Haven't the club always said that SMS was designed as an all-seater stadium and so the angle of the slope that the seats are on is unsuitable for safe standing rows?

Not sure about that, but I don’t think so. There’s different types of safe standing but it seems like the premier league version is just one seat = 1 standing space with handrails in front. Cardiff have done it and it doesn’t look different to their regular seating, they’ve just fitted handrails over over each row of seats.

I think "Safe" is the keyword. Standing in seating areas is I believe something of a risk and we would probably need to create a dedicated standing area. And I hasten to add that I am not anti-standing by any means, but I do believe people should have the choice of sitting if they want to. While at away grounds at the moment standing is essentially compulsory and that rules out a good number of supporters who can't stand for long periods - I will probably be one of them when my dodgy knee gives up.

Will this happen at Saints? Where are we with this project? Heard nothign out the club that I can remember.

We've got Northam and Itchen North as informal standing areas, the club hate the Itchen North and are actively trying to close that area down rather than just steward the away fans properly. Can't see Saints actually investing in anything like this.

Have stood at every away game for probably last 20 years so whether it's safe standing or not no real change I think

Seen a few on twitter today say that they've been moved due to the club allocating stewards seats in Block 1.

Don't know why they can't just take that from the away allocation, we give 3,300 to the away teams which is 300 more than we're required to going by the 10% or 3,000 rule the PL set.

Exactly this.

We seem to bend over backwards for away fans for both league games and cup games where we give more tickets to away fans then required.

Why do the club have to have stewards in the seats in block 1? there is a netting over seats between the dividing barrier and where the away fans sit as it is.

Like others have said i cant see the club istalling rail seats any time soon.

wonder what the cost is for doing that, say per thousand seats?

From a business point of view, there is no point in installing these “rails”/standing seats

As it stands it wouldn’t give us any extra capacity as it would most likely be capped by the number of seats in the block currently anyway, we’d obviously have to spend money installing them, and then finally fans would probably expect that particular area to be cheaper which makes it less financially viable.

I’d rather the club spent the money towards the transfer kitty!

I suppose the argument is whether safe standing would improve atmosphere and results on the pitch, but that isn’t quantifiable, however cheaper tickets would improve the general feel good factor.

As many clubs will install safe standing areas it will make it easier for the authorities to pick out and clobber those that don't but have persistent standers in seats. There will be added pressure to conform for the likes of us as there's now an option for all clubs, I'd suggest that if they decide not to install rails then all-seater will mean all-seated.

Initially I’d think not that much if it’s just barriers that are going in. But then I’m no structural engineer, there may have to be FEA studies done on whether the footings will be sound etc and potentially additional strengthening/rework underfoot.  Seeing as, so far, more PL clubs than not remain uncommitted to it, perhaps it’s more onerous than just an installation of barriers.
