Kick Off Times

With the cost of electricity hitting businesses harder than domestic users (and that it saying something), I wonder if winter games will get to be kicked off at say 1300hrs to save on the cost of floodlights etc.
This happened during the three day week back in the 1970's and was also the case prior to the introduction of floodlights in the 1950's.
I guess most fans have become used to the changes in KO times due to TV scheduling.

Had the same thought (I remember that from the 70s) but agree wouldn't be an issue for the PL (even Championship) but could certainly be a consideration for lower/non leagues. With far more midweek/evening games this season due to the World Cup break it will still certainly knock the ol' leccy bill northwards!

Hazy recollection that kick offs were moved to 2.15pm during the power cutss/electricity crisis of the 1970's. Including midweek matches, although can't see that happening (just yet) this time round.

Premiership times probably won't move due to tv/screening rights overseas, but lower divisions could be more flexible.

They miss out?

But people can miss out on Saturday 3pm? Shift work is growing and more people are having to work Saturdays. Spreading games throughout the weekend is a very fair way of allowing as many people as possible to get to games or watch games.

The only logical reasoning for making everything Saturday 3:00pm is "because it always has been" which is a terrible logic for not changing things.

Horseshit.  Spreading games across the weekend serves one purpose only and that is to increase TV viewers and make SKY / BT more money.

Rubbish. The stadiums aren't getting any bigger, are they?

What does that have to do with anything?

Spreading games across the weekend is a fair way of doing it. There's no point in sticking to something just because it's the way it's always been. Every game being Saturday 3pm was abandoned decades ago and with good reason. More people can get to games and people can watch more games on TV.

It won't be 'more people' it will only be different people. The way it was before was much better and simpler. Everybody knew where they stood. Spreading games across the weekend is for the benefit of the TV companies, nothing more.

By your arguments there should never evr be sales of season tickets because that means that the same people always go to the games and you don't think that's fair. Well I've got a lesson for you.

Life's not fair.

Except that would be fair because you're paying for it in advance. You're also paying for it knowing that games could be moved, like you said life isn't fair.

It seems like you're rejecting a "because I said so" argument and then applying your own. Yes, you're right different people would go. If a fan works every Saturday, they can barely ever get to games if it's always on Saturday. If it's spread out, they can get to more. Why is that so hard to understand? The only reason I could imagine anyone having a problem with this is if Saturday 3:00pm was literally the only free time you had all week for 52 weeks of the year and that would put you in a very small minority.

I'll leave it there. Wishing you a pleasant weekend.

Oh yeah, I'd forgotten that the reason for moving games to Friday, Sunday or Monday is to enable more people who may be working on a Saturday to attend, rather than to make more money for Rupert Murdoch and Muhammed bin Salman among others. Cheers.

Why do you care who makes money out of it? They aren't going to give you any.

This is where the F.A should come to the aid of the clubs that need financial support right?

FFS Newcastle at home also moved to 2pm Sunday. That’s three home games in a row now. No point buying tickets in advance - piss take.

The Newcastle game is 2 months away. That weekends fixtures were always going to be moved, ditto every match week thereafter.

The bottom line is no TV money, no premier league. Games will always be shifted for TV.

Presumably like last season this game will be moved to whenever Smug Eddie wants it played.

I've just seen the latest change. Flaming 'eck. I play football on a Sunday, and although I'm pretty crap am covering in goal at the moment as we've lost our keeper. What's the point of a season ticket? I appreciate some games may be changed for the convenience of TV but three in a row all on a Sunday?! There's sod all thought for the fans who fill the grounds and no chance of getting any money back like you will be able to if you have a one-off ticket for Brentford and can't make the new date.

I really wouldn't mind if there was less money in the Premier League. It would still be England's best teams trying to beat each other. I enjoyed that when I first went to the Dell in the 70s. Quite apart from kickoff times, TV money is bit of a curse.
