Swansea 2-3 Saints - Match Thread

Have to tip your hat to this team...in the last two games they have dug deep and found reserves of mental and physical resilience few of us believed they had. Maybe they are more than a bunch of sons-in-law. I'll confess that when Swansea scored their second I thought that would be it because we'd already given so much effort and spent so much energy. To go on and score two more goals was a supreme effort by all concerned. Long with an assist and the winner as well 🙂

Thanks for the link Convict - worked well.

Without reading threads up to this point I admit thinking WTF Ralph when he bought on Elyenoussi and Long. When we went 2-1 down I thought, how predictable...and where on earth are we going to score a goal from in this team? All credit Long for a great assist and the winning goal...

What else did we learn? Valery is not a very intelligent footballer. How stupid do you have to be to put your hands on the attacker a) when you're on a yellow and b) when he's obviously over-hit it and there's no threat? How many of us here foresaw him being sent off - and why can't Ralph see that? (In fairness, perhaps he did and realised we're out of right backs). Also Forster cannot continue to have such bad distribution or get lucky with parrying shots back to the opposition.

Anyway, happy we're into the next round.

I thought he looked good for the first 15-20 mins. But he's obviously lacking in match fitness and then had to drop deep when JWP went to RB which constrained him as an attacking threat.

Agree on the first part I thought stuey was killing them before the sending off he’s so much more creative and intelligent then our other number tens.

valery still a liability and changed what should of been a walkover into a hard slog.

he gets a lot of stick but thought long was brilliant in extra time such a pain for tired defenders got his goal and was causing loads of problems

Very professional performance from the team in difficult circumstances - and very impressed by fitness levels. We were pressing their box after playing with 10men for nearly 90min whilst they were going down with cramp. Some key players really stepped up tonight, not least JWP and Romeu, Diallo and ME also with some key contributions and a lot of threat from Perraud deep into injury time when really he ought to have been knackered by that point.

As for this thread, hilarious. Honestly so much slating of the players/manger, and writing them all off midway through a game - like it was their fault we were down to 10men. They didn't stop working all night and would have been very easy to lose that game. Superb effort to get themselves back into it and take the lead in ET as well. Shows a lot of togetherness and spirit from the team - they are certainly playing for the manager and each other. Also good to see their heads didn't drop even for an instant. Promising performance.

We do need to stop practicing with 10men though...

I think Broja suffered from playing on his own up top and JWP at right back rather than looking for passes in midfield.

He also had a couple of poor moments, a poor pass to tella when both through

A great dogged and tactical performance against a really average and unfit Swansea side.

Has the gulf between the Prem and the Championship opened up even further or are they just really bad?

not playing for a month can't have helped. They are not a very good side full stop though. We'd of won by 3 or 4 if we hadn't gone down to ten. It was so easy.

When Long and Moi came on, I knew immediately they were definitely the men to win it for us.

Despite my earlier post, I certainly wouldn’t begrudge either the accolade of their part in a Third Round ‘Hugh Fisher’ moment.

Deserved win. Swansea were crap, even if we weren't great we still had more quality when it counted. They were very nice to play against.

JWP great shift at RB and Long very good as a sub.

Stuart Armstrong gives the ball away too much in the centre.

But ultimately...imagine Ralph will be very pissed off with Valery. Unprofessional and made what looked like a comfortable game into a massive slog.

It wasn't unprofessional... it wasn't a foul. His hand brushed Obafemi's shoulder and he fell over. It is the refs fault, not Valery.

Pulling on the shoulder or arm is a foul, today's incident was not a pull. His hand brushed his shoulder with no force and Obafemi collapsed to the floor like he'd been shot.

It was a foul every day of the week in that kind of position. If he didnt want a second yellow he should have let him go, as he wasnt getting the ball anyway.

First lunge so early in the game was stupid.

I think he has run out of chances now.

But why brush his shoulder? Silly really. No need to risk the other guy diving with no VAR to put things right.

It was unprofessional, and represented his time on the field. It was a very soft foul but we all know it’s a foul nonetheless and once it gets given it’s only going to be a yellow. Stupid prat getting booked inside 3 minutes, stupid prat for putting himself in that situation inside 30 minutes.

