Did the job, made hard work of it after going down to 10 but regained control of the game eventually.

I wouldn't write Valery off just yet, he was playing well up to that point. Yes silly to lay hands on but he'll learn...... somewhere else I suspect.

Two similar sendings off, they need to work on that.

The suspension for 5 yellow cards means Walker-Peters is suspended only for Premier League games, not FA Cup games. He missed today because he has Covid, not through suspension. He is suspended vs Brentford on Tuesday.

Correct. It’s the softest of fouls but everyone knows if you put your hands up like that as the last man you’re just putting yourself hugely at risk. Especially when the ball had already almost gone through to the keeper. The whole move was just brain dead defending from him.

Ralph didn't make two stupid tackles and get sent off you mug. Stop with your ridiculous crusade. Ralphs subbing of Diallo and Long changed the game and his decision to put jwp at RB was great one. He deserves a tonne of credit. 10 men is always hard but we dug in and won.

As for the game, some resilience from Saints. Valery really should know better even if the second foul and booking was a soft one. Stuart Armstrong still not 100% fit, Shane Long still showing he has value for the team, Romeu a bit slack with his passing occasionally  and as ever we really should finish our chances.

As somebody who was there when Hughie Fisher scored I'm happy to ride our luck  and hope for a home match next round. Who do people want?

Hard to read a great deal into the game, at about 20 mins it was a doddle. It was going to be an utter stroll.

Then Valery does what Valery does, and why he'll never be a decent player. Lost count of the amount of times I've seen him done in the same way and the same position, the guy doesn't learn.

It was a weird game from that point on. We lost our midfield as JWP had to slip into RB, and we also lost our balance as we had no real right wing back presence so we lost our ability to switch it. It became a very niggly game where Swansea had a lot of the ball but to be fair they didn't really do a great deal with it, it was fairly comfortable for us in the main. Arguably, even with 10 min, we should have gone 2, 3-0 up with the chances we had (Notably Stephens).

The main take away from that game is the character, one negative put against this team for so many years, but we showed it today. We didn't play well, it was very disjointed, we had so many bad things go our way (red card, equaliser, going behind) but we still fought to win it. Got to credit us for that, and credit to Long who came on and arguably changed the game. That's the impact you need for your subs when you're down to 10 men, he stretched the game.

He's a bit of a terrier type, but there's no real quality in there is there.

Some of his attempts to provide attacking width were beyond embarrassing. That is crucial in our set up, you need to be able to provide a threat. He looks hopeless in that part of the game. Defensively a little dodgy as well, but as I said he's a bit of a terrier and isn't afraid to get into oppo faces.

I am very interested to know how Small is progressing. It would be great if he is genuinely pushing for a game towards the end of the season.

* Claimed we regularly play 3-4-3

* Didn't know Ward-Prowse has had a solid number of cameos at right back

* Didn't know whether we had any substitute full backs on the bench

And my absolute favourite - when referring to Ward-Prowse's birthplace, said there can't be many from Portsmouth that have done well for Southampton.

Nigel had a background in physio which helped his judgement in that sense, you'd hope our physio's would be a bit stronger with Ralph if there was wear and tear showing up with Tino.

Covid after effects can be substantial, his game is built on stamina, seems like the combined effects of Covid and injury (meaning less fitness training) have taken a toll on his stamina.

What else did we learn? Valery is not a very intelligent footballer. How stupid do you have to be to put your hands on the attacker a) when you're on a yellow and b) when he's obviously over-hit it and there's no threat? Think your point about Valery was already pretty clear, his inability to position himself correctly when playing as a full back, and some other things have already told us as much. Yes he has some natural ability and pace, Ralph has been persistent with him, but I am guessing this might be the final straw and we will not being seeing him again, unless we find ourselves left with only 11 fit players, think most of the U23 squad will be ahead of him for future game time.

You say that but Long and Elyounoussi came on in the forward positions and looked much more of a threat. Not sure if he's low on confidence, struggling to adapt or not actually that great. 

As we know, Che struggled in his first season but he still contributed with his hold up play and good passing. I'm just not sure what Armstrong brings to the table.
