From memory

Pavel Kuka

Paulo Alves (didn't he sit in the stands for Wimbledon away and decide better off it 96/97 season)

David Livermore

David Weatherall

Ralf Weber

Rod Wallace coming back in 95 but he decided to stay at Leeds and we signed Watson instead.

Jamie Vardy was basically a done deal to Saints from Fleetwood, under Nigel Adkins in the January (2012) transfer window. At the last minute we had the opportunity to sign Japanese superstar Tadanari Lee, and we felt that they were similar ability, but that Lee could help us grow the Saints brand/support in the Far East.

I wonder whatever happened to those two guys and what sort of careers they had? 🤔

Yes you're right, i remember that now, Fleetword chairman had even been telling people that he was joining us, what a cock up that was.

Didn’t we nearly make Matt Piper our record signing but were pipped by Sunderland? He was then immediately crippled and never seen again.

That might be real or a memory from one of my Championship Manager games c.2002.

As an aside, nothing we attempt will ever trump Rivaldo to Bolton.

Piper, yes he was a big prospect at the time.

there was a Spanish winger. Can’t remember the name (Pedro?)

I am sure Clinton Morrison was another when we first got relegated to the Championships?

What about the famous/fabled Louis Saha and Steed Malbranque story?

Kaka was another tale (no idea if true)

Adebeyor and Drogba I am sure were linked to us???

Strachan said we could have signed the pair for something like £12m, Lowe said why would we make our competitors finacially richer and us finacially weaker.

You can see the stuff on Adebeyor and Drogba above.

Tbf, the club also signed Billy Sharp a few days after signing Lee. But striking options of Lambert, Sharp and Vardy would’ve been quite something.

I seem to remember us agreeing a fee for Defoe when he was at West Ham, only for him to sign for Spurs?

Must have been 2003/04.

I will see your Rivaldo to Bolton and raise you Zidane to Blackburn...as then Chairman said "Why do we want to sign Zidane when we have Tim Sherwood!"

My source for that was Nigel Adkins himself, when he did a talk at a 'Leaders in Digital Sport' conference at Stamford Bridge about 8 years ago. He could just about see the funny side of it, but wondered if he would have lasted longer at Saints had he bagged the player HE had wanted of the two.

Interesting if he was saying that before Leicester went on their run to win the league. I'm sure Vardy would have been quite instrumental in their promotion campaign, but I don't believe he really did much in the PL until 2015/16.

Maybe it was more recent than 8 years ago, I cant really remember the exact year. He was more making a point that Vardy had gone on to score many goals and make many appearances for Leicester, whist Lee disappeared after 7 Championship games.

Thomas Tuchel. There was talk that Les Reed approached him after Koeman left.

True, they did. At one stage they thought they had him.

Not sure what changed, probably PSG interest, but they had talks with him 100%.

Colin Todd went to Everton instead

Was he the one that had agreed to sign , personal terms etc done, then Lawrie got a phone call next day to say Mrs Todd wouldn't let him come to us?

Didn’t ibrahimovic turn us down?

Yes in his book he says his agent told him Southampton were interested and he said: “What the f***! Southampton! Is that my level? Southampton!”

La Ling Dutch guy who L Mac reckoned would have won us the Div 1 title, Keith Newton full back from Blackburn, Rod Thomas from Swindon, Colin Todd from Derby.

I've never read what went wrong there and why it didn't go through.

Although we weren't linked with him at the time (so technically outside the original post) another player we were interested in around the same time as La Ling was Trevor Francis. Story was later told that Lawrie and John Bond had agreed a deal for Francis to join us from Man City with either Williams or Graham Baker going the other way, plus cash. Saints board had agreed it but the then City chairman Peter Swales vetoed it in fear of a fans backlash.

Ted Bates had a run on missing out on full backs as Tommy Gemmill was another c 1970/71. That seemed quite an exciting prospect to me at the time (aged about 9 or 10). Gemmill was a full Scotland international, and had been part of the 1967 Celtic team who won the European Cup.

in a match Scotland lost to put an end to their World Cup qualifying hopes, Gemmill had been sent off for kicking a West German. I've no doubt he'd have been at home with the Alehouse team we had at the time. I remember reading he attended a couple of matches at The Dell so it seemed a matter of time before his signing was announced. Except he didn't sign. Joined Forest instead. Don't think that went too well so perhaps we dodged one there.

Just as an aside and on the flip side

Snaffling Lee Barnard from the clutches of Leeds from Southend - they had their programme all printed up welcoming him to Leeds for the game the same night he was possibly sat on the bench for us having gazumped them at the 59th minute of the eleventh hour.

Right: carry on 😳

The one time a club has been disappointed in not having Matt Paterson.
