Oh he did better than that. Here's an account of Eddie Howe's career that the media want you to believe...

He took over Bournemouth when they were bottom of the 9th tier, won promotion each year until they got to The Championship, spent a year there to be nice, came up to the PL, finished 6th in their first season and won the league the next year, then they won the double, then the quadruple and became the dominant force in world football on a budget of frozen peas and safety pins. There's a nasty source that claims he went to Burnley but that's just something they put in the water to cause hallucinations, that never happened.

After 15 glorious years, Howe left Bournemouth at the end of his contract having not tasted defeat for four years and all with homegrown players.

He then went to Newcastle who were bottom of the league on -20 points. Howe came in and immediately changed everything without spending a single penny. He got them to 4th place where they finished this season. He's since developed the cure for cancer as well as solved world hunger.

He took over RB Leipzig in their first season in the Bundesliga and they finished 2nd. He had some money for sure, but you have to be a decent coach to do that.

Yes, but didn't he do that with Rohl? It seems Ralph without Rohl is like Laurel without Hardy.

That’s a bit harsh on Stan, he wouldn’t have set up like we did at Anfield.

Except we’ve been through four different ‘generals’ since 2016 and they’ve been commanding a steadily declining group of foot soldiers, lead by the same group of NCOs. Simply chopping the highest ranking official you can find isn’t necessarily the solution to everything.

A couple of names to watch out for that would surely suit in the eyes of the SWF traditionalists:

Former Brighton manager and current Dagenham assistant Steve Gritt.

A left-field one but easy to see what Kevin Steele, defensive coach of the University of Miami would bring.

Never heard of him, but he does sound like he has a good pedigree behind him. I'd be confident to say that he's been appointed with a long-term view to be our manager some day, similar to Thomas Frank becoming Dean Smith's assistant at Brentford.

Although something tells me we've sold the wrong club to him?

On the face of it, seems like a good appointment.

Hopefully he'll bring some fresh ideas to the group. Maybe he'll turn Redmond into Mane finally, or Long into a goalscorer

Slightly different approach by us on this one as well - we've appointed a coach who was currently employed by a club! That would have required compensation and we always seemed to avoid paying that...so it's an interesting change of approach.

I've supported Saints since 2004 and in all that time, I'm pretty sure Nigel Adkins was the only manager we've ever poached from another club.

That's because for a lot of that time Super Les had a secret list of managers which he'd been tracking for years who were the perfect fit for us when the existing one left, the fact they were all unemployed at the time is a total coincidence.

Don't know anything about this guy, but based on his CV he's got too much about him to be Ralph's assistant for more than a season.  So I'd wager some decent money there's a longer term plan involved.  Either replacing Ralph or managing another club in our pyramid?

Either way it looks like a good appointment (on paper at least).

Fresh ideas, experience, working with a winning side. The changes to the backroom staff are what will probably make me more excited for next season than a bunch of £10million youngster signings.
