Younger too! You know what that means……

Sam-dab-edoize is surely the echo headline for this one

You may have to be of a certain age to get that

With the Spanish lad playing at left back I wonder where that leaves Thierry Small who was touted as being our future No 3?

Notice he was only named as sub for Port Vale when they played some nondescript team last Saturday.

Don't see why anything changes for Small. Season long loans are long and should always be judged on how they end and not how they start. Young lad settling in a new environment, league and area. Same with Kegs Chauke at Exeter, it'll take time to win trust and get opportunities. He's just got to do his thing and develop. He's ahead of this Spanish lad by all accounts in his development anyway based on the number of appearances he's made in the 23's etc.

meine Stürmer-Qual by Ralph Hassenhuttl.

A classic novel of chronological failure by Southampton fc to sign a striker in the summer 2022 transfer window. You won’t want to miss this one!

what I don't understand is why we keep buying youth players, well at the same time the club preach about our world class academy! Its a fact we have a very good and proven system in place, so whats the point of buying youngsters like this!! I think both have potential, especially Edozie with his nifty footwork. Can't really comment on Larios as he has barely played. I just cannot get over the fact that we've spunked good money on them. it totally undermines the culture of this club.

Because SR, in their wisdom, don't think there's much talent in our academy.

Real slap in the face and probably why a lot of the academy staff are leaving. And why a lot 0of the players want out.

Actually forgot all about Larios. Although seeing his name has now brought back memories of how painfully exploited he was against Everton.

The poor sod looked like an U16 player.

Just a weird signing. At the time we had Perrard and then Small and that young Spanish lad as young left backs and also brought that 17 year old in from Spurs. I know the Spanish lad has gone now but to pay £7m I think for an 18 year old left back to make it 4 left backs all 17 or 18 was really weird

If either of them turn out like Bazanu or Lavia we have bought very, very well again.  Exciting times to be a Saints fan......first time since Lawrie Mac we are pushing the boat out.  No excuses this season.

Whisper it but it’s because the academy isn’t as good as it used to be.

I hope Juan Larios gets to play against that Luton team next season.

I'd have popcorn at the ready for that.

I'm calling it now - he never plays another PL game.

I think Luton will be a league above Southampton next season….

Our whole transfer business with Man City and Shields was dodgy as fuck.

I am still unsure why Shields would leave City for Saints.
Why didn’t City try that hard to keep him? With there money etc and catchment would be far easier than us.

Same for Wilcox really

Looking forward to seeing all the talent in the academy that were so atrociously treated by SR, rip it up in the Premier League in the years to come.

Because they were working at youth level and were offered a very senior role at a PL men’s club. It’s a no brainier really, huge promotion for them both.

lost credibility since we refused to play reed and sold targett for admittedly good money but both would get in a mid table prem team now.

I think that is more to do with how far we have regressed. Neither we’re good enough to nail down a starting position for us and rightly we’re moved on for their own development.

Players like Lallana, Morgan etc benefited from us being in the lower leagues and as a result it being less difficult to break in and nail down a starting spot.

Even Our current poster boy for the academy struggled to nail down a spot and was nearly sold to Watford.

Ballard, doyle etc. will greatly benefit from us being in the championship next season.

Because when the club dropped to League 1 the academy became a lot less attractive for kids and their parents. Bugger-all decent prospects joining the academy system ten or twelve years ago means now, when those kids would now be hitting 20 and ready to try out senior football, we don't have much (certainly no PL-ready prospects) coming through.

We do have some outstanding 16-18yos coming through (from when we got promoted back to the PL and so the academy became more attractive again), but they're not ready for the PL yet. So we needed to buy in 18-21yos who were possibly ready to take the step up as Livramento/Lavia did.

The plan was that once Livramento/Lavia/Edozie/Larios/Mara have proven themselves to be good enough for a top ten club, we could sell them on for a profit and replace them with the Ballard/Doyle/Edwards/Dibling/Payne/Merry generation as they turn 21 and return from Championship/L1 loans.

Keep the club in the prem, keep the good young kids entering the academy, keep churning out PL-quality players. Drop out of the prem and the production line suffers, and you have to buy players to fill the gap where production fell off.

Hopefully the model still works that the 4 in bold above are in the first team next season - we've seen enough to know that Livramento (if fit), Edozie and probably Mara are more than good enough to become star players in the Championship. Larios had a few run outs where he looked lightweight but could see potential in his skill. I'm sure some of the next group will be in the squad most weeks next season, and wouldnt be surprised to see Ballard and Doyle in the squad for the next match or two. That said, last game of the season Walcott almost certainly starts as a farewell?

But missed the point that if that good why didn’t City fight to keep them by offering better role?

It concerns me that we are putting a lot of hope on someone who has only worked at youth level to a senior role at a clusterfuck club

We do seem to be completely obsessed by City and their youth. There is zero evidence anyone working within a youth setup can adjust quickly to 1st team duties - it’s a massive risk as we have found out. It’s like the thought process is that City are amazing, we can’t get any of their senior people so we’ll try the ones we can.

when you think about it - we are soon to be basing our entire club restructure on someone who has absolutely no experience of doing this at that level.

that sounds very familiar with this board. Not sure they will ever learn - hope the risk pays off

Really?  I've seen no end product from Edozie sadly - so I've no idea if he's good enough, but I hope he is.  Same with Mara - I've no idea if he's good enough to handle 46 games in the Championship and score loads of goals.  I liked his assist for KWP against Leeds and his Man City cup goal, but saying we've seen enough is stretching it a bit.

Let's hope you're right as they need to step up immediately from that first weekend in August.

I think with Edozie you can see he's a very skillful footballer, and in a lot of his appearances has waltzed through defences only to be let down by either a poor final ball or a poor miss from the strikers. Having him on the pitch gets defenders on edge, and to me, it's not that much of a coincidence that since he hasnt been playing, we havent (seemingly) been getting as many freekicks around the edge of the box for a certain someone to fire in...!

Mara definitely has potential, but just randomly being thrown on every 3rd game for 10 mins at the end or starting once every 5 games he's never going to get much rhythm. He's still very young and I dont think looked out of his depth at any point.
