No chance he's going to the World Cup then. I'm trying to work out how Henderson has nipped ahead of him after he wasn't in the initial squad selection?

Southgate is your answer. Clueless hopefully he gets loudly booed tonight

A lot of screaming about TAA not being included, but I think most normal fans can understand why.

The one which has always bemused me is fikayo tomori - class CB, been an absolute super star out in Milan and is a mainstain in that side. Athetlic, quick, powerful. Why does Maguire, who doesn't play, get in ahead of him?

Maguire was good for England 18 months ago, so.........

It is shite like that which will get Southgate in the mire

Henderson was left out initially because he wasn't fit.

Prowse has no-one to blame but himself if he misses out - he's been shite all season without Romeu to carry him.

Since when does playing shit for your club make a difference when playing for England.

Tomori has been a bit meh at Milan this season actually, as has JWP and the others left out of tonights squad. Can see a theme in the ones who have been left out "not in exceptional form and not ones that have been relied on in the past". That said, they've both been better than Maguire and Henderson of course.

From Ward-Prowse and our point of view it's a bit of an odd one. He's clearly not better than Rice and Bellingham but probably the next best back up so it's weird he's been left out completely but then again I'm not sure he's done enough when he has played England to grab the role from the ones Southgate trusts from before. Hopefully it fires him up to improve for us and start taking control of games a bit more, because some exceptional performances for us I think would still open up a place for him come November.

Certainly not a fan of Alexander Arnold but seriously, why the hell is Walker always hyped up by the pundits. He is a total liability and way too arrogant, purely relies on his pace to get him out of trouble because of his poor positioning and complacency. Any proper defender is spot on with his positional play in the first place.  The Italy goal summed him up, there are numerous previous occasions when he’s switched off defensively, both for England and his club.

I said to a couple of Spurs fans when he was there that “England would never win a thing while Kyle Walker had an England shirt on, he will always let you down when it comes to the latter stages of a tournament when we actually play a half decent team”.

Personally, don’t think much of Reece James either, he’s a petulant twat when he plays for Chelsea and most of the time he turns inside and goes backwards or sideways (sounds like a certain midfielder in our team). This is despite James supposedly being this amazing crosser of the ball if you listen to the media.  None of our right backs are great defensively to be honest.

I also think it’s a joke that James Maddison isn’t in the squad either. Not sure why people on here seem to dislike him, I would take him all day long at Saints over JWP, just think he is pure class and very talented. He speaks well in interviews (understands the game) and to me he comes across as someone who has self belief rather than arrogance and is also self critical too so he’s honest! He has been Leicester’s best player by a mile this season - he and Bellingham should be regular starters in my view.

JWP is the leading English (defensive) midfielder in the league this season (statistically). Streets ahead of rice form wise. Bellingham should be the only given starter on current form, but jwp should be in the 3 for those 2 spots. Not to mention he'll run every minute of every game in the world Cup, carries a set peice threat that totally changes a game tactically, takes pens, and has the versatility to play in a number of positions.

Feel sorry for him, any half decent manager takes him and gives him a chance. He gets the worst England manager I've lived through who will likely take Henderson and Philips no doubt.

I agree with most of your  points (even if "statistically the best English midfielder" is incredibly vague) but A) Southgate can't just pick a team of on form everytime, so yes there will be occasions player who are out of form are favoured when they've been reliable in the past, that's just common sense and then B) Ward-Prowse has been given chances and whilst never played awfully, he's also never really stood out enough and demanded a place in the team. You only need to speak to fans outside of Southampton fans and not many would have him in the team, or even the 3 (for 2 spots) that we agree he should be in.

Also unless you're 6 he's not the worst England manager you've lived through. By the very same "statistically" definition you used, he'll be one of the best you've lived through whatever your age.

Spend money on a striker in January, keep same manager and still he'll still get us relegated.

No can’t see it as that’s throwing money away!

Southgate should have taken the opportunity to quit at the top - let's face it he was never going to do better than a final. If he'd have walked his reputation would have been set, all 1996 penalty demons gone. A semi and a final really is unlikely to be beaten by any England manager for a long time.

But he has stayed and he's shat the bed.

I said it before but England will be home on the plane before the first doors are opened on the advent calendar.

Names from a hat? Anyway he'd be in my starting line up for Iran with Kane and Foden up front. Sterling does well in tournaments but whenever I watch him he's so frustrating I scream at the TV and it gets tiring.

FWIW my Iran XI is: Pickford, Walker, Stones, Dier, Shaw, Rice, Bellingham, Mount, Saka, Kane, Foden. 4-3-3.

You appear to have missed the first name on the team sheet: Mr Harry Maguire

He's on the bench.

Quite possibly, Uwe Rösler, if you count East Germany.  Seem to remember he was prolific for us.

Prolific in friendlies, 2 in the game v Espayol first game at St Marys and 1 against Brighton in the last game at the Dell.  Shite in any competitive game.

Well remembered, I was actually at that Espanyol game so his friendly brace must have faded from memory.  Ralph would have coached that out of him in pre-season.

Me too, i was at both. 4-0 down at half time in the Espanyol game imagine if this forum had been around in it current state in those days. 😂
