Fulham and Bournemouth at least paid more than that to some players between them.

Are you talking about players on existing contracts they could not shift or new signings last summer? Sunderland were paying £70k a week to Rodwell in League 1, doesn't mean they'd sign a CB on £50k a week from Saints.

Championship sides don't pay circa £50k a week wages though.

The Athletic suggested he signed a four year deal in 2020. He is here until 2024.  He is going nowhere. No championship sides are buying him or even taking him on a free. We are not paying him £20k a week or more to play for someone else. Not a chance. And he will have no desire to drop down a league until he has n choice, which will be in 2024.

Whoever sanctioned that four year deal should be held accountable. He should have never had been offered four years.

Not sure if posted before. His Wikipedia page helpfully has the following:

Erik Botheim (born 10 January 2000) is a Norwegian professional who as well as playing the flute he also plays as a striker.

Maybe he could start an Irish folk band with Shane Long?

In 2016 the music video for "Kygo jo" was uploaded to YouTube by Flow Kingz, a group consisting of Botheim and his Norway U18 teammates Erik Tobias Sandberg and Erling Haaland. The video had by 2022 surpassed 8.8 million views and 275,000 likes.

Bednarek will be the one leaving, linked with Roma and Napoli. Hasn’t had a good couple of years for Saints but has clearly wanted to move on and a fresh challenge will do him good. Left footed CB, Poland regular and only 26, should get £15m. Hasn’t been the same since Ralph played him at RB when the club/Gao were too stingy to bring in cover for KWP when he was injured.

Jack is OK for cover but Lyanco was a bit of brainless purchase if they’d already given Jack 4 years in 2020 as fourth choice and not publicised it. No wonder Crocker seems to back more on academy duties.

I agree with Clarky, Benjamin Sesko would be a great signing. The kind of player we should be looking for, albeit not one of the biggest European leagues RB Salzburg’s scouting has been excellent in recent years.

Jordan Tezé is another younger player that I think would fit in well. Young, Dutch, plays for PSV, strong, quick and can play either CB or full back.

He's a righty isn't he? Either way I do think he'll be the one to go too. His game isn't perfect although he's not far off entering his peak as a footballer. We signed him as a cheap back up player and he's ended up being our number 1 CB - credit to him but we need better. Salisu is decent but needs somebody better alongside him, then we keep Lyanco, Stephens and maybe even Simeu as back ups. Hopefully someone will give us £20 million odd to fund the next CB signing - someone in the mold of Tarkowski but achievable. Chris Richards had a decent season at Hoffenheim from what I've read, and has a bit of CL experience too - seems like the sort of signing we'd make.

If Forest sign Henderson on loan I believe that would mean they cannot take Garner on loan. A player we are supposedly interested in...

Good shout. Unless they think they can buy him?  With Garner, I’m assuming it might be a long-game with him, given Utd’s lack of midfielders (until they sign more &/or EtH looks at him in pre-season).

Wonder if we're looking at someone like Benjamin Sesko?

Don't know a lot about him but this could be a stellar signing. If he can find space by coming deep from the 9 role, he could be a commanding player (potential future captain material?). As long as he doesn't get too defiant and get ideas above his station about being some kind of messiah. Could be a star worth making the trek to SMS for.

I thought that before I re-read it as 'transfer talks' which suggests player

Another club.

We're going for the record number of new club signings this summer - not bothered about players as the cunning plan to sign new clubs means we have plenty of players to choose from ;)

Just to say, I'm not ITK or anything about Sesko. I've always kept an eye on Salzburg since we bought Mane from them, their scouting has always been top notch - I'd class their scouting as consistently the best around. They've had Haaland through the door, Adeyemi, Heidera, Minamino, Sabitzer, Dayot. Now they've got Sesko and Junior (who we are interested in, funnily enough). Solet at the back is also very good, he was the replacement for Caleta-Carr who they sold (another forum fave).

I just think they're the perfect club to look at, not to sound disrespectful, but just below our level stature wise and full of players at the right age and with a good level of experience, ready to make the jump to a bigger league. But the market has changed since Mane, so we'd need to double what we paid for a similar level.

At this rate they'll buy more clubs than players.

We're going to become a similar version of Red Bull under Sports Republic aren't we.

I mean, we'd be the RBL of the group (under that comparison)... Which would mean champions league football in a few years 😜😁

Goztepe media reporting Ankersen and Gagliardi flew out to Spain for transfer talks for Southampton.

Ooh interesting - I wonder if Ruben Selles has joined and told them to get over there for a player or two that he knows...

Can't possibly be Bale.

Can it?

I still think it makes sense for a season if wages are OK - makes more sense than renewing Long's contract anyway. Mind you we'd be bang in the media spotlight if it happened.

More encouraging noises from the club:

🚨 A trio of Spanish clubs have entered the race to sign Bayern Munich defender Chris Richards, but it is Southampton & Crystal Palace who lead the way - Bayern are discussing whether to include a buyback clause if they do agree to sell #saintsfc

Pep Biel (Spanish) from Selles' old club, Copenhagen? https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/pep-biel/profil/spieler/263804

What is this blokes role in player recruitment ?

The Italian has taken on a role as head of business development with Sport Republic and will help the outfit identify new clubs across Europe that may be fit for acquisition.

Do you not think Cabellero is pretty much a `sure thing', thus we sign one `new' younger keeper, like Bazanu or suchlike, to give us balance in terms of ages and career progression?

McCarthy
Bazanu
Cabellero

not exactly mystic meg, as it was only posted a week ago, but I've been saying it for a while now that we'd sign a young keeper to give balance to our ageing keeper group and provide us with at least one opportunity to make a `sell on profit'.

Looking forward to seeing him in a Saints shirt. Hope he puts the issue we have had in that position to bed for the foreseeable

Blimey. Well I was wrong about that one then. I never thought we'd sign him and loan him straight out...I assume that is the plan, seeing as the journalists were right about the move they would also be right about the detail (the loan).

What I don’t get is why we pulled out of Dragoeski due to work permit issues when he’s a full international and we’ve signed this guy who has onlY played at u21 level for the same country 🤔

sounds like BS to me

Media bullshit, not club bullshit as the club haven't said anything concerning it.

It's going to be really interesting this window to see how much the owners are prepared to shell out as I was under the impression that "breaking even" on transfers was what we did in the past, ie getting £75m for Van Dijk and £30m for Ings and then progressively getting players in.   With Bazuna up to £15m, Svanberg (if rumours are believed) £9m, a centre back will probably be a similar price to what we might get for Bednarek.  Then there is a decent striker, unless we get a loan for Delap.  Interesting times !
