He was clearly brought in as the main striker to replace Ings, then got that goal on his debt, which seemed promising. He started around 12 games at the start of the season and only got 1 goal after that vs Villa (great finish). There were some big chances he missed in that run too - United at home springs to mind, and then Broja rightfully came into the team. It's difficult for AA because outside of poaching he doesn't seem to bring much to the team. Compare that with Adams, whose finishing is very frustrating, but at the same has other attributes which add to our overall game. There are plenty of games where Adams has not scored, but still played very well. With Armstrong, if he's not scoring, he's not effective, and I'm not sure that's enough in the PL these days (unless you're Ronaldo). United at home was a chance, but not a big chance. One that he created with his run, let us remember.

It was a big chance tbh, clean through on goal and only a few yards out.

He was just inside the area heading to the right and he tried to cut the ball back inside the far post. By no means a clear chance. Certainly not ‘clean through on goal’.

Think you might be talking about different chances. I can remember a chance where the ball span slowly onto the post, from the far right side of the area, but not sure what game that was. For me, the big chance against Man U was the one where we won the ball back high up the pitch, it was played through to AA and he hit a shot left-foot nearly straight at De Gea. The sort of chance that Ings was burying for us just months before. Armstrong doesn't seem a bad player to me, and with work he could become really useful to the press and with his pace. He can score goals, he's proven that at Blackburn and at times for us, he just needs a run of games and to build a proper partnership with Adams. Sadly, I don't know if we can afford a slow start, so maybe someone in instead and a loan for him is best.

SNSUN Posted 1 July, 2022 Share Posted 1 July, 2022 I wonder if Long leaving offers him a reprieve? Him and Che (and N'Lundulu if you're splitting hairs) are now our only recognised strikers with Prem experience. Ok we still have Walcott, Tella and Redmond who can play up top but not well. I can definitely see two strikers incoming now.

In previous years I'd assume we'd be about to put out a press release saying Ralph was happy with his striking options only for Che to get injured as the window shut. Now, I believe you're right. He needs some coaching and some confidence, but he has the attributes to be a good striker. Perseverance is needed to bring it out. But if he wants to be up north because he hasn't settled, then get it sorted and go sign openda... Edited 3 July, 2022 by Saint86
