CamberwellSaint Posted 4 June, 2022 Posted 4 June, 2022 Evening all. I'm starting this thread mostly as I'm keen to know when Saints' final home friendlies are going to be [nothing on the OS at the mo as far as I can see] Tho also as I'm wondering whether we'll repeat our recent pattern of beating e.g. Austrian second tier Oppo handsomely, then come obviously unstuck against someone half decent from Italy at SMS just before the seats starts.
JRM Posted 5 June, 2022 Posted 5 June, 2022 We usually play someone at home the week before the season starts, often Spanish or German. Might be a bit different this year with the season starting early and the fact St Mary's is being used for the women's Euros group stage so they might need more time preparing the pitch.

I think you can pretty much bet your house that we will play a home game versus a middling-but-recognisable European team over the weekend before the first match - just one week earlier than normal, so 31st July time. The rest of it will be harder to predict, we don't seem to have anything planned as yet that relates to our new ownership (no tour of Serbia etc).
for_heaven's_Saint Posted 5 June, 2022 Posted 5 June, 2022 Guessing we might have another game away in Europe on the weekend of the 23rd/24th July? Here is a list of other teams’ confirmed fixtures so far. A few clubs going to either America or Australia for ‘tournaments’. https://www.premierleague.com/news/2554997
suewhistle Posted 6 June, 2022 Posted 6 June, 2022 Usually we find out the details from the opposition website or local sports rag, so keep your eyes open, foreign based fans!

Doubt there will be as the present leader of the of the country has our Dragan marked as a bit of an enemy of the state.
FboroSaint21 Posted 6 June, 2022 Posted 6 June, 2022 If they could play a nice away game against Malmo that would be very handy - couple a work trip with football!
FarehamSaintJames Posted 6 June, 2022 Posted 6 June, 2022 Surprised to see football matches going on at the MCG in Melbourne when you’ve also got AAMI Park and the Etihad Stadium within a mile of the sports district of the city.
Bad Wolf Posted 7 June, 2022 Posted 7 June, 2022 We've played Swansea the last three years I think. Mind you I guess Covid and therefore travel restrictions probably played a part in that.

Think Liverpool played Melbourne in a friendly at the MCG and got 99k in attendance, whilst City v Real Madrid got similar I think. Etihad and AAMI don't come close to holding that many. Think Utd and Ronaldo will pull in a similar figure.

I far prefer playing tougher opposition than being lulled into a false sense of security by beating some obscure team 8-0 or something. La Liga starts on 12 August, so in theory we should be closer to being prepared for the season more so than Villareal. 1

Damn, what are going to use as our excuse when we lose now? Usually we at least have the ‘they’re further into their preseason’ line.

Villarreal are playing us at St Mary's on the Saturday and Fulham at Craven Cottage on the Sunday, no doubt they have a very good squad as Champions league semi finalists but depends which side they put out against us. We're also playing Watford at Wealdstone's ground , bit of a random one playing at a non-league ground but story does indicate crowds will be allowed so hopefully we'll get an allocation https://www.southamptonfc.com/news/2022-06-24/pre-season-friendly-announcement-watford-southampton-23-july-2022
