Well, it definitely won't be Suella Braverman and the rebirth of the Conservative Party

For some reason, the Acting Prime Minister gets to carry on until September 5th.

An exciting new future for this country beckons. £xxx billions of tax cuts only a few weeks away, and with no impact on public services at all. It’s a shame they didn't do all this stuff before now.

So, the leadership election is underway and, interestingly enough it isn't a simple first past the post which I was led to believe previously was by far the fairest and most effective way of running elections. Maybe not after all.

Anyway this poll from an influential Tory blog is interesting. Big old Penny and, er, Kemi Badenoch seem to be most preferred by members. Riiiight.

I dont mind that if it means it gives more opportunity for a new face to come through. Also 20 supporting MPs to get on the ballot paper is better (lower) than it was looking like a few days ago

Well, he was desperate to hang it out until the Conference which would have been another six weeks and got him a load of opportunity to do "see what you're giving up on" speeches and appearances/standing ovations, like some Elton John farewell tour.

Well done to the 1922 Committee for cutting that out.

It's an odd election. I don't know who is actually going to win, but I still feel I know plenty of names that definitely won't win. At least half the contenders are there as a profile raising operation to get into the cabinet.

All the pundits and journos on the Andrew Neill show thought it was going to be Sunak v Truss. Javid speech today was okay and he seems the one I trust the most. Know someone who worked with him in Health and she said he was a decent bloke who wanted detail. Although she liked working with Hancock too

4 of the top 5 places filled by women. I reckon the dirty old men who form the majority of the members of the Conservative party will be having wet dreams at the thought of those beauties.

I can’t really call this one either. I wonder if certain candidates will start encouraging tactical voting when it gets to the later stages. You know that  tactical voting that all Tories hate.

Not making any calls on this until I’ve heard from Duckie and see where all the candidates sit on his Pinkometer scale.

The swivels are going to find it difficult to chose between Suella, Kemi and the delectable Pritti. It would be funny if the swivel vote was split so that none of the "non pinkoes" were to make it into the later stages.

If we get the run off between Sunak and Mordaunt, it will be Saints v Pompey…..! The name Southampton plastered all over Sunak’s promotional film…..

Refreshing hearing someone like Ken Clarke on Newsnight. Some these sound bite driven light weights should listen and learn.

he is appalled and said first 24 hours has been depressing.

Some rumours tonight that Labour will follow through on their commitment to push for a VONC in the next few days to get him out immediately. It’ll be quite staggering to see what happens with that.

Hmmm. It might work but I don't think it will. For a start it means an election would have to be called.

I can't see the Tories letting it go through and actually think they will scramble to the moral high ground "look at the Labour Party playing politics, don't they know there's a war on". The Daily Mail will of course go for that.

I had a similar feeling the other day. The very minute John Major decided to come out and say that Boris needed to go now was exactly the minute he never was going to go now. The current Tories can still agree on some things: don't give Labour or John Major the satisfaction.

It's simply a tactic to get Tory MPs to publically back Boris and look a bit stupid.  I'm not sure it's worth bothering with especially as the the leadership contenders will be ripping themselves to shreds.  Labour are better off standing back and letting them look increasingly divided.

They could wheel out "The charge of the lightweight brigade" quote again though - that's got the power to stick.

Fuck me these campaign launches today are nauseating.

Sunak telling us we need to reduce the tax burden when he was the chancellor that created it in the first place.

Dorries claiming Liz Truss is a stronger Brexiter than her or JRM, whereas she actually supported the remain campaign and only flipped when she realised it would land her a cabinet post.

And those two are the front-runners apparently.

Actually, the more I think about it, I'd be happy if it was Truss. Starmer would rip her to pieces at the dispatch box.

I dunno, Truss is pretty clear on where she stands in relation to cheese but I don’t even know if Starmer has a position on any dairy products, let alone cheese. I think Starmer will have a tough time if the Tories attack along those lines.

She may know cheese, but she doesn't know the difference between the Baltic and Black seas.

Good to see the man who is not a quitter, who quit his last two jobs, has quit the leadership race further burnishing his non-quitting credentials.

Carry out a simple mental exercise. Picture each of the candidates in turn in the position of Prime Minister; at PMQs, addressing the nation on some serious matter, and on the World stage representing the UK.

Then try not to slit your wrists in despair.

Alastair Campbell has new show coming out called Make me Prime Minister or something where give members of public tests to see if they have what it takes. Very timely

Can't imagine why.

My son lives in Sunak's constituency in rural North Yorkshire. In his local pub most of the customers fit the image of traditional Yorkshiremen. When they get onto politics they make Duckie sound like a socialist.Good Tory voters but  nevertheless I have heard one of them saying that he wasn't going to vote for a "f...ing Paki".

Hope Sunak wins as the Daily Mail seems to hate the thought of him winning.

The Mail has long been the most odious newspaper in the UK which is going some to beat The Sun into second place. Funny to see them turning their guns onto Sunak now and stoking up a civil war in the Rory ranks. They even got a front page dig in at Javid but in using Patel it kind of backfired as she didn’t stand as it would appear she had less support than him. As you say, it will be good if Sunak wins as they will need to divide their front pages up between attacking Sunak and Starmer. Leaves them in a bit of a quandary at the next election!

Yeah I saw that, weird that they have it in for him as I thought he was by far their best chance to see off Labour despite being a smarmy tax-dodger. Can't see Truss or that Skate slapper winning a GE.

I guess there is nothing the Tories hate more than paying a little bit more tax.

Tugenhat the only white male left, fucking sexist racists.

I’m joining the Labour Party, they’re the only party left that only picks leaders that look like me.

I feel this lacks some of the drama required. It needs more X Factor slow-motion montages, with Cheryl crying and a pointless cover of some Westlife ballad.

Apparently she is very popular amongst the party members, although not many could pick her out from her picture. If they don’t stitch her up she will give Sunak a run for his money. She managed to slip in a Thatcher and Falklands reference too which will give Duckie a stiffie.

Had to laugh at Johnson saying any of the 8 will “wipe the floor” with Starmer having had his arse handed to him on a plate at every PMQs. Leaving with his head held high too 😂

Yeah, that was a  ridiculous thing to say.Hunt & Tommy Tugenhat  won’t.

The others probably will though.
