I saw some chart showing the usual useless stats that put Macca in the top 5 premier league 'keepers so far this season, so hardly the worst no1 in the top flight.

Considering he was pretty good in our last 4 games before Norwich.

Short memories indeed, thought he was the bees knees vs Watford with that save right at the end!

he's alright Macca, he has saved games. It's just that odd occasion when he looks like a rabbit caught in the headlights

Which starting keepers would you put below him?

The list currently is:

Mendy, Ederson, Allison, Ramsdale, Fabianski, Sa, Lloris, De Gea, Sanchez, Guaita, Pickford, Schmeichel, Raya, Martinez, Foster, Meslier, Pope, Krul, Dubravka.

I don't think Guaita is great, and Foster and Krul have declined but still offer decent experience. Beyond those three I'm struggling to see where anyone can have any debate with a straight face about McCarthy being near them.

Honestly think he's the worst keeper in the league. Maybe Krul just about beneath him. But it's tight. We REALLY NEED TO BUY A GOOD KEEPER

I think that a change of formation might work with 5 at the back and 3 CMs. I think that Tino needs a rest as he appears to have tired in games lately and he is still only 19. If Stuey is fit I would bring him on later or if we are chasing the game, the same with Redders and Broja.

From the press conference

Stevens is back in training, but no chance he will play Saturday - needs more time to get sharpness

Stuart Armstrong still injured and wont play

Mussa is back in training (probably on bench)

McCarthy had a bad game, but Ralf mentioned his match winning saves in other games and wont drop him on the basis of one bad display

Tella still learning and pointed to him being a little careless with possession ("sloppy")

Ralph Hasenhuttl on Jack Stephens: "He is back in training after injury, and it is great to have him back. There is no need to rush him."

Ralph Hasenhuttl on Southampton's record at Liverpool: "We can't deny that Anfield is not the best place for us. I remember the 4-0 there, my first time taking a team there, wasn't as bad as the result suggests. We have won once against them, at home, and we can speak about them at the moment. When you see Liverpool at the moment, they are coming back to their best."

Hasenhuttl on Southampton's chances this weekend: "I don't know what Liverpool changed in the summer but it seems like they found their way of playing and their identity again. It makes it very difficult to take something against such a side, but it is not impossible. I've seen Brighton take a point after being two goals down, and in 99 of 100 games they'd lose that game. We have shown against big teams that we can be a threat and cause them some issues; this is what we've done all season.

Hasenhuttl on whether he will shed tears if he gets a result, like in January: "I don't think so, but lets talk about that later. It is always a pleasure to play against Jurgen Klopp's teams, and it is always one of the biggest challenges you can imagine in football, super tough. Now, with the crowd, it is even harder at Anfield."

On the reaction after defeat to Norwich: "We had a day off on Monday, then from Tuesday onwards we've been preparing for one of the toughest games you can imagine, watching the opponent last night, (Klopp) has saved some players for the weekend. It shows you a little bit about the focus they have for the Premier League this season."

Hasenhuttl on facing Jurgen Klopp: "It is hard to compare our teams because they are at a different level. We are in the same league, I don't want to talk about the Formula One but when you race the top cars, you need good turns to not let them pass. You need everything to get something there, but I can guarantee one thing, we will be brave."

More from Hasenhuttl on the task ahead: "It is better not to waste energy thinking about how it would feel (to get a result). We must first let that happen. But you need everything: the perfect tactics, the perfect referee, scoring a goal at the right moment, having an unbelievable goalkeeper. Everybody needs to be at the highest level."

Hasenhuttl on James Ward-Prowse's 200th appearance: "First of all, congratulations to him; 200 is quite massive. It took a while when I arrived for him to become part of the first XI. I spoke clearly with him about what I demanded, and he showed it quickly. You have seen the progress he's made in the last two or three years. What I like about this player is that when you criticise him, he is very quick to improve. He is open-minded and willing to learn."

Hasenhuttl on competition for places in his squad and the goalkeeping situation: "Every player is under pressure to show their best; if they weren't, we wouldn't be doing a good job. Alex (McCarthy) didn't show his best performance last week; there is no discussion, he knows it, I know it. It is the situation for a goalkeeper; he makes a mistake, it is a goal. But he has made unbelievable saves and has done a great job this season. But he knows he has to show up; two or three bad games is not good for staying in the team."

Would go for something similar but with Livramento at RWB and KWP at LWB. Also if we're going with 5 at the back, we cant afford to have 3 defensive minded midfielders in front of that - we'll never get out of our own half. Stuart Armstrong in an advanced role ahead of JWP and Romeu would have been ideal, but with him injured I would put Redmond in that position just off the front two. 5-3-2 in defence but switching to a 3-4-3 when attacking.

No doubt Walcott will start 😱

I think the fact that our mini run was brought to an abrupt end by a poor Norwich side tempers any optimism many of us might have had going into this fixture. If we'd extended the unbeaten run then we might have been prepared to dream but the defeat to Norwich leaves us expecting the inevitable routine victory for Liverpool.  In Ralph's shoes I'd be tempted to try something different. He could opt to give Forster a chance and hope that he produces an inspired display where everything hits him, flies wide or is kept out by worldie saves. You do see these type of performances. Up front he could try Broja as the spearhead with Adams just behind him in support. Broja has pace and power which could trouble the Liverpool defence and Che is strong in holding the ball. I'm not expecting Ralph to surprise me and he'll likely retain McCarthy and stick with Che and Armstrong.

