Fuck me, give it a rest!

I am a relatively new and infrequent poster on here. I had hoped that this would be a board on which one could share the highs and lows of being a Saints supporter; instead it is dominated by 3 or 4 posters, arguing constantly about insignificant shite, be it statistics or a player's "ceiling".

Any chance we could get back to the football?

Welcome to football forums. Sadly it is the same everywhere. Normal, decent posters are drowned out by attention seeking WUMs and trolls.

You should have been on here a few years ago, it was brilliant. Thread after thread of off the scale discussion, sharing great stories, highs and lows, etc. then it went downhill, a lot of the good posters from that time don’t bother any more and you can see why!

The second poster on here says all forums are the same, yet posts furiously on many of them, maybe he is the common denominator?

as for me I’m the forums fine whiskey. Not everyone gets me or likes me but those that do think I’m marvellous. And even those that don’t still like to have a little taste now and again.

I would say my best advisory @Turkishwas once (when the banter was fun) the owner of the biggest stick in the puddle stirring away (he even had a posse) , once upon a time if you had a slap button on the keyboard, if you met the poor chap he would look like he had fallen face first into an open Bee hive.

But life has clicked on, the the world of face down in a device has evolved into a world where context has become old fashioned. You write something on here with your tongue wedged so far in your cheek, that with a fleeting glimpse from a casual observer they would immediately think that you were performing sexual gratification, AND had back it up with an emoji emphasising that you are very much posting in jest, many will smile and move on. Sadly there is a band of newer blood posters who have had context subconsciously removed via IOS or Android, who will ignore the context emoji clue, and pretty much paint “Knob” on their forehead and attack the comments made in jest.
There are 2 threads currently rightly high on the board, peppered with random comments from posters safely hidden behind their keyboards, where they truly believe they are posting on behalf of the masses, yet it’s clearly evident that they are typing with one or two fingers, because their other hand is developing cramp whilst piling through a pallet full of Kleenex tissues alongside them. In reality in the context of the threads they truly make themselves look like prize Cockwombles.

You just have to switch on your bullshit filter and decide, do I engage, or, do I just think “bell end” and ignore. Or just post a slap backed up with hard evidence for shits and giggles because that flummoxes most of the keyboard warriors.

If we supported a team that did not dish up football performances that spin round like a Church spire weather vane in a Tornado, things might be a bit more chipper on here.

😁

It does seem like that at times, the moderators could do more in my opinion, they could shut down the 2 or 3 posters for a cooling off period when they become tedious (possibly driving more rational and less confident posters away), like you say, it’s 2 or 3 that spoil it by their relentless dick swinging and “dog with a bone” attitude.

I would also like to see all politics, wokery and current non football, or tenuously related to football “political” issues shut down or moved to one of the other discussion forums.

As for Turkish, I think he adds colour to the forum and is very funny at times. I don’t know him, but I guess we are similar ages which is why I probably get him, we come from a period where we didn’t take ourselves too seriously, we now have a fearful and paranoid social media/ x box generation moving in and dominating proceedings.

These off topic discussions are fine, even when they get heated. What I find strange, is the people who post, who cannot accept there may well be an opposite point of view. And to even suggest that there is, seems to inspire over the top name calling rebuttals.

When did that become a way to win an argument?

The Broja 'argument' shows me that if anyone wants to get a word in edgeways, it's either a direct in & out and not invite a response, or get dragged into the nauseating exchange. The alternative is not to bother. That it's dragged on and become so repetitive and tedious makes me feel that quieter posters won't bother with the thread, and probably the forum as a whole. It needs moderating for the good of the forum imo.

I don't think its correct to say all forums are the same. I can think of a pretty good example of one that was thriving until the rabid politics of a powerful minority set in. They literally eliminated anyone with a different point of view over a few months. And now its just the same five or six posters keeping the place limping on.

Amen to that. I imagine some people check into threads, think sod that, and log off. I'm guilty of more than my share of tussling, and if I feel that way, I can only imagine that quieter posters may have reached the point of no longer bothering to get that far.

Without wishing to blame the mods, I can’t help but feel stricter moderation of these people (i.e. temporary bans) would help matters, albeit given these are paying members we’re talking about I guess there would be extreme reluctance to do this.

in this forums favour the ignore function works very well!

Assume you’re talking about TUI, which used to be hilarious a few years ago, some of the threads would have me in stitches. But that got ruined by all the political stuff and one lunatic who seemed determined to get the site shut down.

going way back Essruus b-anter forum was brilliant as well, can only imagine what some of the wet lettuces that post on here would have made of it. Grizzle gutting into their rainbow laces and herbal teas (no milk) no doubt.

