Premier League & cost of living: How many clubs pay real living wage?

Interesting article from the BBC, only 12 Premier League clubs are either accredited Living Wage Foundation employers or pay the real living wage to all staff, including subcontractors.

With our recent takeover, I would have thought Saints would be included in the 12, but we aren't...interested to hear thoughts from others on this?

Pretty disgusting, when you consider the amounts of money thrown at footballers per week - and the relatively small annual figures required to get all employees up to a Living Wage.

It's not called the Living Wage without reason. And if employers aren't looking after their staff it's likely the taxpayer that's having to subsidise earnings.

We talk a good game about being a community-focused club. Time to show it.

"But Manchester United, Southampton and Arsenal do not currently pay that rate to all their caterers, cleaners and stewards".

No excuses at all. Even if these jobs are only part-time it is no excuse for the Club to exploit people perhaps because they might be fans also and excited to have a job associated with the Club. Stop exploiting the weak and powerless SFC!!!

Come on SFC, let's have a Club Statement this afternoon saying you will stop this illegal process.

I have e-mailed the Club demanding a swift and equitable resolution of this situation. Please follow suit

Bit shit really when you think of the minuscule amount it is in relation to player wages.

Always the way though isn’t it. Whenever a club gets relegated they always sack off the £25k a year admin staff before any players carry the can.

Very true and I wouldn't mind betting that if we delved deeper these poor sods are probably on zero hour contracts as well.

Still Semmens is OK with his 5% tax cut. Perhaps he might like to use the money to level things up a bit.

Peter Crouch spoke about this on his podcast, can't remember the exact one. He said he didn't really grasp it with us, but when he was relegated later in his career, he was such a key part at Stoke he was very aware of the impact. Said he found it really difficult knowing his performance on a pitch might lead to people losing their jobs, and the general revenue of the area (for example outside caterers, pubs etc).

Back to Saints, no reason why we shouldn't be able to pay the living wage, it really is a drop in the ocean to a club of our size.

No excuses for Saints on this. But rumour has it that the club made a whole bunch of people redundant at the beginning of lockdown to save costs, and in public, said they weren’t furloughing anyone and looked good because of that piece of PR spin.

Time to get on the right track Saints and make that halo sit properly.

Agree totally with you, but you need to note that not paying the Living Wage is not illegal (sorry about the double negatives). The Living Wage is voluntary, but is a decent benchmark for good employers which Saints should definitely be. There is no reason they should not pay substantially more than the LW.

If they are not paying the Minimum Wage that is a different matter and would be an illegal operation. Sadly in today's economic environment more and more businesses are flouting the Law but our Govt doesn't care.
