I have often wondered why they don't make the pitches and goals smaller in Women's football. It might make it a better all round spectacle for viewers.

And the shorts?

While it may benefit the game as a spectacle, you have to think about the logistics of it especially as grass roots level, providing smaller pitches and goals would be a logistical nightmare.

Fantastic win today, and great timing to find form before the knockouts!  James looks a star in the making.  Let's hope she's not quite as brittle as her brother has been in recent years

I think they should play with a smaller ball which is logical as they don't have the same leg strength as men players.  Women's football always makes me think it's what the PL would look like if they used a basketball.

I wondered how much longer this rubbish was going to be infecting the TV and found out that it goes on until 20th August!!!!

You should get one of those modern "smart" TVs which have different channels. Be warned, the technology is quite progressive though.

Panama are 1-0 up yet still 20/1 to win against France which is slightly mad but guess lead not expected to last

Nope! But what a goal it was, just seen a clip of it, oh my! Worth looking for. Their first ever goal at a World Cup and one to remember.

As for poor Saint in Paradise, with the effort he put in to posting here he could have found his TV remote control.

They just scored a second - a penalty and they all celebrated wildly although still 2-5 down. Moment that world cups are good for

Well good luck to all of you who enjoy watching lesser quality Football, you obviously are easy to please. However as I pay a fortune

every month for all my TV channels I expect good value for my money. Women's football just doesn't meet that criteria. I will also

mention that men's Australian Football isn't much better so I avoid that as well.

I also enjoy non-league football, for me competitiveness is just as important as level of quality.

Some of the games in this world cup will have had a better standard of football than we'll see in a lot of games this season, by the way.

Well said.

I don’t know why it’s on the main board either. If I started a thread about pub football it wouldn’t be.

It's been a tournament of shocks so far!  Germany join Brazil, Italy & Canada in being eliminated in the group stages, and the US only scrapped through.  Seems a great opportunity even with our injuries for us to win, albeit a long way to go.

The thing I like about Lord Duckhunter is at least he makes it indubitably clear that he's a prat. To make the effort to come on to a thread to tell people he isn't interested in the subject of the thread needs a very special personality..

it's been fucking shite is what it's been. Some of the teams in it would struggle to beat boys U11s teams.

Hopefully the knock outs will be better because so far what i've seen of it has been awful

Man, if you are looking for top quality football, you are in for a horror season when you see Armstrong blazing it over from 3 yards out every week.

@Turkishyou'll love the lack of diversity in the South African women's side, especially considering South Africa's white population is more than double the UKs black population.

#shitstirrer.

They lost so the lack of diversity cost them

Lioness dived. Amazing how the commentator can’t see that.

the pundits called it out, so obvious a dive.

The commentators are really annoying, everything is brilliant and amazing, for example Lucy Bronze hit a pass, "brilliant ball from Bronze" It went straight at the defender who cleared it easily under no pressure.

I think she is a decent commentator although her voice is slightly annoying. The one you referred to looked like it was a good pass and was cut out so she got it wrong - happens. I think they have got better generally at not saying everything is great when women are playing as did seem like they were loathe to criticise previously but less so now

To be honest England have been pretty poor throughout this tournament, scraped past Haiti and Denmark before beating a very poor China.  If they pull this one out of the fire it may spur them on, but all in all i think they have been poor.

Knockout football, it’s the result that matters, but blimey we’ve rode our luck to get through that one.

Nigeria’s defence and pressing was immense, at least there aren’t too many other teams that play like that.

Very lucky to get through that. 4 cracking penalties though after that awful first one.

Interesting that our best performance came after we were forced to change it up because of Walshs injury, now we'll be forced to change it up again.

I'd be very disappointed if we are that complacent again.

Despite the BBC proclaiming that England were dominated, which we weren't, an organised and physical Nigeria didn't have enough to break ten-women England down.

Then as expected, the inexperience of big occasions sent penalties flying all over the show.

A good day where England demonstrated what winners do, against an impressive but homeward-bound Nigeria.

Next.

Thought England finishing would likely be better in the shootout.

More evidence of the pointlessness of VAR when it won't even have a look when Bronze barged into the back of the nigerian player in the box.

At least it’s consistent.  England should have had a penalty in a previous match under the same circumstances of a player (cannot remember who) was run in to when in the penalty area.

didn't the commentator say that VAR never reviewed it because the ref didn't make a decision? i thought they said that anyway, which is weird as the amount of premier league games get pulled back because the ref missed something.

Quite a deep philosophical question there, when is a referee not making a decision, in fact them making a decision to not do anything

Same ‘fuse’ as other stars in their early years, Beckham and Rooney.

Amused by Kelly’s run up for the penalty, looked more like preparation for a hop, skip and jump , or long jump.

But credit to her  she certainly hit it with conviction and put it away well. (Perhaps Southflake should get the blokes preparing for penalties in this fashion).

I've been following Southampton FC Women closely for two seasons now. I love it, but it's still incredibly difficult to follow for lack of basic info/coverage. I figured many other fans are curious, but haven't made a connection for this reason.

So I wrote a Saints FC Women 101.

I start with the very, very basics: where they play, what league they're in and a two paragraph history. Then I profile the squad, give a rough tactical guide, a quick review of last season, new signings, their prospects for the next. The idea being, you can become a reasonably informed fan in like 10 mins. Was really fun, learnt so much by writing it.

Plan to do one every summer.

I loved the pennos in the France / Aussie match.  Great drama!

Here's hoping England find a bit of form today.  If they can go up a couple of gears we have a real shot at winning
