Poor old Oldham, once a Prem side, now down in the National League. There are also seven clubs who once graced the top League wallowing in the depths of the old Third & Fourth Divisions. Bad Wolf Posted 4 August, 2022 Share Posted 4 August, 2022 Surprised to see Middlesbrough that far up. I though they'd had 5 or 6.

Sunglasses Ron Posted 5 August, 2022 Share Posted 5 August, 2022 (edited) I know not everyone agrees, and would prefer to trade places for a Portsmuff / Swansea style situation (i.e. a cup win followed by years floundering in the lower leagues), but this is definitely something to be proud of. The BBC are only interested in the 'Big 5', City, United, Chelsea, Arsenal, and the red Scousers - Leicester get their mention because they upset the master plan, and Forest get in because of the character that was Cloughie. The make weights are of no consequence, and are interchangeable.
OldNick Posted 13 August, 2022 Share Posted 13 August, 2022 31 years of PL riches and we still have been poor. The advantage we should have gained by having more money that the teams who haven't been in the league long has been wasted. Shamefull

That VVD sale should have helped us evolve the team in a time when we were in the post-koeman dip, but they gave 20 fucking million of it to MP to sign Carrillo and then sacked him a few weeks later ffs. One of the worst transfer windows I can ever remember. The summer under Hughes wasn't much more of a success either. Wasted the rest of the VVD fortune on Vestergaard, Gunn, Elyounoussi. Shocking really, targeted the wrong sorts of player.

skintsaint Posted 13 August, 2022 Share Posted 13 August, 2022 Remember the heady early days, top imports coming in to most teams and we go and get Carlton Palmer. *not factual at all and just a bit of a laugh.

Shocking really, targeted the wrong sorts of player. It was during the Koeman era that we got the right idea (mostly) by signing the best players from "lesser" leagues like Tadic, Mane, Forster and Pelle, and a couple of players that had previously been good but were overlooked by their clubs like Alderweireld and Bertrand. The following summer, bar Van Dijk and Romeu who ended up good, we brought in Austin, Clasie, Martina, Cedric (ish), Caulker and Juanmi and our transfer woes really stem from there. onwards. Thankfully the youth product of JWP came good when he did or we might not have been in the Prem this season.

We've definitely got some high potential/return players on the books now, and with Shields in charge of recruitment you have to think we won't waste that money again. spyinthesky Posted 16 August, 2022 Author Share Posted 16 August, 2022 What's the feeling about next year should we be relegated? I guess the likes of JWP/KWP would go and some of the older players like Romeu who will be near the end of his contract. Wonder if some of the younger players would hang around?