Curious who will play rb on Tuesday. I definitely don’t want to see Valery in a back 4 again.

If we don't have any of Livramento, Walker-Peters or Valery... I'd be tempted to play Diallo at right back rather than Ward-Prowse or Stephens. Diallo would still give us some attacking threat and pace in fullback areas that we'd miss if Ward-Prowse or Stephens were there and it would keep Ward-Prowsein his best position. I know shoe horning Diallo there isn't ideal either.

First lunge is partially due to forster’s abominable kick.

2nd is stupid but unless there was foot contact I missed, it was the barest of shoulder taps.

valery has looked ok in a back 3 this season and in the past at wing back. So don’t think he should be out of chances completely.

I'd go 352 and keep JWP at right wing back (assuming no KWP or Tino).

Foster

Stephens Bednarek Salisu

JWP  Diallo Romeu Perraud

Redmond

Tella Broja

It's a win and deserved I think... Swansea fought hard and should be praised but they didn't really have the legs or the level.

Pretty much in control even with 10 men...not too sure about the second yellow for Valery but he needs to learn from his mistakes as he's not a youngster anymore.

I think the team did ok, nice for Longy and Redmond to get a goal each...Stu Moj & Diallo got some good mins ... Adam A. is having a bit of a nightmare but I have a feeling he'll bang a few in the next games.

Let's hope for a nice home draw ... COYR

Silly.. Saints don't get home draws in Cup matches.

Tough game. Valery owes JWP a pint. Longy earned his wages for atleast a few weeks with that. Broja and Arma anonymous.

Diallo quality, all in all good work from the lads, showed cracking spirit.

He’d be wasting his money. James is teetotal

It was a foul all day long. Any ref would have given it. I said to my mate that Valery shoud be subbed when he got his idiotic first yellow. Disaster waiting to happen.

I've been impressed by our team spirit and organisation when we've gone down to ten men recently against Spurs and Swansea. It's a very big improvement on what happened against Leicester and Man United.

When did we last lose a game with both Forster and Elyounoussi in our team? We always seem to get good results when they both play.

A hand brushing a shoulder is not a foul. There was barely any contact, let alone enough to put off balance a grown man and make him fall over whilst running.

After Valerys heroics against Tottenham I was hoping he’d start to push on, unfortunately he’s back down in the world of mediocrity today, feel it’s probably time he’s moved on now.

JWP showed every inch of his quality today, exceptional at right back.

thought we looked pretty comfortable all game today and felt we’d come out on top I’m the end.

it’s a shame the sending off blunted our charge, otherwise I think it would have been a stroll

There was absolutely no need for him to make any kind of contact and give the player a chance to go down. As soon as it happened in real time it was obvious he was off. Like Salisu the game before, after the first yellow you just knew there would be a sending off. Just use your brain. Even if he hadn’t had a heavy touch and was through on goal, it is always better to leave it to the keeper to deal with and if they score we still have 11 men on the pitch. Very unprofessional and probably shows why his career keeps stalling.

Plenty fall down without even a 'brushing' from a hand. And it was a foul because the ref gave it, at which point the second yellow was a dead cert.

So does Ralph. Once again another really poor performance when going down to 10 men. Swansea we’re shockingly bad and we sat back and tried to cling on to a 1-0 win.

Thankfully, we pulled out finger out and showed a bit of fight when we went 2-1 behind.

Think we need to get another loan right back if Tino has torn meniscus that’s about 6 weeks if operated on

Can’t we ask for it to be postponed? We’ve got 3 right backs out, covid cases and not fair we should have to play a match so soon after playing extra time with 10 men

Is it just me or has Adam Armstrong contributed absolutely fuck all since he’s been on?

Must admit he did not do much but do feel slightly sorry for him. Last game he gets moved to left wing with team down to ten men for a lot of the game and played very well there. This game, down to ten men he comes on at right wing, and we won.

It is hard for him to show his worth in those situations and if Long had played a decent ball he probably gets a goal.

I doubt we'll be signing a 4th natural right back. We'd still have Walker-Peters,  Valery and Ward-Prowse until Livramento is back. What happens to the 4th right back when Livramento is back?
