Brighton 2-2 Saints - Match Thread

I suspect keeping Long on was slightly caused by the loss of Livramento and a forced use of a sub. I suspect it was always planned that Tella would be substituted since as we saw he is not fully match fit after his injury. Stuart may not have started as we've all seen that he hasn't been 100% recently.

Salisu will make it I reckon, but yesterday showed that there will be some blips along the way: I just wish he had a stronger CB partner to play with. Perhaps he can ask the Imam for dispensation on match days so he can eat and drink properly, as his concentration seems to be lacking at the moment.

You could be right Sue - had Tino not been hurt surely Ralph would have replaced Long earlier.  I agree about Salisu; he's going to be good - hopefully with Saints for several more seasons - would be a win/win if Bednarek moves on in the Summer.

Having been at the game and watched the full re-run; I don't think Mo and Jan really got to grips with the wider positions that Maupay and Wellbeck took up.  The gaps through our central areas were way too big and we ultimately paid the price with the own goal.  It was a decent pass in by Tossard but from that angle the pass along the floor should never have been an option.  2 horrible goals to give away.

...or you could say that whatever he said at half time worked a treat.

well, we dominated the second half, so if we are ti lambast Ralph for team talks that see leads disappear then should he not be credited when the reverse happens?

Looks like it was Tino, rather than Ralph, who inspired the players 😉

A shame it took an injury to a young kid and they couldn’t find the same desire when 3/4-0 down against Leicester, United and Chelsea in recent years. Might have saved a shit load of embarrassment….

It's a good point, one of my best mates is muslim and didn't play for our team during Ramadan as he couldn't manage it with no food or water and that was uni level football, when you look at the effort clubs go to now for conditioning checking for Hydration levels and pre match routine with nutritionist it's not surprising if he's not up to his usual levels. He's only got one week to go now.

Do all Muslims observe Ramadan? I mean if I was a lapsed one it woudl be the bit I ignored. Lots of other strict rules in Koran that imagine can’t obey. I realise this may be a dog whistle to MLG so apologies in advance

I think it should be Tella and one of Armstrong/Elyounoussi for the rest of the season. I think he sometimes is a bit of an easy target by my god was Redmond bad yesterday.

Not much to add about the game that hasn't been said already, but that has to be the worst set of home fans I've ever heard.

Without getting into a completely new debate, I must admit some confuse me. Some wear the headscarves, some don't. Some drink, some don't. Some pray, some don't.

I guess what it comes down to is how strictly they believe in the religion, and that as humans we respect everyone whatever their preference

Do all Christians go to church at Easter? Observant ones sure, but most in the UK only go to church for funerals & weddings.

It is permissible to eat and drink between dawn and dusk when you are travelling but you are supposed to do make up days later to compensate.  Certainly, for away games at least, players don't have to observe the fast but, of course they realize they are being watched by millions of people on TV.

The vast majority of muslims - I'd say >90% -  try to observe the fast throughout the month of Ramadan, to varying degrees. In some places you can be arrested by the religious police if you are seen eating or drinking in public. Ironically, some muslims gain weight during Ramadan because of all the extra food, especially unhealthy sweets, eaten during the hours of darkness.

It’s basically just an another method of intermittent fasting the health benefits of which are many. Many top athletes do this, here 4 times fittest man on earth talks about how intermittent fasting has transformed his training. https://www.menshealth.com/uk/fitness/a31111699/rich-froning-crossfit-intermittent-fasting/
I really don’t see how Ramadan can be used as a reason for drop in performance, If anything performance should be enhanced

Really? No water or food from dawn to dusk. And the further north you go the longer the daylight lasts. Rich Froning doesn’t say anything about not taking in fluids.

Why oh why do we find it so difficult to keep the ball out of our own net? Two or three major cock-ups in every match seems guaranteed.

People seem to be on Bednarek's case every week but Salisu seriously worries me, when he drops one it is always a big time screw up leading to goals. Yesterday's hapless lunge about sums him up. He seems very hot headed under pressure and prone to panic. Not sure he is learning very quickly and is certainly not the rock on which a strong defence can be built..

I will be glad to see the back of this season and hopefully some of these players.

The big difference between Salisu and Bednarek is we have seen a sustained period of CB excellence from Salisu, which given his age and inexperience gives you confidence and belief in his game longer term.   With Bednarek it's been a sustained (longer period) of ok games jumbled up with poor ones - he's older and looks to have a ceiling which isn't really good enough if the Club wants to raise its ambition to comfortable mid-table status.

We could sign 10 super stars, around Bednarek, and get to mid table status that way. Well, 9 because JWP. 🙂

A great comeback from us to get a point. Prowsey was just immense, a true captains performance and two great goals including the free kick :) Tino's unfortunate injury (praying its not too bad) rallied us and we got a share of the spoils - COYR :)

Apologies if this has been mentioned elsewhere.

For what seems like ages, everyone (commentators in particular) rattles on about how many points we have lost from winning positions. I haven't studied it in depth, and I may be wrong, but it feels like we have picked up quite a few points from losing positions this season, which may show a slightly stronger mentality than previously. No doubt someone on here will know the stats on that.
