Besides the quality of football, It’s the soccer aid esq crowd which is the biggest turn off for me.

Was just saying to the missus that the biggest thing missing from womens football now is the atmosphere. For some reason people seem to forget how to chant when they go to women's games.

I guess they just attract a different crowd, predominantly women and kids.

That’s great for them as it’s their target audience, who’ll they’ll hopefully inspire to play the game…. It makes a horrible watch though.

Yeah safe to say not many beered up lads in the crowd. Sweet really but like a different sport

Giving it a go as it's England and I'm finding myself mildly invested. Started poorly but are now bossing it. Yes the quality is not quite there compared to the men but its quite entertaining from a patriotic point of view.

TBF different atmosphere. Commentator said never experienced anything like it before and expect it is amazing for the players to have so many watching and cheering

I get it, I agree, just think if you want people to come back to games repeatedly you need to build a proper atmosphere.

I have a passing interest because I always want England to win in every sport. I've watched this second half and it's been pretty unentertaining so far. I heard the first half was better? Maybe I'll give the entire game a go for the next one and see.

The first half was pretty dire. I am glad I didn’t hang around for the second half, if it was worse.

I'm pleased it's getting a higher profile and I did watch the saints ladies promotion game and wanted them to win but generally the pace of the game is just too slow to keep my attention. I wonder if things would improve if they made the pitches a bit smaller?

I get that. Even things like the announcers and commentators are very light and informal. It makes it seem less consequential in their desire to make the whole thing more family friendly. They'd be better off looking at something like women's tennis which has done a really good job of marketing itself over the years.

70k attendance they said, so thought to myself that it might be worth watching. Turned it over as soon as I heard what sounded like 70 thousand kids cheering. That was almost as annoying as the commentary. The football wasn't much better. Not for me I'm afraid.

I prefer club football to internationals, and have seen a fair number of dull internationals over the years. So, I wasn't expecting too much. England's early goal meant that game management kicked in early here. Which is as it should be, but doesn't always make for a spectacular game. A few of the players had to check themselves once or twice to pull back from a possession losing attack.

There was a fair bit of pressure to get off to a winning start too, and was evident in the play. Austria forced a couple of saves fairly late on. England didn't get things their own way, and will be looking to create more.

As Austria had to push up a bit, England looked to exploit the space, making for a more interesting closing spell. There was a decent shout for an Austrian penalty. The otherwise excellent Bright allowed space for a shot, and there was the chance of some late drama.

It's been posted about the crowd composition. Lots of kids, but I thought there was a lot of noise and support.

Not sure I understood the 'branding' on the electronic boards around the pitch at last night's game.  One of the first ones was from 'VW' which stated something along the lines of "Women Play Football", followed by "#notwomen'sfootball" which I guess is trying to say it's just 'football' and the 'women' bit is superfluous.

Two adverts later and it was claimed that 'Visa are proudly sponsoring Women's football'.

Not exactly a consistent message :mcinnes:

It made me hesitate to click all the women's football links on the beeb today. 🙂

All going off in town. Big mob of NI lasses in the giddy bridge apparently. Old bill down there now after a couple of hundred saints led by sue whistle charged their escort, Sue seen bouncing around calling it on. Norways firm down by the Guildhall square tried making a move but immediately wrapped up by the OB and put in Turtle Bay. Word is that Pompey are on their way up to have it with the saints girls. Going to be an interesting night.

Looks like a small crowd at St Mary's

Gaby said 11,000 sold. Certainly looks very low with ten minutes to go. maybe they’re all in the bars. Or maybe Turkish is right and they’ve all been arrested pre-game.

At 2-0, I was worried it would be a rout. Caught with an always play it out from the back philosophy against excellent pressing attackers. The penalty was easily avoidable as well. But there was a couple of moments, even in that first half when NI looked more capable, when they went more direct.

Shoring up the midfield at half time made a difference, and a good reactive header for the goal. There was just an attack or two, when NI might sneak a second. But Norway are a different class and widened the lead again. England might have their work cut out for them.

Some NI players grew into the game, so there are positives for them.

Good analysis. There was a great atmosphere both around town and in the ground, and far more racket than during most Saints games. There was a gap in class but hopefully with the NI players going professional in the last year there will be an improvement, and they will certainly have learned from the experience.

There should be a great atmosphere next Friday with a sell out crowd.

Denmark vs Germany was balanced for the first 10 mins. From there, Germany kept increasing their drive. Denmark were pegged back, and like so many teams trying to pass it out, had no plan to counter Germany's pressing. The ref made it clear early on that some strong challenging was okay. That led to it being a more physical game, than the other ties. It suited Germany who were happy to drive down the middle, and make blocks when they conceded. 4 goals, hitting the wood work 4 times and a disallowed effort too. Some good passing moves from them too, which can be harder to pull off in tournaments.

Tuned in just before Portugal equalised to make it 2-2. The commentator said it had taken them a long time to recover from Switzerland's first half. She said that Portugal had held onto the ball earlier. The Swiss were the physically stronger looking, so you could see why Portugal would struggle.

From the bit I saw, Portugal were playing quick passing moves and looked set to get a third. But it just didn't come. They made subs, Jessica Silva who looked most likely looked rightly peeved at going off, and failed to convert even more chances. As with nearly all the games so far, either side can create. The Swiss had a couple of late chances, before a final failed onslaught from Portugal.

Lots of highlights in an entertaining draw.

Sweden will be disappointed not to have got a couple in the first half. Netherlands, who lost 2 players through injury and were a little disjointed, came back into it in the second. They got their equaliser, and showed much better movement. I'd say Sweden still looked the most likely to get the winner. But there are a lot of strong sides in the competition, and Netherlands had a chance to nick it too.

The refs continue to let the games be physical, but fair. No play acting from the players, who get on with it, and play to the whistle. Great to see.

In true BBC fashion, here they are massively over celebrating the most unimpressive things in the name of diversity and inclusion.

“Beckham Esque” more like Dave down Green park on a Sunday. Perhaps they’re just surprised she managed to get the ball off the floor?

Could you imagine this was proper football, ignoring a 2v1 in favour of a 59 yard shot resulting in you sticking the ball miles wide and over. Shambolic 😂

So you do not have any daughters who wish to watch and play football if you did you would have a different perspective

Giving young people an opportunity to play sport is what it is about

What are you rambling on about?

If I was a player at this euros, I’d feel patronised and embarrassed with the media treating them like children.

If any daughter(s) decided they wanted to play football, I’d educate that shooting from 50 yards and that being the result is fucking shit. Not blow smoke up their arse.

I’d also from a pretty early age manage expectations around the quality of female football and the reasons why it’s not a mainstream sport and why they don’t deserve to be paid anything like what the men do.

Your argument around giving young people an opportunity to play sport doesn’t stack up. Why don’t the media push grassroots football as hard as they do women’s football. The standard is comparative.

I’m fully convinced at any player of Hampshire premier football and above could walk into the women’s game and be the greatest player the game has ever seen, such is the standard.

Indeed it was. At this point you wonder if the media are also taking the piss to generate retweets and clicks. "Beckham-esque" pull the other one.
