They were passing around a piece of paper and reading it before corners. Apparently Dean Smith wrote something down. Andy Townsend called it "embarrassing" on DAZN.

Everything is 'embarrassing' these days, it's the latest football buzz-word.

I said recently 1 goal or 10 it’s still three points. I still can’t understand why we don’t place a speeder in our bit of the centre circle when defending corners. Two villa players would be otherwise engaged to try and prevent a breakaway. Enjoyed the game and so glad I don ‘t bite my finger nails.
My MOTM was Che. He never stopped running.

Andy Townsend is embarrassing. They obviously didn't want our players to read the note Tyrone picked it up from the ground and stuffed it down his sock after one of his team had chucked it away beside the goal.

I like borscht. My wife is Russian (technically not a Russian dish), and her mum makes a lovely one when we go to visit (Burgess Hill, not Russia).

I always thought there was a (slightly) boring debate on it being Polish or Ukrainian.

Unsurprisingly, my wife is Belarusian. She always says that borscht is Ukrainian. Wherever it hails from, I love it too and Mrs Minsk makes a very tasty, and slightly spicy, one. Got to have Smetana in it though.

We are quite used to Saints becoming a one half team, how weird is that? They look like the same players turning out after half time but not in the way they play. Good win 'though but why did we need to go into "panic stations" mode after the break when clearly we were the better team on the day. We need more self belief and that starts with you Herr Ralph.

Two points to take from yesterday. Livramento was poor and needs a rest, the kid is knackered. Too much football, too soon. Good to see you are nurturing our youngsters Herr Ralph!

Sky team said there were 30k at SMS yesterday. There were not! Clear gaps could be seen by everyone all over the stadium, 20/22k tops is my estimate. Yep! I know all about ST seats being counted come what may and so on.

Smetana is a composer and is Czech!

At no point was it panic stations, post about what actually happened not what you wanted it to be just to bash the manager.

What's with the stupid "Herr" stupidity?

Smetana is the Eastern European word for Sour Cream; but it's different to UK sour cream. (Hard to say it is the Russian word as it is the same in Ukrainian and Polish). Best place to buy it in the UK is in a Polish shop.

As for Bedrich Smetana, I think you must mean 'was' Czech (seeing as he died almost 140 years ago).

Our league position looks pretty good now and if results go our way next time we could be well up the table. Never saw much credit given to Che for flicking the ball towards Armstrong, (even though it reached him via a rebound off Villa man) for Adam to score.

Smiths note??

No. Two separate incidents - one was indeed the note, which is indeed a joke (why not just tell the nearest player and he passes it on?), the other was a round white object thrown on the pitch - initially I though it wan a table tennis ball but who knows? Pretty sure it did not have the gravity of a golf ball

I'm sorry but that's nonsense.  The official attendance was 30k, meaning 2k gaps.  There were lots of small gaps but nothing that added up to more than 2k.  To say it was 20-22k is delusional.  That's a third of the stadium.  In order to have that, we would need whole sections to be empty, which was clearly not the case.  Sorry to be so confrontational but have you ever seen us play with 20k crowd @Charlie Wayman, it looks and sounds nothing like last night?  If anything I though the gaps added up to less than 2k.

I'm puzzled why you think there were 12,000 empty seats rather than 2,000! 🤔

He must just be trolling as it was quite clearly a big attendance. There were some empty seats around but not loads by any means.

Most likely Polish from when a huge chunk of Ukraine was part of the Kingdom of Poland

All I know for certain is, no matter how much Vodka you drink after a big bowl of it, the first visit to the small room in the morning you get an initial fright - until you remember the bucket of Beetroot soup you had the night before. 😜

A look at history will show the ever changing borders in europe , once Germany bordered the Russian empire , that area was the Pale of Settlement , a large area which was the only area Russian Jews were allowed to have permanent residency in Russia .

'sky team' no the club announces it, they literally announced the attendance on the loud speaker. No way the attendance was 20k, whole sections of the stadium would have to be completely empty for that to be the case, 2k people will leave gaps and over 30k for a Friday night game on TV on a cold November evening is a pretty damn good attendance IMO.

20k, don’t be such a fanny.
Tino played 10 games why would he be knackered? Let’s give them all a break the poor boys and play the under 23s next game eh?

There is a great podcast on the history of Poland on the BBC In our Time series. Fascinating about how big it was, first state to have an elected King in medieval Europe

There were a few empty seats in the corporate area and I'm not sure the Villa end was totally sold out, but it definitely seemed 90%+ full

Villa end most likely looked like there was space because sat in the ground just before kick off you could see a large amount of them shuffling up to to segregation netting to shout at the Northam, on the other side loads shuffled up to shout at block 1.

As for the bonkers comment above 20-22k in attendance, obviously didn’t attend when we were on the latter stages of our voyage down to League One…………probably hypnotised by the new psychedelic winter ball.

villa pulled the trigger on Smith.

It was inevitable after getting beaten by Saints. Norwich were so scared of us that they pre-empted it!

Seriously I know that Villa fans quite like Smith, especially as he is a fan, but that team, even without Grealish, is underachieving.  If I were Lampard, I'd be looking at Villa not Norwich.

Not surprised Smith has gone.....good squad on paper but in a poor run

as for the attendance on Friday......I was there and apart from a part of the corporate area in the Northam  it was pretty much full. about 30k I would say was about right......20k my arse!

23 touches first half, 3 lost possessions with 2 of those 3 being crosses in our box.

what I liked was the goal came from a haphazard ball forward, Che occupies 2 defenders then a great finish, we spend so much time trying for controlled perfect buildup that defenders have time to react too, the hurried ball also hurries defenders.

Is a bit of a concern how poor we were for the first 10 mins of the second half though

Hit the nail on the head. There is a big place in attacking for high dropping balls now and then. With physical pressure under the ball from attackers defenders find them a nightmare to defend. The inevitable consequence, the ball is headed up in the air but more likely a breaking ball which Armstrong was alive to and reacted first. I remember Johhnny Giles, one of the best passers of a ball ever, some times faced with a packed defence, just lifted the ball into the air to be able to loft it and produce a classic rugby Garryowen dropping ball along the lines of JWP's accidental up and under. Nearly always causing panic. I'm not advocating route one but I am advocating lofting gentle up and unders now and again well away from goalkeepers.

I hate the negative back passing mostly leaving it with McCarthy, who is just about the worst and most innaccurate kicker of a ball around. Opposition are sooner rather than later going to make us pay. The other thing is what are the opposition doing while we do this, putting their complete team goalside and their strikers closing us down.. Towards the end we looked far more comfortable when McCarthy lofted the ball into Villa's half, mostly resulting in them having to try and win the ball with the clock running down and our attackers running it into the corners.

I personally think we should get the ball quickly forward and out wide between their lines giving our attackers the chance to pull defenders around.

Anyone got a running total on the number of managers sacked after losing to us...? :)

Don’t know the number, but none as sweet as when Hoddle got the push.

Think it was after we beat spurs at WHL but even if it wasn’t we took some satisfaction in our part in it.

Lifted this off of Twitter:

Quote

Dean Smith is the 10th Premier League manager to be sacked after a bad result vs Southampton. He follows Roy Hodgson, Dave Bassett, Glenn Hoddle, Mark Hughes, Malky Mackay, Neil Warnock, Claudio Ranieri (twice), Unai Emery and Quique Sanchez Flores.

Yes, remember that in 1986.
