Gonna be some six pointers at the end of the season!!

You can foresee Forest, Fulham and Brighton battling for European qualification alongside us....? Seems a tad far fetched to me.... ;)

A slow start to the season on paper, but the window is not yet done. The 3 newly promoted teams in the last two months could be useful if we have our usual 2nd half season collapse.

But of course is reality, none of us can predict what will happen….especially with this ridiculous World Cup halfway through the season.

Tough first month so I do expect another winless start, but Dec > March is quite kind and is an opportunity for us to do our usual 'mid season' burst and get what we need.

We avoid the promoted teams at the start which is a bonus. But unless we add quality to the first team then it's all academic really!

Of note... tough first game, tough first month, our run after the World Cup (post Christmas) looks decent, and the run in looks OK bar the last game which hopefully won't be relevant by then. Could be worse could be better.

No easy fixtures. We need to be beating the likes of Fulham, Forest, Bournemouth, Palace, Wolves, Brentford, Leeds, Everton who will all be direct competition if we want to stay up as well as getting our usual few points against the big boys. Still I think it will be a long season. We need attacking recruits and we need them fast.

I personally think that we will win some, we will lose some, we will draw some. We will win some that we are expected to lose and we will lose some we expected to win - pretty much a normal season.

Not forgetting the "we're doomed" posts from the usual suspects around November... :)

The run of Bournemouth, Newcastle, Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Brighton at the end is favourable. I guess you could even hope Arsenal have one of their off days and Palace prior to include those in the run. You’d just hope whatever we’re playing for doesn’t go down to the last game, and if it does then Liverpool need to be on their metaphorical beach, resting players before a Champions League final.

BBC article states that: There are no meetings between the Premier League's so-called 'big six' on weekend of 12-13 November - the one before the World Cup - following a request by the Football Association.

We have liverpool the game before the World Cup, not quite sure why the FA would request this, or why it makes any sense. Half the England Squad will be on the benches for the big six anyway, so might be nice for them to all be playing each other so they can bond while warming up all game.

Think it just goes to show that the Premier League doesn't give a fuck about the other clubs outside the top six.

So, if Hasenhuttl's being given the first 9 games (think that was the rumour) to prove his worth, that'll be a caretaker in for City away, and a new manager starting at home against West Ham.

“That was really hard to swallow ... Lukaku was so important for us, not just because of his goals. If things were not going well in a game, if we could not play the way we were used to, there was always the option to use the long ball towards him.”

Everton faced Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur in their opening nine league games and Koeman, who spent heavily in the summer to overhaul the squad, said he knew it would be tough going when the fixture list came out.

“I looked at it and saw that five of our first nine games would be against clubs from last season’s top six...,” Koeman added.

“I said to myself, ‘Phew! That is not going to be an easy run, in particular with a Europa League run at the same time’. And, most of all, because I had lost my striker Lukaku.”

^^^Koeman's words after he got sacked by Everton... I'd say based on those fixtures our fans could be restless after the Wolves game if it goes pear shaped

Given the unusual nature of the season, the obvious time to make a change if needed would be after 16 games. New manager beds in during the World Cup. Very few of our players likely to be part of the QFs onwards (JWP maybe, who else?). 22 game season starts on Boxing Day.

I think I worked out last year that's it's two Premier League wins in 23 seasons (spanning 30 years):

> Coventry away in 1999 (1-0)

> West Brom away in 2013 (1-0)

That's absolutely dreadful by anyone's standards.  If you pro-rated that win rate (9%) over a season then we'd secure 10 points!

Edit: Just checked our Championship / League 1 record and it was just one win seven seasons, Leeds home in 2011 (3-1).

Not really, it's just one game in isolation.

Yes, of course, but it begs the question why has the first game of the season been such a problem for us over such a long period of time.

I'm fascinated to understand this better!

In all the many years I've been going we often have started badly, I remember a win at home to West Ham 1988 I think, but generally we're slow starters despite changing managers, players, stadiums, some things don't change

The longer this goes on the more you wonder whether that highlighted bit of text has become engrained in the club.  Do we now go into games knowing about this terrible record and thinking "we're going to lose, but that's ok as that's what we always do".  Unlikely, but as good an explanation as any I guess!

Five games in August means the pressure will build very quickly if results are poor and you have to say that already for Ralph the Leeds game looks huge.  While in reality everyone plays everyone twice, momentum is crucial and after a shocking end to the season (was it five points from twelve games?) I could easily see this becoming six points from 17 games which would just be incredible.
