I wonder whether they’re thinking of moving Shane Long into a coaching role… How not to score.. Actually, that’s an area we’re already blessed in.

Haven’t posted for a while but just getting irritated at all these easy negative comments about Long. For what it’s worth I think he has been a good player for us.

I’m sure a lot of defenders do not enjoy playing against him. As a saints supporter just feel the need to say it as he does nothing but work hard for the team. He’s a better player than a lot of people give him credit for and if he’s here for another season the squad will be the better for it.

Just my opinion. Football is a team game after all and for me he adds to the team in a positive way whether on the field or i would think also the dressing room. I can understand criticism of players from our supporters  with dodgy attitudes and we have had a few of those in recent years but come on give Long a break

Saints already have a mascot, they don't need to pay Shane Long tens of thousands of pounds to be another one...

If you were friends with Crocker or Semmens you could earn £75k a week for doing nothing as footballing ability doesn’t seem to matter. Total social club, at least relegation should be a sufficient sharpener to bring the club back into the professional era so they can’t piss money away.

I'd choose a player with a terrible attitude and a great first touch over the opposite every single time.

I expect Shane is first on with the rainbow laces so brings something to the table with our champions league level virtue signalling

They’d come undone and Bednarek would trip over them to concede a goal.

TBH, if we’re offering him a contract, we might as well offer him a 12 year deal. If just running around for 10 minutes and falling over sporadically is deemed a worthy contribution to the team, he will never not be able to do that. I’ve played against Monday night fives players who were pushing 50 and avid cyclists/joggers, they could do that no problem.

Yes, god forbid we should be anything other than a team of mediocre cloggers. Hoping to occasionally be a nuisance to bigger teams, because all we have are nuisance players. But at least they give their all at the same time as giving the ball away over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over.

I'm still undecided over whether I'd rather have Lemina than Diallo, but I'd take Boufal over Elyounoussi every day of the week. If the barometer of consistency is simply knowing that a player isn't going to make anything happen, what's the point?

I am a Long fan but if we are thinking of offering him another contract it shows a lack of nous and ambition by the club.
It was a mistake to give Theo a two year deal (most fans said that at the time), and if they sign Minamino that would be another. I just don’t trust the manager’s judgement anymore. The goalkeeper situation has been mishandled and why weren’t we told about Stephens’ new contract when it was signed? From afar it looks like the club is still being run haphazardly with a manager who makes a lot of poor decisions.

I dunno, I don't really buy this argument. What's the point in keeping someone around who we know can't offer anything? If he's good around the changing room then give him a kit man role or something. I don't want to sound harsh because he's been a good servant for us, but we've dragged the life out of Long and it makes no sense having him take up a squad place when we know he cannot play at this level anymore. I'd rather have someone like Ballard or Doyle coming off the bench to impact a PL game, not Long.

Supporting the team? Support your team, whoever plays for it. Stop being such a negative ninny. Shane has been a great servant and will continue to be. A TEAM is made up of different types of players contributing in different ways. Shane’s role is obviously not to score reams of goals or he would have been gone long ago. Learn to see the bigger picture.

I’ve drawn a Venn diagram of things in your post and things Ralph is actually responsible for. The other circle is on a different forum somewhere, try mumsnet.

Manchester United are full or technically gifted players but many of them have a poor attitude and look how their season went. Yes, you need ability but teams like ours need to make up for lack of quality with a positive attitude. When we displayed those qualities we actually sat on the top of the EPL. How many comments did you read on here about players being on the beach in the final games of the season. Technical ability without a good attitude gets you Pogba.

Their fans were spitting nails with them buying Bertrand (albeit free) and Vestergaard, Brendan seems to collect Southampton players as though they are Panini stickers. It doesn't matter if they're any good or not, he just needs them to fill his album.  If he comes back for Theo, he'll have the whole set.

Spurs about to drop £20m on Djed Spence (good player - attitude has supposedly been a bit iffy in the past).

Maybe puts Middlesbrough in a position to make a permanent move for Adam Armstrong (rumoured to be sounding us out about a loan)?

I’ve heard we’re happy for Armstrong to go as long as we get a decent fee for him. If Boro offered us £12-15m I would expect him to go, and probably do a good job there.

Might be wrong, but doubt Boro could stump up that cash (even if they sell Spence).  Only teams on parachute cash could probably do it.

Transfer fee won’t be an issue if they get £20m for spence. It’ll be waves Armstrong probably for c£40k a week when he joined so won’t want to give that up and championship clubs can’t afford it. Looks like we’re stuck with another dud

its been five years since Boro spent that kind of money on a player, and when they did they fucked it with £15m Assombalonga, however that transfer was funded by selling De Roon and Rhodes, so if Spence does bring in £20m, maybe their will be funds.

Ralph seemed to have very confidence in him in the second half of the season, but he did make noises at the end of the season to suggest he would be here next season.

the only way it works is if we pay the difference in wages, say £1m a year for three years, which you could just knock off the asking price and then Boro can pay him the same wage. Not sure its as simple as all that though. Whatever happens, we ain't getting the £15m back.
