Inclined to agree. Its not just on him as SR have blocked pathways and allowed the best kids to leave... but the fact Dibling can school the best defensive players in the prem on a frankly routine basis but couldn't get a game last year in the champ is beyond a joke. Thats one hell of a transformational summer for the lad... 🙄.

Totally agree it seems the better the academy players do the less likely there are to get more game time under him!

As I said…unpopular 😂

I’m not sure a tight promotion end to the season would have been a particularly nice environment to bring in a 17 year old when quality players like Brooks were available. Diblings performances this season don’t immediately translate into last seasons games so it’s not as simple as saying ‘he’s good now so should have been playing last year’. 

I also don’t think many managers would be trusting an 18 year old and a young kid in Fernandes in their first season in the prem when their job is slipping away. Especially more so I don’t think many would set the team up for them to be central to it. Dibling has played more minutes than any other 18 year old in the league this year. He’s obviously very good and one of our better players but I don’t see many other managers trusting their talented kids like Martin is and I think the way we play allows them both to play their natural games rather than something against their nature like a Sean Dyche (just an example) team would. 

Anyway, it’s unpopular and unprovable so I’ll just let it get shouted down and stop there and I’ll bring it back up when the manager does change and we’ll see how any new way of playing suits them.

Dibling showed he was ready at the start of last season to play a part. Martin instead chose to destabilise his team by bringing in attacking midfielders we didn't need and the team lost momentum before scraping through the playoffs.

I don't buy that Martin is good for our youth players. Meghoma probably wouldn't be at Brentford now if that was the case.

Meghoma turned 18 this summer and has yet to make an appearance for Brentford in the PL. I’ve been critical of the club and it’s opportunities to young players in recent years but this idea that Meghoma or even Dibling have been held back by Martin despite being ready just isn’t true. Him, SAA and Dibling all had minutes last season at perfectly normal times for kids their age and the context the club found itself in.

Btw, just on this he played 2 minutes in the Championship and made 3 FA cup appearances in January so he must have made a hell of an impression on you in the August EFL cup game against League 2's Gillingham.

At left back we have.... Manning, Stephens (somehow), Taylor, KWP - at what point was there a pathway into the team for Meghoma? Recruiting Taylor (and not even playing him) in the summer sent a pretty strong message he wasn't in the manager's plans.

The club were clearing expecting KWP to leave in the summer and were making provisions for that. Suspect that comes to reality in January tbh but as it didn’t happen we had one more than we expected. 

Not that it has much to do with Meghoma who I suspect had indicated he wanted to leave quite a bit earlier hence why he wasn’t involved in pre season. Like I said, I’ve been critical of the club in this area in the past so don’t really blame him, but I don’t think it’s on Martin when Meghoma has just turned 18 and is yet to play a minute in the PL for Brentford so clearly isn’t seen as ready not just by Martin. I’m sure he goes on to have a cracking career and one we’ve messed up on a bit but the idea that he should be getting regular minutes in the Championship or PL just doesn’t stand up. These kids, Meghoma/Doyle and even JJM (none of which have proven they should be playing in the PL/Championship yet) were really let down by the year we got relegated more than anything. It meant that everything last season had to be focused on the short term.
 

The best environment for these kids is on a settled PL club where they can be allowed to make mistakes when given chances(hence moves to Brentford and Brighton). Fighting relegation, then aiming to be promoted then having to stay up isn’t really that environment unless you’re exceptional and have a manager willing to trust you which many wouldn’t (hence why I praised Martin for doing so with Dibling).

Had some recent luck with Livramento and Lavia but it's nice to have an attacking talent of this level, and one of our own products too.

The only thing which could stop this being an absolute giant sale is his lack of output numbers-wise, but I think that's a real reflection on the lack of quality around him rather than much else. Everything positive which we do comes from Dibling managing to beat 2/3 players on the break.

He’s so like a youngJack Grealish. Like Jack Grealish did at Villa I’d love to see him stay with us next season in the championship  next season and rip it up then give us another year or two on re-promotion to the English premier soccerball league but as a player trading club I’m certain this will be the only season we see him in a saints shirt. Another one who will go onto great things and we will look at in a few years time and can’t believe he ever really played for us

I'm probably smoking something, but after his experiences at CHelsea I hope he does exactly what you say.  He is, already, far too good for Saints though but he (and to a lesser degree Fernandes) is a player that gets you off your seat as you never know what they will do next and are exciting in a way very few other players are.

He's a joy to watch and the way he just glides past players is remarkable....I can't believe he's only 18 years old.

I think you may be right. It was interesting what Martin said after the Brighton game, i.e, quite a quiet lad, fairly introverted, how they just try to keep it about the football for him so that he can come in relaxed and play etc. May well be that a club like saints (with less spot light) is seen as a  good place for him to develop over the next year or two. I don't think he'll be rushing to move whilst he's playing regularly - just to go and sit on a bench at a bigger club. Equally though, Dibling did remark on the manager not playing him last season in his own interview 😅

He does he glides, like Grealish he doesn’t seem to be that quick but obviously is because he can accelerate away. Makes it all look very easy, always got time on the ball. Going to be a top player

Signed a new contract a year ago until 2026, which i assume is end of June.  18 months wouldn't mean we sold to the first tyre-kicker. 

Selling in January makes little sense to both the club and the player (his development will be slowed by no longer being one of the first names on the teamsheet).

If Lavia was £50m, he's that with a good sell on clause but only if it's quick because of the contract term. And once our relegation is confirmed, the agreements will be put in place quickly I would think. Let's hope we stay up.

Yes, people change but also it doesn’t mean that he’s going anywhere anytime soon. Not unless we’re in dire financial straights and he’s effectively forced out so we can take the money.

2026 with an option of a further year, assume we take up that option (why wouldn't we?), its technically a 2027 contract end.

I'd be surprised if he doesn't sign a small extension to his contract.  He would get a huge pay rise and still know a big club will pay to get him if he continues as he has been this year

Dont think home sickness will come into it unless he pines for the South Coast - I do!! With the salary he'll be on and the length of contract he can take his family with him if he and they so chose. When he went to Chelsea that didnt happen and was never likley to given his age and where he was in his develoment.

Great news if he's being sold, it means SR can invest it into four or five midfielders and defenders who will up our possession stats, whilst also have the benefit of getting rid of one those pesky striker types who give the ball away by doing things like shooting or crossing.

Can that be possible, for the agent to obstruct it if he wants to stay at Saints. Of course it isn’t in the agents interest for him to remain here, and understandably he’ll be researching other options, but if TD wants to stay that should be the end of it.

On the other hand RM’s summary of contract talks may be as reliable as his injury updates on Ross Stewart.
