This Gnonto kid at Leeds has looked sensational tonight, some talent they've got there. Leeds look like a team with some good players but badly coached.

They looked extremely poor apart from him. they couldn’t string three passes together on the most part and villa could use a simple pass to cut through their midfield. sounds familiar.

Leeds murdered them, particularly first half. Leeds looked decent, doesn’t bode well for us.

no way should that be a goal, rashford was definitely interfering with play ffs

That is a bollocks decision,  Rushford was shielding the ball

Yep. Rashford actually pulls his foot back as if he was about to play the ball. there were two United players there who could have played the ball. Rashford dummies the ball. Even though he doesn’t touch it he has interfered by “making an obvious action which clearly impacts on the ability of an opponent to play the ball”

How come Toney is still playing, did he get away without a ban?

Was just thinking the same, is it because he hasn't had his hearing yet? In which case get a move on and do it before we play them twice

Ridiculous decision. As Bill Shankly said 'if he isn't interfering with play what's he doing on the pitch'

He dummied, shielded, and took the defenders attention from an illegal position.

That needs a stewards enquiry.

Think the quote was from Brian Clough but I take your point. He also said , 'If one of my players isn't interfering with play he's not getting paid'

Lovely to see Klopp and the dippers going from bad to worse.

As for United, Rashford literally shepherded the ball to the scorer, obstructing the defender and occupying space where the defender would otherwise advance and make an interception or challenge. Either the VAR’s are thick or bent. Has the ultimate authority and Oracle on all things refereeing, Peter Walton, delivered his verdict yet?

Liverpool and Chelsea struggling does remind me of 2016, some teams could take advantage and get an unlikely European spot.

Not on the same scale as Leicester but if Arsenal win the league would still be a shock in my opinion

Yeah, it's great timing for Newcastle. They really aren't that good but they've got a shout on 4th, which will let them spunk  a ton next season.

Innocent until proven guilty … although there’s over 200 cases they’re investigating. By the time they realized they’d be charging Harold Shipman with at least 25, I don’t think they let him carry on working, did they? 😉

In all seriousness it does strike me as odd - it looks like a slam dunk so why the delay??

I’ve just seen the Man United goal, what a ridiculous decision that was how on earth has that stood?

Bonkers.

In all seriousness I know Howard Webb has just taken over and wants VAR used less, only for clear and obvious. I support this - it made the euros much better which was run like this. Unfortunately as it’s the first week they’ve gone way too far - the Brentford penalty was a foul to Bournemouth and this offside was ludicrous. Even worse, the VAR ref here was Oliver, our best ref??!!

If he thinks that’s the correct interpretation of the offside rule it just goes to show how insane the new rule is. Why have they tried to be so clever with both this and the handball rule? They worked for years, what happened yesterday is insane. Defenders may as well not bother ever playing for offside, which is a skill they’ve developed over their entire careers.

Of course, they d1cked around with the rules to try and remove grey areas which got interpreted badly by refs to favour the big teams.

We now don’t have grey areas but clearly mental rules which basically say nothing is offside and everything is handball and it’s simply a rubbish set of rules.

Agreed, and while I’d love to see all of Spurs, Chelsea and especially Liverpool starved of their champions league cash, the only club I wouldn’t want to benefit is Newcastle.

Bugger.

Jesse Marsch said on MOTD that it was their best performance since he has been there

To be fair, on points they annihilated Villa. Rather like us in the Ralph era, though - if you can’t score and ship goals it will see you hovering around the relegation zone, however we’ll you play.
I think they’ll be ok, I reckon Bournemouth, hopefully Everton, hopefully not us so AN Other. Forest were SOOO bad against us I’d say them but that’s 6 points v us and Leicester so maybe not? In which case I’d enjoy it if it was the Hammers

well jammy newcastle are now winning, but fulham have shown the blueprint of how to frustrate and potentially get a result at st james. unlucky with the penalty, it’s going to take a lot to get a result when we go there in the semis 2nd leg.

It will be if the ref is as shockingly bias towards Newcastle as todays one was

I stand slightly corrected. Cloghie's is by far the best quote but Shankly said

If a player is not interfering with play or seeking to gain an advantage, then he should be.

I think my memory merged the two.

I’m reading a lot of old pony about interfering with play since that goal. You used to get perfectly good goals disallowed because somebody was offside by the corner flag, I don’t think anybody wants to go back to that. Imagine if Prowse free kick yesterday was disallowed because KWP was stood off side at the far edge of the area outside of the keepers eyeline. Nobody on here would be quoting Shanks or Cloughie.

The issue is that football (as in players, managers, pundits) have pushed for consistency. The drive for less and less subjective decisions has led to complicated wording and rules around what used to be the referee’s opinion (handball is another one). The rule should be very simple “ if in the opinion of the referee the player is interfering, he’s offside. The problem is referees will have different opinions and managers will start whining about one goal given one week, and one disallowed the following week.

Spurs are piss poor.

Top four is already wrapped up, Arsenal, Man City, Man United and Newcastle in some form.

Liverpool, Chelsea and Spurs are burnt out and done. There always comes a point when teams burn out after years of high press and domination, this is it.

Watching this North London Derby, Spurs are non existent, had a couple of chances but this is easy for Arsenal.

I do agree that generally the rule now is much improved. However Rashford was over that ball for a long time. At the very least it was marginal.
