On the face of it a very good signing, but I think the same was said when Villa signed Buendia, Digne, Bailey and Ings last summer. Also added Coutinho mid season and finished an impressive 14th.

He'll also turn 30 next season

Big fee and a hefty four year contract for a 29 year old.

Ambition etc so fine but they achieved nothing last season and right now they feel more likely to be another Everton rather than a club on course for the Champions League.

Yes, you would hate to be a Villa fan at the moment.

Caught this on Twitter about Lis. I was hoping the plan was to buy a better keeper to improve the team not a really rubbish one to make Macca look better?

And, if he turned out to be worse than our usual entry into "worst Premier League player ever", that would be a very impressive feat.

Still, I'm sure we know what we're doing...

Have you considered that the rumour of him signing could be bullshit?

Looking forward to seeing Aston Villa become the next Everton.

Hopefully we can have a few signings ready to sign on the dotted line for June 10th. Optimistic and very unlike us, but for once it would be nice to see established, experienced players sign for us than your usual “for the future” players.

Shame. He'd have been a great signing. Proper top flight experience. Hard to see where he'd go in the prem and be a starter though. Leeds perhaps.

Standard - rumours about decent players. Then sign shit ones

There was no rumour linking Pope to Saints. An article about odds shortening is not the same thing. I also wouldn't take as gospel the article about the Polish keeper from Altay.

Glad to see the “hand picked” owners are showing their ambition and intent with aggression in the transfer market.

It would just be textbook Southampton to have a rebuild and make ourselves weaker as a result.

We are a work in progress. The problem is that we have been that for some time and we haven’t made any progress.

I’ve had/have total confidence in semmens, Crocker and co. Up until now, however, if we go into next season with McCarthy as our no1 and this noddy as our no2, then I will have lost all confidence in them.

Incredible incompetence to let Fraser go, but extend McCarthy. They either both had to go or McCarthy had to (assuming we’re not gonna sign a first choice this summer).

Obvs. He is good and costs actual money

How much would you spend on him DT?

I've no idea what our budget is (and of course sales will change things), but lets say its £40m, how much of that would you spend on a keeper?

I'd have spent what we spaffed on McCarthy's contract and given it all to Forster. Not playing your game. Depends on who it is, obviously, and all those hypotheticals you hint at

I don’t want to be one of those guys, of course this is a ‘forum’ after all and the rumours are here for us to discuss

From the outside we’ve been told that this is a #noholdsbarred summer, and every position is being looked at.. I can only hope this is the intention from the new board, although, as a ‘Saint’ over these last 5 years I find this hard to believe Ill give them a chance

Im happy to wait and see what we bring in really, because the proof really will be in the pudding here and we need signings that are going to kick us on, so Im not completely depressed at the moment

But… despite MLG telling us these are all rumours and he is possibly correct, it is ‘agent’ season after all… its hard not to become demoralised when we know the work that needs to happen this year and the most concrete rumour is a 25 yr old GK from Turkey that couldn’t catch a cold

What makes it in any way a 'concrete rumour'?

Why judge new owners based on the experience of old owners? 🤔 Judging them on their own merits is fairer. Let's wait and see what they do.

The question was, how much would you spend on Pope. If we have £40m available, would you spend £20mon him? Just asking. If you don't want to answer fine. Anyone else?

I said it is our most ‘concrete’ rumour, so in essence, the rumour that, compared to the others keeps coming back and seems to have the most legs

Its not that difficult to comprehend what Im saying unless you are frantically digging for something to fill your void in this afternoons pedantry quota

I suppose it depends on a lot of things, what our overall budget is, how much Burnley value Pope, what we want to achieve this window

But in answer to your question I wouldn’t want to spend 50% of our budget on our GK knowing we still need to fill outfield positions

Id suggest if we only have £40m to spend we’re in danger though

I don't know what our budget will be. I just picked that figure out of a hat. We've made huge losses over the last there years. There is very little money left in the bank of the loan. I am not sure there are huge funds available, but perhaps the owners add more debt to the business in the short term or we sell Salisu for £40m or suchlike. The budget then instantly changes.

Pope for £20m, with zero sell on value doesn't sound like a deal we will be doing. I might be wrong.

Ben Mee set to leave Burnley as his contract is expiring.

Would be 33 in Sept but good player and strong leader.

Would be all over it if he were 30 but considering he is recovering from a fractured leg too I doubt Saints would be in for him.

Don't think for one minute we would or should be in for Pope for £20m and definitely didn't suggest it. Salisu said he's happy. I can still foresee Spurs coming in for JWP for £50m and us relenting (even though we think that's too little). Think we should spend a significant sum on a decent keeper and centre back, maybe another defensive midfielder. PS are we skint despite the £100m we got from Prem money?

I agree… again it’s different if we have 100m or so, I still find 20m a large chunk when we probably need a significant spend at CB/ST but I suppose we’ll see

Popes likely to have suiters though, not sure what his wages are either

Every summer it’s always the same.

1) Sack the board, it’s the first week of June and the Twitter rumours aren’t ambitious enough.

2) I wish we were Villa/Everton/Norwich/Leeds/Palace/Brighton

I wish for nothing really. Born 1983, sheltered misplaced childhood and didn't know football existed til 1996.

Would be great to win a cup, finish higher than 6th, but we're Saints. I always have high hopes for the new season and always will do and then yeah but hey ho. Staying up is always good enough for me,although I do miss the League 1 days.

From League 1 2011 to Europe in 2015, not bad for a mediocre club.

Good times will come back one day, just ride the storm and enjoy.

Yep, £20m seems a lot for Pope for a club like us. Can we get a decent keeper without spending a bit though?

Wage bill is £114m. So the circa £113m we get each year simply goes on wages. £140m combined losses the last three years and a £100m debt with about £20m in the bank. So yes, we are relatively skint, but doesn't mean we won't spend and then recoup afterwards.

I suppose the flip side of that is Johnstone from WBA. No Transfer fee to just the outlay on a signing on fee and wages
