Looking forward to this one, new ground and opponents,  hopefully similar score line to round 2 last season.

Most likely a complete change to the starting XI but should still put out a strong side, we've sold out 1500 fair way to go midweek , could do without penalties making it any later.

got to win, reckon the team will look something like..

One of the other keepers

Valery Lyanco Salisu Djenepo

JwP Diallo

S.Armstrong Walcott

Adams Mara

No way Djenepo plays, he's gone down with cramp earlyish in the last two games. KWP will play left back, or we'll have a back 3 with Redmond or Elyounoussi there.

Djenepo has to be rested. I think he'll stick to a back 4 and play Vokins.

Not sure I would make too many changes. Cambridge are a pretty decent outfit for a League One team.

Yep, beat Newcastle in January, can’t just rock up there with Walcott and a few U23s

Ideal game for lots of rotation with view to keeping first xi fresh for man u. Hopefully we see a couple of good u23's getting minutes too.

Not sure Ralph has ever done 'lots of rotation'?  More so away to a decent League 1 side.

There are bound to be changes, but expect to see largely a team from the usual 15 or so players

B team have a match against Norwich on Friday to consider too, but i reckon something along the lines of...

                   McCarthy

Valery  Bednarek  Lyanco  Vokins

               Romeu    Diallo

              Walcott    Redmond

That looks like a pretty good compromise to me 🤙

I'd give Elyounoussi another start, his form last season was kick started by a great performance in this fixture.

I'd definitely like to see some youngsters here mixed with experience. Ballard and Edwards must be worth a go from the bench and Simeu will surely see some game time. I agree about Vokins, due to the lack of fit full backs he's the more experienced option to slot in due to his loan spell at Ross County. Finnigan on the bench? Maybe let the new signing youngsters rest this one ready for United at the weekend, although I'd give Mara more game time.

Something like: McCarthy,

Valery, Lyanco, Stephens/Simeu, Vokins,

JWP, Romeu/Moi,

SArmstrong, Redmondinho,

AArmstrong, Mara.

Depends on whether Stephens and Romeu are close to exit too. If not play both, if so switch Stu to CM and Moi comes in the 10. Surely Redmond and his proclivity for playing well against lower league opposition has to play. Not sure about Bednarek. Villa bound?

I reckon it will be trickier than we think but we should have enough to get through.

I'd prefer something not like McCarthy, like Caballero or Lis.

Will be interesting to see the team, given the rumours to outbound players. Ideal for us to rest a few ahead of the weekend.

I would guess if Redmond, Stephens, Bednarek, Diallo, Romeu and Macca aren’t involved, they’re as good as gone. Would be more than happy with most of the first team out there, as still taking time to gel though.

Ralph never goes overly weak in cups, another win would be good for momentum too

He doesn't. A lot of foreign managers seem to actually really want to win the cups. It's predominantly the English managers that put out reserve teams. Apart from Poch and Koeman...

Wishful thinking about Ballard. Ralph gives chances to kids but they have to earn it. Far too early in the season for that right now, he'll want to give minutes to his first team squad players.

                     McCarthy

Valery  Bednarek  Lyanco  Perraud

             Romeu     JWP

             Diallo       Armstrong S

             Adams     Redmond

Need to give players a run  out and rest those with knocks.

I'd like to see Simeu play but Stephens and Lyanco need game time.

Not fussed about giving Stephens game time, he's going to be a liability no matter what. Might as well give Simeu a go.

Simeu would be my choice as well. He's played at Cambridge's level so it shouldn't be a problem. He is clearly our future, the sooner he is brought into the first team the better.

However I still think Stephens has a lot to offer. I wouldn't be so quick to dispose of him. Whilst he is here he will need game time. We are an 8njury away from needing him.

Tricky one, that's what Ralph is paid the big bucks for.

Banana skin fixture if Ralph plays a too disparate team IMO. Can see Mara, Simeu, Diallo in there but also the likes of Lyanco, Valery, Romeu and Theo in to provide experience. Unless there are advanced talks for McCarthy I’d expect him to play, so that will be interesting.

