially more then just bring scruffy and overweight

Have we discussed his staff?

A quick look, all of the staff look like former Luton players (and therefore likely to stay) except his assistant Chris Cohen. So I imagine he'll come as well. Not a bad thing as we already have Selles and Carl Martin, in addition to goalie and fitness coaches.

Any players at Luton or Stoke that Jones worked with previously that could do a job for us?

I would so no quality wise..they do have a terrier like centre midfielder Allan Campbell who has looked very impressive under Jones and I would take him starting over Diallo..24 years old and recently called up to the Scotland squad

From a Luton Town mate:

he has big attention & man management detail. Barcelona coaching background, so knows his coaching. massively passionate. welsh & very religious. players love him. good for young players which i un derstand Saints have. does tend to tinker. hates losing. championship manager of season last year above forest guy. deep thinker. great organiser of club players across age groups. looks for consistency. can understand why saints too brass interested. Stoke is a red herring. Wasnt given support or money. if i was saints id be saying yes please.

Who would have thought a couple of days ago that anyone in Southampton would be watching Stoke v Luton on a wet dreary Tuesday night?

Everyone will be watching in case there’s the highly unlikely repeat of the infamous Gakpo ‘final’ game.

Nathan Jones will probably make a remarkable hat trick of substitutions resulting in a 10-0 win.

He’ll then declare his undying love for Luton and sign a new 20-year contract!

Our last saving grace is Luton getting pumped tonight and the board having a u-turn. It’s like walking out of Primark without buying anything, whilst trying to avoid any eye contact with the security guard as you walk through the exit nervously. We are Southampton, the pinnacle of the south coast. We are in the so called best league in the world with a £250m plus value. We should have that arrogance about us being from the south. We should be doing everything possible to maintain our premier league status. We should be recruiting a manager who has something about them, the look, the talk, the charismas, the arrogance, not some 5.7 stone island wearing sheep who has managed a couple of tin pot clubs. Up the Saints.

This is really weird. I have an old Nokia 3210 with a text on it from a Plymouth supporting mate who said the exact same thing about Sturrock in 2004.

Really? First time I’ve heard that one and I had quite a few connections at the club at the time. Either way I know the players used to openly take the piss out of him and he had zero respect.

James Bree is a pretty good attacking wingback (relative to the Championship). That’s honestly about it and speaks volumes to the sort of squads he has worked with in Luton

Being a fellow Welshy I want to give him a chance and be pleasantly surprised, but I also admit to being somewhat concerned about what he will bring to the club from Luton and how he will influence the players. Can't see Che magically finding his scoring boots now Ralph has gone (prove me wrong Che!)

Interesting that Shawcross suggests Jones wanted to use the diamond midfield formation, that had worked so well at Luton, but Stoke didn't have the fullbacks or midfielders to make it work. I wonder if he is still using that formation at Luton and whether he'd try to use it here. If he does, do we have the players to make it work?

We certainly need a change. Is that the way to go?

He has apparently admitted he tried to change things too quickly at Stoke and should have focused on getting results to begin with

He signed 10 players during his one summer at Stoke.

You’ve spent all season telling us Ralph didn’t  sign the players, now you’re saying Jones did at Stoke. Based on what, your knowledge of Stoke City’s transfer policy 😂. Consistent as ever.

If we try to turn into a really direct, win the 2nd balls, defend deep type team we will definitely go down as our recruitment has not been tailored to that style.

half this forum moans about us not getting it forward quickly. They want us to play more (lower percentage) forward passes and less `safe' square and backwards stuff that keeps possession but doesn't get the ball into dangerous areas. I can't imagine he will have us playing long and winning second balls as our main tactic, but perhaps there is middle ground. We used to play a short possession game under Adkins/Poch, but then a long diagonal to Lambert would be very effective change of play.

I don't think our players are good enough to beat a press. Having a direct method that bypasses midfield could be handy.

based on what I have seen of us over the last two years, we need him to change the formation and tactic immediately. What we have been doing just doesn't work.

Someone on the ugly inside forum still thinks Gallardo is our top choice.

Driving home from the game Sunday I heard Blackmore address this. Says he chucked the name out there a couple of weeks ago as a personal choice, and some mugs on Twitter have run with it. Went out of his way to say it was just his opinion based on absolutely nothing.

The guy said he didn’t have money to spend, regardless of what their set up was that doesn’t seem to be the case. That was my point you thick gammon twat.

A Stoke fans view from their forum:

His disastrous tactics and his disastrous signings was the reason it went so disastrously wrong when he was here.

He was backed and financed to the hilt by the board

Would work wouldn’t it:

Bazunu

KWP-ABK-Salisu-Perraud

Lavia

JWP S.Armstrong

Aribo

Adams A.Armstrong

Basically what we have already but pushes the Armstrong up top alongside Adams, brings Aribo more central and Lavia sits deeper

actually looks like a hybrid of what we’ve played at times this season, and some of the better performances we’ve had from the current squad

Remember how much grief Puel used to get for this diamond formation….
