Thought I’d start a thread on prospective signing, Mattias Svanberg, largely because Alex Crook says there’s no substance to the deal - so I assume it’s imminent.

Im guessing he’d be eyed as a centre-mid option as opposed to a #10.

He looks a decent addition for the money, would suit a change of formation to a 3man midfield (which I doubt will happen). Seems a mix of Stu Armstrong and JWP to me - but he's isn't the direct ball carrying #10 that I personally want us to sign.

Agree. Think he's att his best att the top of a 3man midfield. He's not a defensive player but doesn't mind a good tackle. A bit faster than JWP. Can find a good pass  and has a good shot. Not a playmaker though. A hard working offensive midfielder. Worth the money, but not a player we need if you ask me. Future JWP replacement?

I wonder if this puts us out of the running for the City kid, Lavia?

I actually reckon he’s the one we want and the Swede is back up.

Same with the Dragon keeper.

Is it possible that JWP would be better suited to being one of the 2 between midfield and strikers in a 4 2 2 2 thus meaning this player Svanverg (and diallo as next option) will play in the midfield 2 with Romeu?

I still think we need another Romeu type but perhaps JWP playing slightly more forward would work well, and allow him to get in more forward positions more often.

Thought we'd signed him but crook saying zero chance is the same

What we ‘need’ is a change of formation and rapid. We are always outnumbered in midfield and Ralph seems blind to it…

When you say 'outnumbered in midfield', do you mean centrally? Because 4222 has lots of players in central positions.

I think 3-4-3 is the perfect formation for us. Extra cover at the back to make allowances for CBs missing their high press interceptions, allows the fullbacks to get further forward (our biggest threat on the wings), and gets an extra player up front to initiate the press and put the back line under pressure.

As for the CM issue, that's also helped out with the extra CB stepping up into midfield.

In the middle of the park is up and down, as well as side to side.

Not the way we play, it leaves 2 central in midfield out of possession and time and time again leaves it far too easy for the opposition to get behind them and at our centre backs

We could have solved that problem by appointing a new manager.

We're crying out for a 3 man midfield as we currently have Diallo, JWP and Armstrong (S) who would all really suit it.  We have no #10s or strikers that particularly suit the box front 4.  If we sign another advanced CM type then it would be bizarre to carry on with the 4-2-2-2.

There's also a chance that some of our ineffective attackers might come to life in a front three.

Turns out it is the way we play judging by last season! 😂😜

In Ralphs system being outnumbered in the 6 position is a consequence of a failure elsewhere - either from looking after the ball in forward positions or the press failing (in terms of the trigger from the forward players and those behind them consequently doing their jobs).  The risk of both those things failing is for us to be horrendously outnumbered.

Last season our 10's were horrendous in possession which caused us big issues, and we also ended up in a situation where our worst pressing forward was also the only player who looked like scoring for us.  That's a tough position for Ralph to be in.

Where I do think we need help in the 6 position is to be press resistant ourselves.  Neither Romeu or JWP are ball carriers, but you need to be able to do a bit of that now in midfield otherwise teams can shut you down easily with pressing.

I'm not excusing either Ralph's inability to see issues and address them quickly, but putting more people in midfield to stop us being over-run is conceding ground and aggressiveness and that's not what Ralph wants to do.  If we got the right 10's in, and got the right striker in to help press (Che and Armstrong are good at it but unfortunately too inconsistent when presented with chances) then it would automatically help those in the 6 position massively.

He wants Prem football and doesn't want to be at Bologna. Shouldn't be too hard to get this deal over the line.

There are tools you can use that show you real time Twitter feeds. eg, set up a feed on the hastag #saintsfc and it shows all the tweets with that hashtag in real time. Tweetdeck is one such tool

Maybe I'm a bit behind the times but I always used to think the clubs agreed to fee / sell on clauses etc before the club get permission to discuss salary / contracts with the player.  I guess with the way agents are now that's all gone out the window !

I think you're right in how it used to be, but I'm not sure this is such a recent change. I recall an interview with Lawrie when he was DoF saying clubs couldn't speak to players, but there was nothing to stop them from speaking with their agents.

It does seem that buying clubs and agents though are now more blatant in their actions, without giving a monkeys about any standards.

I guess part of it may be that the agents clubs speak to may already have players at the buying club. In which case it would be really hard to regulate. I'm sure when clubs are speaking about their own players with those agents, such as when contract extensions are being discussed, it becomes very easy for either party to divert onto discussions about other players.

Seems to like to move forward early, different passes and appears to keep opponents guessing. Scores goals. Looks more like a JWP replacement than Oriol or others. Looks decent though.

Anders Svensson based on his performances for Saints was pretty average I thought. Some good moments but always had more in him than what he showed.

Good enough to knock Argentina out of the World Cup. I'm sure Svanberg would be happy to match that.

Also remember Anders' part in the demolition of Hoddle's spurs in the 3rd round FA Cup tie. No too shabby.

Would agree though that AS did seem a bit lightweight on occasion.

He had a good spell around 2003 but apart from that i thought he was too soft and had far too many games simply making up the numbers.

If he's half as good as Anders then we're going to be more than happy with him!

This type of player seems to ahve been thrown up by our scouting too often.

Hopefully the 'Blackbox' with the Rasmus update will prove better.

Tbf, Strachan was all about "useful" players rather than players with a broad range of skill.  Shows that Telfer, Delap, Tessem etc. all did better than Svensson despite being far less talented.  Not that I'm complaining.

Anders goal in second match,  good chance to reminisce.

Some great players on show there, Niemi, Beattie, Delap 😀

Couple of nice passes from the much maligned Fernandes in there too.

the commentary " forty games without a goal.." is more telling than the gaoil as good as it was. Sahme it didn't happen for him more often, he had the talent.

Not a midfielder, but can’t let this Swedish talk go without mentioning Alexander Östlund ❤️.

(who, upon googling him, I’ve found out is now called Alex Mezan).
