Next it will be roll on roll off subs and specialist players employed just to lump kick ins into the opposition box from their own half.

At least that will firmly put to bed the Salisu throw-in nonsense.

Trading Salisu's throws for JWP's kicks may be the best upgrade in professional sports history.

The moment you get to out-MLG the man himself and remind him that it would be a change to the laws of association football rather than the rules....... 😁

As for the mooted law change itself I'm really not a fan if I'm honest; throw ins have worked just fine since the 1880s so why change it now?

Since 1863 :)

Kick-ins were allowed beforehand. So if anything... that makes them more traditional!

Didn't they trial this in the Wessex League a while back and bin it off as a bit of a crap idea?

I remember watching a game or two at Bognor in the 90s where they tried it for a season. Bloody pointless, slowed down the play and you could see the poor player's having a panic attack while struggling with the decision to 'kick or throw'.

Silly idea, personally think it would slow the game down more as players try to get into position akin to a corner.

Also if I was a defender I’d actively try to give a corner away than for a “kick-in”.

Having said that, I’m willing to bet this idea won’t come to fruition and will remain as that - just an idea.

Think they're looking at it with a time restriction, for example a maximum of 5 seconds allowed to take the kick-in. The amount of time lost in the game to throw ins is a farce. Good that they're trying to fix that. Let's see if time restricted kick-ins do the trick. Time restricted throw ins could work also though.

The same goes for throw-ins.

Why don't they change it so that you have to throw the ball backwards over your head?

Just enforce a time limit like they did with keepers holding the ball (is it still even a law as I haven't seen it enforced for ages?) and start carding people if they take the piss.

Are we going to get through one season without them pissing around with the rules? IFAB just trying to justify their existence.

Was it last season where they changed the handball rule during the season? No idea how they can be allowed to do that.

I would think this would slow down play as lots of attacking throw ins could be treated as a corner.

That would allow broadcasters to squeeze in adverts. Maybe interview players as they are subbed.

Just stop fucking around with the game

Why? Change is part of life. There's no harm in trying it and if it doesn't work, they can go back.

Change is not inevitable. Why break it if it ain’t broke?

Because it can quite easily be changed back again if it doesn't work. There's no harm in trailing it it.

Some people won’t be happy until they’ve buggered about with it for the sake of it.

Anyone else remember the tweaking of the offside rule in the 1970’s ? I think it was in the Watneys Cup, or early Texaco Cup. The 18 yard line on the penalty area was extended the full width of the pitch and the player could only be offside on the goalside of this line. In other words couldn’t be offside for about two-thirds of the opposition half.

No idea the impact, other than it was rapidly discontinued.

It's a stupid idea.  Would have hoped that Arsene Wenger would have known better.  When it was trialled it slowed the game down.  Had to wait for players to get into the opposition box before lumping the ball forward.

They are just flying a kite.  Can't see it happening

Would change the game very significantly. Rather like Rugby League is in relation to Union regarding scrums. Fine, do it....but bugger off and call it something different and play it in weird towns in the north.

But why not? Change is part of life.

Change just for the sake of it is not good. The sport of football is loved and played world wide using the current set of laws which have taken well over a hundred years to adjust and perfect.

Any changes can be trialed in some minor league before being rejected.  As has this one.

Change for the sake of change is far better than not trying anything new out of fear it may not be as good.

An interesting read including another link to YouTube showing a match played as part of the trial, at non league level, in the 1990’s

Something I noticed was how a fullback was happy to simply watch the ball trickle out of play for a ‘kick in’. Under the current system the tendency would be to get his head down and bomb up the wing or look to play it forward quickly.

The rule change I would like to see is the ball has to be dead still before a free kick can be taken. It's annoying when the ball is hardly moving and the kick is taken quickly, and the ref stops the game, pulls the play back for the geezer to play the same ball again. Pointless.

Totally disagree. Were it not for the fear, the guys running the shit show would have Cola-Soccer looking like an LED strobe light NFL advert already.

Screw those guys in suits making this shit up. The bastardising of the game needs to stop.
