Honestly, how can they justify asking for that much? He cost them £3m, they were relegated and bar a purple patch at the start of the season he has been extremely average ever since. 1 goal since Dec I think.

They'll need to half that asking price and then some to get any bites.

Because he's played in the premier league, he's a striker, long contract I'm guessing, he's scored a few and thats the market rate.  They can ask for whatever they want, but doesnt meant they'll get it.

Just like we'd probably want £25m for Adams if we sold him.

Very good player. Doubt we'll get him.

He scored 2 goals and 1 assist in the 17 games he played in this calendar year. Good job he wasn't a Saints player during that lean spell as certain fickle posters on here wouldn't be calling him a "very good player" after that run of form.... ;)

I really hope not, a couple of good goals on loan but most of the time lightweight and anonymous. Hopefully it’s an agent and Klopp pushing. At £17m you’d need to have lost your mind Les Reed-style to think that was a good purchase or be in the agent/Liverpool’s pocket and not acting in SFC’s business interests. Anyone with any football knowledge is well aware Saints need the equivalent of the next ASM at Newcastle before they get to the PL already - pace, very strong, bit raw hence the price. The squad chronically lacks power in most outfield departments, the very last thing needed is more weak, lightweight little kids blown over by the gust of wind. Some brute athletic strength please.

(Yes MLG I know the Beano is a kids comic which does not report on transfer speculation)

Lynch had this to say:

“Takumi Minamino closing in on an #LFC departure with his agent having flown to Europe to field interest from Leeds, Southampton, Wolves, Fulham and Monaco. Situation likely to be resolved quickly – Liverpool hoping to secure £17m.”

It's true, if they have the money they'll spend it. But what annoys people is that Liverpool are painted as plucky underdogs doing it the right way, not with the budget of Man City/PSG etc.

Bullshit to that. They have spent fortunes which is why they are successful, not because they're plucky underdogs.

Even Leicester spent a fair bit of money on their title winning team. Okay it's a pittance compared to what City and Liverpool spend but they still poached players from other clubs for transfer fees.

I've never actually seen anyone refer to Liverpool as plucky underdogs or similar but I can probably believe their fans think that about themselves. Liverpool fans are very strange, they need a lot of reassurance and compliments from other clubs' fans.

Re Dennis - so agent says he’s on our long list of forwards. Fans want us to sign him, when he doesn’t then fans up in rage that board lost out to X for him.

its just agent talk to drive up interest in his player!

I nothing happens by tea time i'm "virtually" ripping up my season ticket , which I have not yet un purchased, but nevertheless I think it sends out a strong signal. I would urge others, especially those who do not actively support the team, to print a ticket and rip it up and post the picture on social media.

PS. an angry scowl will add valuable gravitas.

No wonder Middlesbrough are so desperate to take him on loan before footballs best secret gets out

Talking of Middlebrough, I'm surprised nobody has snapped up Dael Fry yet. He's the sort of central defender who'd be ideal for a club like Southampton.

I think that look is typically used when you find out that you have to pay for parking at the Stadium when buying a ticket.

Retained list published for 2022 | Southampton FC

Long Willy both being offered new contracts. I worded it that way because it's the only way I can feel good about that.

Jesus wept, i cannot believe we are offering Long a new deal.

The custodian situation appears to be panning out exactly as i revealed a few days ago. Willy gets new deal, Forster goes, our Man City friend comes to fight it out with Mcarthy for the Number 1 jersey, The Polish glovesman comes in on a free and goes on loan, joining up next season to slip into Willys place.

Well at least we've finally acknowledged the new deals for Macca and Jack. Hiding it in the middle of our retained list is the epitomy of a 'low key" announcement... 😂

Didn't Ralph mentioned that McCarthy had signed a new contract in an interview or presser around February time when he was updating us about his injury? As for Stephens, yeah, as far as I can recall, this is the first official acknowledgement from the club.

What the fuck are they doing even thinking about offering Long another contract. Waste of money and a space in the squad. Insanity.

Between him and Walcott thats probably £100k a week on players that contributed zip all last season. Ridiculous.

Come on Saints, long? What are we doing FFS.

Move on from these players. They're not going to suddenly re-ivent themselves. They're done, finished. Hopeless squad fillers who take a place, money and cannot actually compete at this level. This an opportunity to have a clean slate, but we're not learning are we.

The fact that it says talks are ongoing suggests to me that we have offered him reduced terms due to his age and likelihood of playing / contributing much.

If we had offered him the same terms he would undoubtedly have accepted it already because he's not going to get offered better than that elsewhere, let's face it.

In fairness, Long pretty much single handedly knocked Swansea out the cup, which facilitated revenue-generating games against Coventry, West Ham and Man City. That alone makes his contributions vastly higher than Walcott's.

And he scored against Everton I think, plus he keeps the boys entertained with his guitar on away days

Don't have a problem with Long staying tbh. As a back up, and that is what he is, it's not the worst option in the world.

With 5 subs allowed next season, having him available to bring on late in a game to pester defenders and draw fouls to take pressure off our defence isn't the worst idea.

It was still an astonishing achievement but Vichai invested £60m in the club after they were promoted and was planning to invest £180m over three years to make them a top 5 team until they won the league ahead of schedule.

Significant outside investment that we don't have unfortunately

Certainly got a few Roger the Dodger characters in the team.

Got no problem with us offering Long a small 1 year deal. Clearly very important round the changing room, fine as a rare sub. Get rid of A Armstrong and keep Long as fourth choice striker. Bring in a new first choice striker and a younger player on loan and I'd be pretty happy with that.

Offering McCarthy and Long new contracts we must be run by a bunch of Numbskulls. *
