I went to school (about 10 miles from home) in the very severe winter of 1963 and cant remember having a day off> I do remember having free milk at school and the milk being frozen in the bottles with birds pecking through the top to get at the milk. And we didnt have central heating in our house, we used a paraffin stove which didnt chuck out much head and used to smell!! My parents didnt have a washing machine or any other modern benefits. Our 14" Sobell B & W telly was rented from Radio Rentals and went off air at 11.00hrs when viewers were expected to stand for playing of the National Anthem!!! Oh and our football boots had nailed in studs which occasionally went through the soles causing lacerations to the soles of our feet. 1

saint1977 Posted 18 February, 2022 Posted 18 February, 2022 O2 arena severely damaged in London. Southampton seems to have escaped so far but here in Devon it is doing a lot of damage and bins flying down the street, ceramic pots, anything not tied down. Weekend will be spent repairing our garden. Work in Midlands and Hurricane Dudley brought down a lot of big trees and was dangerous to travel in on Weds, bringing some very intense and cold rain. The M42 was not fun in 70mph winds. Very sad to see the church in Wells spire blown off. 122mph wind speeds clocked on the IOW. Hopefully it eases up a bit this afternoon!

Plastic Posted 18 February, 2022 Posted 18 February, 2022 neighbours lost some tiles, just saw a big birch tree come down behind them. Seems to be calming down a bit now. Don't think we have any damage, fingers crossed.

Started school in 62 and definitely had closures at the beginning of the 63 snow. Mainly because it was village school and teachers could not get there and we had kids bussed in who also could not get there. My secondary school also closed a couple of times due to inaccessibility caused by the weather. 1

In the middle term we didn’t play any football at all and there were piles of ice on the pavements and by the road. We lived near Harwich and large areas of the sea froze. It was a bit different when we moved to Enfield and our temporary classrooms were so cold that the ink froze in the inkwells.
Weston Super Saint Posted 18 February, 2022 Posted 18 February, 2022 Two fence panels down now. It's always so tough to pop them back into the concrete fence posts once the wind dies down
Whitey Grandad Posted 18 February, 2022 Posted 18 February, 2022 I’ve got one fence post that’s come loose but luckily the shed has stopped it going to far. I thought the posts would have been secure but this one has broken its concrete spur. Just snapped it clean through.

I can remember one day off due to snow at junior school in about 1960. During the big freeze of 62-63 I was at grammar school and had to take a train and a bus to get there but never missed a day (and the trains kept running). 1

When I started KES football was banned, not even allowed on the playground. Rugby and cross country in the autumn term, hockey in the middle term, cricket and atheltics in summer. 1

trousers Posted 19 February, 2022 Author Posted 19 February, 2022 We've got some twigs in the front garden. Beat that.
badgerx16 Posted 19 February, 2022 Posted 19 February, 2022 3 fence posts broken to join the one that went in January, currently they have been righted and tied to trees, and one to a scrap motor bike, to keep them upright for now. Another storm blowing in tomorrow afternoon and runnjng through to Monday morning.

Sheaf Saint Posted 20 February, 2022 Posted 20 February, 2022 We've taken another battering here in Sheffield. Been raining incessantly since the early hours and all the rivers in the city have burst their banks at various points. A slight respite at the moment but more heavy rain forecast overnight. Been bad in Leeds and Manchester as well so I gather.
