Teddeer Posted 31 December, 2021 Share Posted 31 December, 2021 Newcastle might struggle to sign players in the January window - who'd want to go to a club where Covid 19 is rampant and players are going down like flies? Best avoid the place like the plague until their very own epidemic clears up 🙂

Dell McDellFace Posted 31 December, 2021 Share Posted 31 December, 2021 I know these are "unprecedented times", as we keep being reminded, but the whole postponement thing needs some serious scrutiny. It's so open to abuse. Imagine you have a vital game coming up and you have a bit of an injury/infection crisis and: A player who is one booking from suspension "earns" that booking in the last minute of a game Fit players are told to play recklessly in a training game Deliberately mixing the infected with the uninfected, as rumoured at Tottenham recently! Physio being asked to exaggerate the extent of a minor injury And it's almost impossible to police most of this behaviour. Luck always played a big part in the outcome of a season, although this has arguably been dumbed down by VAR. If you are plagued by injuries, it could be that you have players who are prone, poor training and recovery methods, but luck is a huge part. The more you take out elements of luck and chance the more sterile the games becomes. It's a slippery slope - just make them play some of their youth players, who knows - they may uncover a new gem!

In the latest 4 week figures, just as an illustration, among 18-30 YOs, there were 163k cases vaccinated, 52k unvaccinated. The double jabbed rate in those groups, according to the same report, is approx 60%. Oh do keep up. Why do you think they are pushing boosters so much? The improvement in protection is dramatic. The current wave of infections has been impacting more the younger age groups who are generally less vulnerable, and they don't know the impact on older age groups. Yesterday I dashed out to get some LF tests for my mum as there is a positive case in her block of older people's flats and the person has been in the comunal lounge in the last few days.. If not getting vaccinated only impacted yourself I'd say fair enough. But it does have an impact, like many anti-social behaviours. Bad luck in getting covid is one you can accept, but outright stupidity I find difficult to accept. I shall be there on Sunday if it goes ahead, taking reasonable precautions and going by car (SW & Southern Rail have already made that decision for me!).

Kenilworthy Posted 31 December, 2021 Share Posted 31 December, 2021 In almost any other season this game being postponed would not cause any concern. But we have never before had a case where a struggling club goes into the January transfer window with the capability to effectively upgrade its entire team (with the possible exception of Manchester City post takeover in 2008/9 and they were not struggling). If the situation does not challenge "the integrity of the competition" I don't know what does.

Yeo, I’m keeping up , thanks so much for the advice. I spend a good deal of time looking at the best info I can find. ONS data, qualified medics and statisticians for example. The infection rates are high in all age groups, vaxxed or unvaxxed, partially vaxxed, have been for ages. Some findings are showing that booster efficacy declines after 10 weeks, and the first two weeks are discounted ( and show high infection rates anyway).and we still don’t have decent all cause mortality comparisons by age and vaxx status. It is completely valid for people to wait for those, and long term safety data. NHS staff faced with the sack probably had to think long and hard about this too,

They have a first team squad of 27 and then a further 12 in the under 23s that are over the age of 20. That means even with the 9 injuries/Covid, they still have a squad of 30 to choose from. Are we supposed to believe that they've had 18 more Covid cases/injuries since then to take them below the required amount?

MAY-Z Posted 31 December, 2021 Share Posted 31 December, 2021 It’s amazing the differences in 2 sports today in the big bash cricket today, Sydney thunder had an outbreak, were left with 11 fit players in Adelaide, so played with those 11, even though they had more bowlers than they normally would in their 11. HarvSFC Posted 31 December, 2021 Share Posted 31 December, 2021 The most obvious example of trying to play the system was Crystal Palace last weekend, who didn't get their match postponed. They had two matches in a week, Tottenham and Norwich. Which match would they prioritise a win in? Well, that's simple and they applied to get the Tottenham match postponed, assumedly so that they would have everybody fit and fresh for the Norwich fixture. However, they were denied, the Tottenham match went ahead and they named their full starting eleven from their last match against us in their squad. Assuming they put a few more names down as injuries to the league, otherwise why would they try for a postponement?

Not a huge issue, but these are all the knock on effects so things will inevitably be different now than they would have been had Newcastle not cheated. A total piss take. Also almost certainly going to be played mid week at some point, which is always harder/sometimes not possible with my two young kids so we might not even get to see the game. Really annoyed by this. Run out of posts today so edit to say to answer below, we won't have KWP because cumulative yellow card suspensions can only be cleared in the same comp - that is my understanding anyway. Sergei Gotsmanov Posted 31 December, 2021 Share Posted 31 December, 2021 Does the premier league actually have a formula for calling a game off? Can they independently validate any tests. This potentially undermines the competition's integrity. Of course if the situation was reversed I would be willing on a cancellation but that does not mean that is right. No we wont, KWP is suspended for five bookings so the suspension only counts in that competition (PL), he will miss Wolves (unless Brentford is slotted in 11/12 Jan). Salisu's sending off means he misses the next match regardless of the competition. We should have Tino back however from his knee problem. Of course it will - the Premier League is all about the Product, Newcastle are perfect for the product right now. Forget the gnashing of teeth over Saudi practices not being in line with much of the rest of the world, that was all smoke and mirrors to hide the passing of brown envelopes. Newcastle have £139m to spend this window, and if Howe doesn’t raid Bournemouth for Solanke, and the like from elsewhere. They potentially have the tools to assemble a team to mix things up at the top and create a bit of a story outside the usual “big six” for the Premier League to razzle dazzle, and there being no danger of falling foul of FFP. We are just mere cannon fodder to feed the Premier League Spectacular show.