On a separate note what is it with Stuart Armstrong? He was fit for the two Scotland games but, as soon as a league game comes along, he's got some mystery injury again. Got a feeling there is more to this than we're being told.

He’s worse than all of them.

He’s a backup keeper who has become number one at saints by accident.

Wasn't that mainly Watson?

Basically ruined Forster until Forster has been pretty decent under the new GK coach here?

Watson's the same wanker who was the driving force behind Gunn coming here... Depending on who you believe.

Agree with all this. I'd give Forster a chance to pull off one of those special performances - McCarthy deserves to be dropped after those two weak goals against Norwich. We still need a new keeper. The game will be determined more by Liverhampton than us...if they turn up gung-ho we'll lose 0-3 or worse...if they have a Euro hangover, or just can't be bothered we might battle out a 0-0 draw. Would love to see us do a Watford all the same.

I agree with that, feels like S. Armstrong has been injured or missing for whatever reason every time post international break, its odd. I was baffled when he went on international duty in October having been out for two months.

We need to summon the spirit of Claude Puel, the magician who kept 4 clean sheets against Jurgen Klopps Liverpool side in the 2016/17 season.

I'm not dead against giving FF a roll of the dice, but you do have to be careful when dropping a keeper that is perceived as first choice. If we destroy his confidence, that could create far more trouble going forward. Then imagine that Liverpool turn it on and score a hat full. Dodgy territory. If FF is to get his chance, it needs to be because he has earned it, rather than Macca giving it to him.

Not all together sure how FF can earn his chance by sitting on the bench every week.

If that's McCarthy with confidence I'd hate to see his performances when it's 'destroyed'. If he plays we'll let in a hatful. Slightly fewer with Forster.

I'm feeling like the only decisions Ralph is pondering are at fullback and one of the number 10s.  Macca will play and the spine picks itself Bedders, Salisu, JWP, Romeu, AA, Che.  At full back it all depends if Tino is fully firing or needs a rest.  If he plays then KWP at left back, if he doesn't then KWP at right backhand Perraud at left.  Redmond will be back and I actually think we've missed him.  For the other number 10 I guess it's between Moussa, Ely and Walcott - not the best choice.  I'd personally go Moussa out of those, but I guess Ely has the shirt.  Perhaps he'll go with Diallo again and do more like 4-1-3-2.

The line up we had v city seems likely (with Salisu instead of Jack) - this sees Ely + Redders get the 10 and Tino and KWP the full backs.  We were 8/1 for a draw that day (and 18/1 for a win).  Currently we are only 5/1 for the draw and 9/1 the win.

40 years ago almost to the day (28th Nov 81) I was at Anfield for Moran's 87th minute winner.  That is the time to score a winning goal away at Anfield.  How I wish for a repeat of that.  Our team that day was Ivan Katalinic, Ivan Golac, Nick Holmes, Steve Williams, Chris Nicholl, Malcolm Waldron, Kevin Keegan, Mick Channon, Steve Moran, David Armstrong, Alan Ball.  Ironically probably only McCarthy from the current side would get in that team.

The big sides (specifically Liverpool and City) don't come unstuck often at home. Palace seem to cause City a few issues and I always think that is because when they do get a chance to break (which isn't often) they have players with pace and skill to actually make those opportunities count. We don't have a Zaha, and maybe we don't even have a Townsend type either (pace and the odd worldie), but Redmond and Walcott are going to give you a bit more pace than Ely. Its hard to know how to beat Liverpool at Anfield, but I would certainly be studying what Brighton did well.

not many victories at Anfield, but when they happen they provide tremendous joy. Obviously the Shane Long semi immediately springs to mind, but the 2003 league game, with Ormerod and Svensson scoring, was one that sticks out for me. We were a good side at that time and certainly weren't holding on for grim life, but even so a win there was extremely rare so it was an amazing victory. I missed the 2-3 victory in 1998. Anyone go to that game?

I was there with my daughter. One of David Hirst’s best games for us before his final injury problems if I remember correctly.

I tend to avoid the "big team" away days so have only been to 4 games at Anfield.

A 0-0 draw on the last day of the season which stopped them getting into Europe. Think that was under Strachan.

A 2-1 defeat on New Year's Day when Soltvedt scored our goal and they nicked a winner near the end. Gerrard scored a cracker in the first half.

A 1-1 when Ramirez equalised late on and the Shane Long game.

A pretty good record to be fair and lots of late goals.

The Kat was superb that day! I Wasn't planning to go to that game, but got given the heave ho by a girl the day before, and there was a space in the car , so off I went.  Had a dream the night before where I  asked my dad how Saints got on and he said they won one nil! I replied Wish I'd gone  !

Me and my mate were at that game.

That was the game when their fans were tossing coins and other objects from the tier above while their marshals just stood and watched.

Wankers.

5 of us travelled up yesterday to make a long weekend off it and celebrate a birthday. Got to say we had a brilliant night and the city was absolutely buzzing. Got some weird looks when a group started singing Mo Salah, Mo salah and i responded with SOUTHAMPTON in full voice.

Don't expect us to get anything today but we are determined to have a great weekend whatever happens.

I’m on the way up to Liverpool now, got the 10:01 from Euston and surprisingly I’ve not come across any Southampton fans.

However, the train is packed with Liverpool fans!!!

I didn’t think it was true but gosh it looks like there is at least a solid 1-2k who commute from London!
