Like Ajax had no chance of getting €100m for a player untried outside of the Dutch league?!

The difference is Ajax has breaking bad levels of cash reserves after champions leagues, eredevisie and awesome transfer sales from the last 5 yrs, they can just say no and not worry about the money, so the price was more about Man U's desperation to buy rather than ajax wanting to sell.

PSV on the other hand cannot do that, they need money as they made their first loss in over a decade last year due to covid, they would of lost more but all clubs had government support.

This year that govt support is gone and they were relying on getting in the champs league proper to recover their finances, so thanks to rangers they need some cash and to return to profit they need to sell a player or 2.

Well maybe adds to the Brownhill rumour as a replacement for OR.

Can't imagine Ralph would be happy to just have 3 players in that position, but that's all he had last year mind you, so with Lavia here, perhaps its not a big an issue for him. However, Stu was seen as suitable to play there too, but not sure Ralph still feels the same now.

Wonder if they can afford to hold out until the January window or indeed next summer, or do they need to generate funds in this window? I would guess they'd want it now and there is of course a risk of the player getting injured during the season leaving them with nothing to sell in the next window(s).

Glad to see the figure we have offered of around £21m rather than up at the £30m figure. The former feels in line with the monies spent so far by SR - and thus genuine. If the reports were that we offered £35m then I am not sure I could believe it.

On another note has MLG been temporary banned to give everyone a bit of space for a week or 2 ? everyone was picking on him a fair bit so assume the adults in the room gave him some time off ?

MLG reading forum posts & not being able to reply like…

Didn’t know Guy Askham had become HoF at PSV.

Brownhill a decent player, has evolved under Kompany so far and MU pedigree from when they produced quality youngsters. Source is Football Transfer Tavern though.

Lots of ins and outs needed though in the time left - ST/10/FB and MC if Oriol goes back to Spain. Interesting 48-60 hours coming up.

I think this is the issue, he’s so quick to patronisingly question others and be pedantic. But can’t take criticism and pedantry from others, hence the pile ons, quite frankly SW has been slightly more peaceful recently. I would hope MLG returns but contributes with more opinions as opposed to constantly belittling others by questioning their opinions or fact checking.

I wouldn’t bet on it, he’s still doing the same on Twitter

I feel I can post more freely now he's not around. Before you'd have to triple check your post just in case there were mistakes, as you knew he'd jump all over them.

Back to transfer news. You'd think we'd hear about some incomings/outgoings from today, unless it's going to be a mad last couple of days of the window.

MLG can dominate the transfer thread even when he's not posting. And he's a verb (to be MLGed). That's forum royalty.

In other news I hope we do get Gakpo through the door. Would show some real intent.

Also the dutch transfer window "slams shut" on Weds night rather than Thurs night due to a error by the dutch FA who thought it was wednesday across Europe (you cant make this up).

So they really need to sort out if gakpo is leaving or not cos we can still shop on thurs and they cant replace at all.

I did see they were linked with someone (possibly a replacement) but he's gone to Antwerp instead, can't remember his name.

I really doubt United were ever in for him and have been used to create interest/a market. I wonder though if anyone else really is in for him.

PSV ain't getting £38m. Certainly not from us. However, feels like with their need for money and ours for a player, a deal can be found.

Is everyone convinced he is just what we need by the way?

I assume he is our difference maker in the final third, and the `attacker' we are looking for and a second player, a striker, is not financially viable?

Stengs from Nice - apparently it was just agent talk and he's defo at antwerp.

they are getting El Ghazi who is the maduke replacement while he is out injured and would need to replace cody

Watching his YouTube highlights for the last year now and he likes to run at players and has an eye for a forward pass.

A good thing too that PSV didn't make the Champions League, less money in the coffers.

Gakpo would very much be a marquee signing. I remember WHU signing Felipe Anderson for £36m though and he didn't really pull up any trees, though of course managed to score against us at St Mary's.

I guess I always fear if these signings don't come off, will we be hampered again like the Gao years...

Yeah, he looks awesome. Big strong boy too, which has clearly been a big thing for us this summer. We got bullied against the more physical sides last season.

his first touch looks a bit wayward at times in his highlight videos, which is a slight concern, but he has some very nice dribbling skills. He looks very positive and confident.

Very right footed, but the left doesn't see too bad at all when he uses it. He goes past people nicely in a similar way to Redmond, kind of sucks them in and nips to the right of them.

Decent finish on him and seems to get into the six yard box.

Not sure he has blistering pace, but he's tall and leggy so covers the ground pretty quickly.

I've watched another video and he comes inside a lot, which is very Redmond like, but theres a fair number of goals as a result.

There's a lot to like in the clips, just a little nervous about that first touch having never seen him live.

So basically a £30m Redmond!

I suspect they’ve taken a view on it and decided that whilst we needed a striker and a winger (redmond and Walcott out of picture and Mo not exactly the strongest in the position) the striker is less urgent with Che’s stepping up to the plate. Why not pool both transfer kitty’s and get a marquee creative player, which is why I think we are realistically entertaining Gakpo. I Still personally would prefer a target man built like a brick shithouse over Che as a focal point for attacks but any improvement in attacking positions is a good move. We never really replaced Tadic with someone as good as him (s. Armstrong when he is fit and at peak but is not nearly consistently enough) a passer who adds goals would finally address a hole in the team.

When have we ever signed a country's player of the year and football writers player of the year ? (insert keegan comment)

I think the risk in signing him for up to 30mil with his potential upside is a better deal and still cheaper than defenders like Botman, Zinchenko or Aguerd who all cost more.

I suspect any deal for Gakpo will be at a lower fee than PSV are after (reportedly €50m) but with a chunky sell-on clause. If he's expecting to come here for a season or two before moving on to one of the big boys, that would make the most sense.

As an aside, Rik Elfrink is PSV's mouthpiece journalist. Anything from him can be assumed to have come directly from PSV.

I think the reality is that to compete we will need to spend £30m on individual players from time to time. You've got Forest splurging £35m on Gibbs-White, West Ham on all sorts, Leeds spent £30m on Aaronsen (and spent £30m fees windows before that). Villa have spent big on individuals, so have Everton in a window where they are not so 'flush'.

I think SR appreciate that and we need to join the party. I'm not advocating us spending £150m on multiple big signings, but we 'should' be able to get a single £30m+ signing over the line if we are really serious about competing in this league - which I think we are.

I guess the hope is with this summer that the new signings will eventually pay for themselves and help with future windows. Due to poor ownership and poor decisions made in recent seasons, we've been left with a squad where our only saleable assets are JWP, KWP, Salisu, Adams and Livramento and selling even one of those would have done the team more harm than good with all the new players coming in.

Now, that we've got a plan again and what so far seems to be good scouting and recruitment we can hopefully join in with the £30m signings, but not get lumbered with another Carrillo.
