I usually agree with you but feel like you’re arguing over principle now

Orsic ticked a lot of boxes, we apparantly had personal terms agreed… Id of paid the asking price

We can’t afford to haggle

Unless one of the parties involved is a complete mug (and I know many on here would like to believe that about our lot) you are always going to haggle whether you ‘can afford to’ or not. If you’re selling a player and you ask for their actual market value, you’re doing something wrong. Whatever we offer, they would always ask for more because you never go straight in with your highest bid. Much like these stories about Leeds twenty years ago, if we’d gone in with an offer of £20m, they would have said, "well Southampton clearly feel he’s worth about £25m, so let’s haggle for that." Even if they only expected £8m.

I don’t know anything about Orsic as a player but IF this is another Mara, Juanmi, Mayuka or Aribo style punt, it’d be ludicrous to be chucking £12m at a player worth £6-8m. One thing I will say with absolute certainty; if we could have signed a player on 1st January, for £8m who would have been a class above anyone we’ve got and the answer to our prayers we’d have done it.

what? We've offered €5m, they want €7m, about £6.1m where did you get £12m from? What is ludicrous is how much do you think we should pay for an proven exerperienced international player from a team that reached the world cup semi final? Less than an 18 year old left back who is at best 3rd choice and until this season had never started a first team game perhaps?

There's no way people on here are still defending Puel right? Fucking hell. 😅

Yeah that 8th, cup final and competitive win over Inter Milan was truly the darkest time in the club's history. The stuff of nightmares.

Sounds like with Orsic if we want to sign him then we will. Worth considering that there are probably multiple players of the same position being negotiated for at any one time which potentially impacts the timeframes whilst they assess which deal to actually do and how that then has a knock on for which targets in other positions become affordable/unaffordable because of it.

Also its too simplistic to just look at a fee and decide if its a good or bad offer. Usually the devil is in the detail around the terms, add ons and number of payment installments.

There also must be a reason why no PL sides have moved for Orsic til now, aside from the failed West Brom and Burnley moves...I guess from a league perspective its a big step up for a 30 year old thats been used to playing in a winning team.

If you can regularly smash the ball in the top corner from  outside the box it doesn't matter what league you're playing in because you'll find those pockets of space and no keeper in the world saves many of those. Still, we've got a whole host of goalscorers just queuing up to get on the pitch, fortunately we're spoilt for choice in that department 🙂

When is Jones next press conference? I can’t wait for the “we’re working on a few deals but January is a tough market”

In reality, he'll be as in the dark as anyone. The days of managers having any involvement in transfers other than maybe 'suggestions' are long gone.

I quite liked him too. His post-match interviews, not so much.

We paid that money for Larios for fuck sake

The owners and club are a complete joke. Bunch of frauds. He'll probably go to one of our close rivals for not much money and score a bunch of goals including against us. If Everton do get him we could be his first opponents at Goodison - we all know the script for that.

Stop clowning yourself. Puel had VVD, Tadic, Gabbiadini, Hojbjerg, Davis, Romeu and others. That squad has no relation to the squad we have now.

Puel wasn’t a disaster but he wasn’t great either. We scored one goal in his final 6 games and won once in the last 8 games of the season. Nobody was sad to see him go except Pampelmousse who claimed him to be a world class manager

The fact that Claude Puel was sacked in 2017 doesn’t mean us fans deserve relegation in 2023.

Haggling over 2 million just get it done...... What is up with these muppets in charge

First week of window we should of already had two in by now.....

As I have said before it's like they want us to be relegated.

Wankerson and Summons bunch of clowns

Same old story trying to be too shrewd and clever but ultimately ending up with the square root of f all and our opposition strengthening.

And I've been proven correct on that statement. In the second half of the season, after VVD got injured, the central defence was Yoshida and Jack Stephens. 8th was a miracle quite frankly. As shown in the subsequent seasons.

Larios has looked ok hasn't he?

Yeah, not entirley sure why Larios gets pelters as an example of a poor transfer. We haven't really seen him, he does look very small in sature but we've not seen enough of him yet.

Well so would I but if memory serves correctly, that was an abomination last time and enough for the manager to be sacked because the football was boring or something.

Funny how Leicester fans had the same view as most of us though.

Exactly that. He did alright...Nothing more, nothing less. But our fans treated him like he'd killed a child!

The way our fans have treated various managers and players over the last 6-7 years is appalling. Remember the thread on here that called for a group of fans to camp outside Forster's house and "make his life hell" if he dared see out and thus honour the contract he'd signed? Probably the same ones that were whinging about his lack of loyalty when he left.

Not to mention the personal attacks on Kartina's appearance for absolutely no reason.

He didn't get them to a cup final and finish 8th with them though did he? Puel did a 6/10 job. As a poster above pointed out, he didn't do amazingly well but he also didn't do appallingly either.

He's not a poor transfer, it's more the fact that we seemed happy to pay £7m for a third choice left back who had never played a first team match, yet are haggling over a lower fee for a proven international for a top nation. It's weird.

Without wanting to have this thread stray into completely pointless territory, what are you on about?

He inherited our best ever Premier League finish, had us 17 points worse off and playing absolutely god-awful football after 5-6 years of our best. He's also been protested out of the two clubs who took him on after us.

The terrible decision making we've gone through in the past few years has absolutely no reflection on the fact that it was correct to sack Puel. Suggesting our fans "deserve" this because we're impatient and unreasonable is laughable, given our current predicament.

Oh did he? My bad...In that case why didn't he play Mane? Or Wanyama? Or Pelle?

My point was simply that nothing is ever good enough. Obviously this current situation actually ISN'T good enough but I've seen nothing to suggest our bratty fanbase don't deserve what's happening or at very least that there are three fanbases who deserve it more.

I think Orsic has got much better in the last 24 hours.

Undeniably a decent performer for Croatia, but he’s spent the majority of his club career playing in the far east and has never played in a top league

I'd suggest you look at his skills videos which will give you an idea of the type of spectacular goals he scores.

I don’t necessarily disagree with the overall sentiment and I understand how transfers work but we’re discussing this particular one and Id say.. if the reports are true, terms are agreed with the player but we’re arguing over 1-2m euros for a player that has the ability to make a difference is bonkers

Especially if it ends up in him choosing a rival team instead

Sorry everyone, I think I've misposted a few things. I don't really believe that ANY set of fans deserve relegation. I just get a bit flustered sometimes when I can't put into words what I want to say. Totally my bad.

As mentioned on here (at every single opportunity because it's my darn card to play!) I'm autistic and I get a bit like this. Stepping away from the forum until tonight, before I make an even bigger tool of myself. By this point, I'd imagine nobody on here could be made to look a bigger tool than the players after the defeat we'd have just got ;)

Anyway, no offence meant to anyone!

Didn't make a tool of yourself whatsoever, don't be silly.

We're all rightly passionate and nervous at the moment. Should all be averaging 2/3 arguments a day.