If Simeu is going out on loan I’d be surprised if they cup tied him as it makes him slightly less appealing.

I very much doubt anyone he goes on loan to will be going much further in the league cup

I think Macca was on the bench at the weekend, so I would think he's second choice atm.  I expect him to play. Will be interesting to see whether Redmond, Stephens, Bednarek, Diallo, Romeu all play, as all have been linked with moves away.  I'm also expecting us to play 4222, but maybe we'll go back to a 3atb. Taken JWP out, but he will probably play.

If I had to have a guess, it would be something like

Macca; KWP Lyanco Stephens Vokins; Romeu Diallo; Armstrong Walcott; Armstrong Mara

Not based on any info though.

For reference, this was the team we played last season against Newport.  I think the only 2 that were playing at that point last season was JWP and Stephens.

G 44 Fraser Forster
D 43 Yan Valery
D 5 Jack Stephens
D 35 Jan Bednarek
D 2 Kyle Walker-Peters
A 11 Nathan Redmond
M 23 Nathan Tella
M 8 James Ward-Prowse
M 27 Ibrahima Diallo
A 18 Armando Broja
M 24 Mohamed Elyounoussi

Any thoughts on best pub for pre-match ?

Hi all, Cambridge Utd fan here.  Really looking forward to tomorrow night, especially as the 2 sides have so rarely met. For anyone who doesn't know Cambridge that well thought I'd give a couple of pub suggestions if you've got the time to visit.

1. The Eagle, Bene't St: old, city centre pub where the discovery of DNA was announced; was a popular watering hole with pilots during WW2 and you can still see their graffiti from that time.

2. Cambridge Blue, Gwydir St; Live & Let Live, Mawson Rd, The Salisbury Arms, Tenison Rd: all three are excellent real ale pubs and for anyone travelling up by train are an easy walk from the station

3. The Mill, Mill Lane, classic city centre pub on the river; gets crammed with tourists in the summer but should be a little quieter in the evenings and if you don't like it The Anchor is virtually next door

4. The BrewHouse, King St: can be a little pricey but excellent and unusual range of their own brewed beer; food consistently good too; King Street itself has a number of other pubs on it too

5. Fort St George, Midsummer Common: another classic river side pub; wonderful atmosphere and great selection of beers; it's also on the football ground side of the city so with a bit of planning and time you could then make your way up to the ground from there (bus, taxi or a good 25-30 min walk

Hope that helps - wishing everyone a safe journey up.  Oh and for those of you who have never been to The Abbey before it will certainly be a change from your experience of Premier League grounds!

First team please, full squad, let them gel, f**k giving others a go.

I agree with this, and would add that we need to take cups seriously. Sadly we will play a very weak second string tonight and lose.

Not surprised by that. I hear really good things about Payne, and Ballard deserves a chance. Good to see.

I'd be disappointed if Diamond Edwards wasn't involved too, having played on the pre season tour. We're desperate for wingers/creative players.

Assuming Payne is viewed as a right back/RWB - maybe he'll get a chance to show we don't need to bring in further cover.

Yep, Edwards ought to be on the bench at least. I've never seen Payne play, just know that he's very well thought of.

I think it will be a mixture of experience and youth for tomorrow's cup game.

McCarthy

Valery  Stephens Lyanco  Vokins

Walcott  Diallo  Romeu  Redmond

Adam Armstrong Mara

The likes of Ballard, Payne and Edwards to get a chance in the second half. 3-0 to us Adam Armstrong to get a couple and Mara. COYR :)

Would personally stick away from the Brewhouse and the Eagle. Tourist town. Am a fan of the Cambridge Blue and I expect most people here would be too.

Also rate the Geldart, the Blue Moon and Devonshire Arms. Blue Moon has the widest beer selection of the 3 and is probably my favourite of them. If you can get out towards the royal standard as well, it has great Belgian beers on tap. Cambridge is very blessed with good pubs, so definitely stay away from spoons!