It quite sad that I’ve been posting on This place regularly it is various guises  for 20 odd years now though and has always gone through cycles. It was much like the TUI used to be in its early days, then it got overtaken by a load of helmets who it appeared only discovered football when we moved to st Mary’s with the seating plans, what name are you getting on your shirt this season? Geeky stuff. The ITK era of the late 00s was blinding, with the power struggle between fans and fan groups. Amygate, St Romsey saints feud with delldays, franks cousins drunken rants, the Spanish loon who banged on about Javi De Pedro endlessly, Gulys 15 minute contract clause, some funny stuff over the years.  still a few good posters but a lot who take themselves very seriously and just want to quote stats or show how virtuous they are. Sadly that is also a reflection of how football has gone, but I definitely think this forum is home to some of the weirdest, geeky, self righteous helmets I’ve ever come across.

I take it you don’t remember the days of infraction points for pointless posts. 95% of the posts on here would qualify for that these days

I'm not sure banning is the way. Have a word, shut threads, delete posts, but banning feels ott to me. Threads like this are a form of member moderation which helps as it gets the point across and focuses minds. Fair play @SaveloyMush 👍

Every forum I have ever read has been spoiled by WUMs and trolls eventually. That included a mental health support group that started out brilliantly until a few members turned on another and then it was all downhill. All of the Saints football forums I have read over the years have been spoiled by a few posters who are just there on the wind up. Not surprisingly, when these characters are removed, the forums improve. I agree with the view that transgressors should be sanctioned. I don’t think a rest period will deter the everyday WUM but limiting the number of posts each day for some might prevent the way some threads deteriorate. In the Lounge it says abuse is not tolerate but the verbal abuse towards one poster recently went way too far and amounted to bullying. Would you call a complete stranger in a pub a cunt to his face if he disagreed with you? Having been on the receiving end of a few pile ins over the years I can testify that it isn’t very pleasant. I haven’t paid my fiver because, for a fee, I expect better moderation of the board. Unfortunately the ignore function doesn’t work particularly well. You still get to see a person’s post if someone else quotes it and they are on your ignore list. I have sympathy for the mods as I know it must be difficult to keep an eye on every thread all of the time, but this forum gets ruined by the amount of personal abuse that gets thrown around and something needs to be done. It doesn’t help that previously banned members just rejoin under a different name. If you are going to charge for a forum then you need to provide a better service than all of the other free forums. In an ideal world people would self moderate and walk away from a thread when it started to get unpleasant. Unfortunately we don’t live in an ideal world and the people who just follow others round deliberately looking for a wind up need to be dealt with.

There was some cracking stuff back them, and some sheer crazy stuff. All that stuff you mentioned, tubgirl or what ever it was, brilliant. As much as I like a bit of the political stuff in the lounge, there should be no place for it on the main forum imo - personally I'd shut down anything like that, plus threads like the Broja one which has run its course.

I won't respond to all, but in the real world, yep, I'd tell someone what I think of them. In here people are anonymous to a point, but to refer to people as strangers who some of us have interacted with for years is a stretch. In real or virtual life, idiots will get called out. The idiots have to suck it up, although I doubt in real life they'd behave that way and save their goading and nonsense for the safety of the virtual world.

It also doesn’t work very well when you supposedly take people off ignore to reply to them, even though you couldn’t have seen the post if they were on ignore, which is a weird thing to do.

One of the funniest things I ever seen anywhere was when Keith Legg was being courted by Micheal Wilde to get the fans onside and Was invited to Sweden as his guest for a preseason trip. Someone posted a picture of someone walking a lap dog with Wilde and Keith’s faces on them, I’d love to see that again.

I think Bearsy use to collect infraction points like Green Shield stamps - almost knowing when he’d filled a book he get a few welcome days holiday through suspension. - His pre match reports were amusing.

There was also a time when huge chunks of threads were deleted when stuff got too messy and veering off course

Temp bans leading to full bans if they can’t sort themselves out for me.  Tbh why should the mods have to police some of the childish bickering on here?  Albeit like I say I get on fine by just using the ignore function

It's nice to have a good debate, which has been done on here before - but to do that you need to have both sides willing to accept other views or at least engage with the other views, there's no balance in some of the recent posts and before long it just turns into a one man attack which is uncomfortable to watch but is somewhat brought on.

I'm happy to hold my hands up when I've called out a load of bollocks, which I have many times. I mean I said Elyounoussi would add pace to our attack before he signed him.

What’s the cycle for these nostalgic threads harking for the old days?  I have read a fair few in my time. Gutted I missed the golden age of wit when you could say what you wanted and have a right laugh.

Nah, but there have been a whole history of geeky, stat nerds who post for a bit, show themselves to be clueless then disappear. tac-tic, redslo to name two who came on here posted this sort of stuff prolifically, got a few supporters then bored everyone to death before disappearing, I think someone else will go the same way
