Depends what kids do instead of school.

Tru dat.

Neither my wife nor

I can ever remember our schools being closed on account of the weather. Can I ask any other members who grew up in the fifties and sixties if their experience is the same?

And yes, I know that it’s a different world today but none of us ever got taken to school by car.

I went to school (about 10 miles from home) in the very severe winter of 1963 and cant remember having a day off>

I do remember having free milk at school and the milk being frozen in the bottles with birds pecking through the top to get at the milk.

And we didnt have central heating in our house, we used a paraffin stove which didnt chuck out much head and used to smell!!

My parents didnt have a washing machine or any other modern benefits.

Our 14" Sobell B & W telly was rented from Radio Rentals and went off air at 11.00hrs when viewers were expected to stand for playing of the National Anthem!!!

Oh and our football boots had nailed in studs which occasionally went through the soles causing lacerations to the soles of our feet.

O2 arena severely damaged in London. Southampton seems to have escaped so far but here in Devon it is doing a lot of damage and bins flying down the street, ceramic pots, anything not tied down. Weekend will be spent repairing our garden. Work in Midlands and Hurricane Dudley brought down a lot of big trees and was dangerous to travel in on Weds, bringing some very intense and cold rain. The M42 was not fun in 70mph winds. Very sad to see the church in Wells spire blown off. 122mph wind speeds clocked on the IOW. Hopefully it eases up a bit this afternoon!

Started school in 62 and definitely had closures at the beginning of the 63 snow.  Mainly because it was village school and teachers could not get there and we had kids bussed in who also could not get there.  My secondary school also closed a couple of times due to inaccessibility caused by the weather.

I remember the winter of ‘63. At my school we played hockey, football and cricket in the three terms. In the middle term we didn’t play any football at all and there were piles of ice on the pavements and by the road. We lived near Harwich and large areas of the sea froze.

It was a bit different when we moved to Enfield and our temporary classrooms were so cold that the ink froze in the inkwells.

I can remember one day off due to snow at junior school in about 1960.

During the big freeze of 62-63 I was at grammar school and had to take a train and a bus to get there but never missed a day (and the trains kept running).

I expect the feathers on your quill went all stiff too?

Seems to have died down here now, thankfully without too much damage.

So did we.
Football up until Xmas, Hockey until Easter then cricket.
However we all wanted to concentrate on football.
What school did you go to?

When I started KES football was banned, not even allowed on the playground. Rugby and cross country in the autumn term, hockey in the middle term, cricket and atheltics in summer.

Peasants. I'd stop paying my council tax in protest if I were you. That'll teach them.

We've taken another battering here in Sheffield. Been raining incessantly since the early hours and all the rivers in the city have burst their banks at various points. A slight respite at the moment but more heavy rain forecast overnight.

Been bad in Leeds and Manchester as well so I gather.
