So no surprise in JWP getting the call up?

But no KWP ahead of Shaw, Chilwell, & to some degree Trent-Alexander ??

& Philips / Maguire in squad as well - Southgate sticking to his mantra of 'i will pick players in form' again!!

God we have some shit players...

Trent cant defend, Chillwell is nowhere atm, Dier, Maguire, Mount, Abraham...

Not sure how KWP hasn't got in that squad, but won't be long til he wants to move on, if he can't get in that squad.

I see it's Ivan Toney's turn for the token "best pick him now because he's actually half decent but plays for a small club" selection.

Luke Shaw doesn't play at the moment so why pick him? 4 right backs and none of them are Walker Peters.

12 defenders, haha.

Kalvin Phillips is injured isn't he? Mount is crap. Very weak in midfield.

He's pretty much a shoe-in these days, which is great. Also, when he first started to be included in the squad a couple of years ago there were plenty of "Why Ward-Prowse FFS?!" posts on the official England social media pages but just had a quick skim read through the comments today and not a single one on JWP.

Disappointed at how far down the pecking order KWP is though.

The call up for Philips is concerning. Should be nowhere near that squad - played about 10min this season for city and suffered horrendously from injuries this past year. Suggestion there is that Southgate still sees him as the preferred player out of him and JWP.

Pleased for Prowsey :) how is KWP not in that squad! Utterly ridiculous. There's certain players included who haven't even been playing regularly - Shaw being one.

Shaw gets outpaced by a beetle these days

Grealish has been pump for well over a year - can't recall a single good game for club/country. Maguire and Shaw are broken, TAA has been terrible for a while and Mount is just Meh.

Oh well.

Southgate's dream 11

Pickford

Walker - Stones - Maguire

TAA - Rice - Phillips - Shaw

Mount - Kane - Sterling

Keep it solid lads....

Pleased JWP is in the squad especially as it shows you can get into the squad whilst playing for us! KWP is our best player though so I can't understand why he isn't getting the call up.

KWP is excellent, but does anyone really expect him to be picked ahead of James, TAA, Walker or Trippier considering the level of some of those players and the experience of others.

His best shout would be at LB but he hasn't played there this season.

He is unlucky that his position is also where England have the most high calibre options.

But realistically, it would be a huge suprise if Southgate picked him ahead of any of those mentioned.

If anything, Southgate needs to show some courage and decide which one RB to select alongside Reece James - having 4 is nonsense - he is too scared of the backlash of leaving some out.

Some of those players shouldn’t be in that squad and are only there based on who they play for.
TAA, Shaw, Maguire, Phillips.

There’s a couple like Phillips and Maguire that I’m reluctant to admit have proven to be decent for England.

Why do we need seventy defenders? Why do we need so many RB’s?

But Southgate is resorting to the big team bias now. He will not be around as England manager come Christmas time.

I’d be interested to see how many minutes of football these players have played this season in comparison to others. Even Sancho and Rashford based on recent form should be in ahead of the likes of Grealish.

All of the FB/WBs picked have much more experience playing in a back 3/5 than KWP as well which people seem to be overlooking.

I don’t really have a problem with him picking Maguire as he has consistently been good for England, and our selection of CB’s isn’t great.

Trent, however, has been shit for England, is playing shit for his club and Southgate has clearly shown previously he’s not a fan yet all of a sudden he’s a guarantee in squads. Can’t help but feel the constant talk of his omission in the public eye, mostly by Klopp, has had an impact.

Enjoying Leicester fans moaning about Maddison missing out again. It's almost like a) he's a dick and b) has been awful this season.

4 right backs in the squad again. Okay Trippier can play left back and Walker can play centre back but is it really nescasary? Especially with 2 left backs 6 centre backs and  only 5 midfielders.

Just heard that TAA could play the 'Thiago' role for England - he is THAT good.

The bandwagon thing is starting.......

Congratulations to JWP for being included in the England squad.

But baffled by KPW's exclusion ! Just looking at the full/backs/ defenders who have been chosen in front of him and to me, it is inexplicable why he isnt in front of at least a couple of them.

In my opinion, KWP is a better player than Alexander Arnold, Chillwell,Shaw and Trippier. In my mind, only Walker would seem a more effective player than him.

Bitter pill to take for him isn't it when we all see the performances he puts in for Saints....either on the right or left....for most games.

You get suspicious that not playing for one of the " big six " has worked against him. Very disappointing.

World Cup is very close, so probably not the time to bring in too many untried players to 'trial'. Tournament squads (especially overseas ones) are always based on character as much as ability, and who is good to have in the ranks for morale, leadership, etc. So based on that I can understand why some of the more senior (and known) players have been selected. The team building and togetherness needs to start now, so I guess the WC squad wont be hugely different to this (but obviously trimmed down).
The one that baffles me the most is TAA, because if you ignore the media 'Liverpool love-in' and actually watch him play, he is so bad (at defending).

Harsh, it’s only defending he’s shite at ! 😂

Really exposed at present with VVD off form.

Looks like we're in for another Southgate obsession with the Rice/Phillips "partnership", one that's never really worked even when the 2 players were in form. Just hope JWP gets a game or 2, be nice to see Toney given a chance as well.

Well, we did get the furthest we've got in a tournament since 1996 when reaching the Final of Euro 2020, with Rice/Phillips partnered in midfield, and Phillips was voted England Men's Player of the Year for 20/21, so you could argue that it DOES work.

To be fair, if he's going to play Maguire at CB, we'll need to protect him with about 6 defensive midfielders.

He’s been shit at defending since he broke through. Gets away with a lot. When the rest of them are off the boil though, he gets totally revealed for the fraud he is.

KWP instead but I’d honestly rather even the likes of Wan Bissaka etc over TAA. Total dump. Tripps is the best all round  right back for England and has been for years now.

I see no Henderson, which is good, but will probably mean he’ll be back for the WC, which will be a waste of squad space. Likewise Rashford… he’ll get recalled for WC, another waste of a space… and people like Maddison will miss out.

On form, no surprise Grealish not there but I hope he will be. An out of form JG is still a game changer, unlike dross like Henderson etc.

Don’t mind Maguire being in there. Like someone said above, he’s a different player for England. Toney, pointless.

100% JWP will miss the final cut.

To be honest, I think we will have an underwhelming WC. Southgate is pretty much a busted flush now.

Totally predictable. Players still not being picked on form rather than club stature and previous. He need a kick up the backside for the selection of all those out of form players.

JWP was awful against Villa, but that's a rarity.....not sure he deserves a place at the momentgiven his form lately, although that argument is then swifly thrown out the window by Henderson being included.

I feel massivley underwhelmed by this WC already.

Posted (edited)

No chance he's going to the World Cup then. I'm trying to work out how Henderson has nipped ahead of him after he wasn't in the initial squad selection?
