Sky not even trying with this analysis. Just endlessly showing the goal so far.

I’ll watch it all night, purity of strike was up there with MLT’s equaliser v Newcastle for 2-2 and his opener v Liverpool in Bally’s first game as manager, that was equally early as tonight’s.

AA great game overall, Che showed how much all round game he has, held it up, great touch for the goal and a peak Lallana burst where he beat 3 or 4 players first half and set up an attack. KWP and Moi ran riot first half, latter faded a bit. Cash berating Bailey at the total absence of tracking back. I can see why Man U and Bayern didn’t swoop now.

I had a feeling we’d fade second half and need to get more clinical. Good professionalism to see it out and Alex only really one save which was decent but straight at him. Still can’t believe Madeley didn’t send El Ghazi off after the dive but somewhat levelled out by Romeu’s tug on Mings which we got away with. El Ghazi was involved in something else that Villa fans fumed about at SMS a couple of years ago, can’t remember what it was. I think he might have held up play with a dying swan routine and not actually made it off the pitch.

What I will say, what I was really happy about and Im sure a few people noticed was before the game when I saw the subs. We have proper depth for the first time in years. Also impressed with Ralphs subs and the timing of them also. MoM toss up betweem Adams and KWP for me

Just now, Baird of the land said:

Feel at times attacking wise we're too keen to shift it out wide at the moment.

Totally agree with this. AA made some great runs between the cbs and we bottled it and took the safe pass wide. So frustrating. Screaming at the TV to play it thru.

Interviewer just asked  Smith  about a shirt pull on Mings for a penalty. Smith said 100% pen, 😆.

Did I also hear him criticise Stuart Atwell on VAR? Said something about having him as VAR last week too? Assume he'll be sanctioned like Ralph was if that's the case? (I may have misheard of course)

I disagree, we were awful again...we we need to sort our second half performances out.

Villa were always going to improve. Deano isn't an awful manager and he identified what was wrong, and made a change to address that at HT. Credit to Ralph because he recognised the effect this had and made a tactical change to adapt to it. Meant we lost a bit of control and didn't have as much of the ball in the attacking third, but McCarthy was never troubled and the best chance of the half was Ché's header.

Yep, indeed. And Jack will be back after the break. Things coming up roses.

I see lots of people voted Ely MoM. I really dont get it. Can someone please explain to me why ? Im really not sure what he adds and was in the second half always making the wrong decisions.

Man of the match I cannot get behind but for the first time ever in a Saints shirt he looked like a serious competitor. He did fade in the 2nd half though.

Tonight sort of sums up why we throw away so many leads and are down the bottom end of the table rather than the top.

Outstanding first half, partially down to Villa being diabolical, and a lack of composure in front of goal (thinking S Armstrong) meant we made things hard for ourselves.

Second half was very poor though and not for the first time. We seem to just run out of energy, which is a big concern. Fair play to Ralph he did change things up which seemed to help.

A win is a win but I won’t get too carried away. If ings was playing tonight I don’t think we win that game.

Credit where it’s due, we won against what seemed like 12 men (who was that idiot with the whistle??). I’m not one to blame the ref, but he was very poor tonight.

I've gone on about how good their keeper was tonight, but I've got to say McCarthy was busier and faultless.

He's looking more confident every game.

Absolutely shocking kicking tho, has done better this season but too timid and awful distribution

Has Tino been told to stop getting forward? A number of times 2nd half he had the chance to get down the wing but kept choosing to turn inside before losing the ball.

I think he just had an off night.  Let's hope so; would be crazy to shackle his attacking instincts.   He clearly needs to work on defensive aspects of his game and positioning - but at 18, he's entitled to a quiet game.

Tense second half, but the quality of that Armstrong strike deserved a winning result.   There's so much more to his game starting to emerge - the deft touches and flicks; intelligent runs...plenty of pace.    Adams did well and it took a great save to deny him.   Once again KWP played well at LB.  Romeu and JWP solid in midfield; CB's both good on the night.

Well done to Ralph (again) for timely subs and tactical shifts.    Replacing an out of sorts Armstrong with Lyanco beefed up the defence, yet with the pace and drive of the two full backs didn't kill off all attacking threat.   Like wise, Diallo for Elyounoussi who had faded in the 2nd half was the right move and then the late injection of Broja maintained enough attacking threat to keep the Villa defence occupied.

Teally tough for MotM. Could be half a dozen.

Yep. There were some good performances: JWP and Romeu; Macca looked solid in goal; Moi had a very good first half, not so effective in the 2nd; KWP had another good match at LB; Arma excellent goal and ran his arse off; I think I will just give it to Che though, fantastic all round performance.

As for the others: nothing special, nor bad, from Bednarek; Salisu, Tino and Stu not up to their usual performances; Lyanco did the most of the subs (not surprising as he was on the longest); Diallo seemed to struggle to get up to pace (as he did last week) but did a job; Broja put himself about a bit.

Just got back.  Absolutely buzzing.  great atmosphere, proper match under lights. The walk back after a win is a joy.

So proud of the team tonight.  Three things.

1.  In the first half we were as fluid as I've seen us.  Everyone was on the move, we just played them off the park.  Not a huge amount of clearcut chances but the quality of the play with the ball was exceptional

2.  Second half much expected backlash from Villa.  But we weathered it and played without the ball with strength, resilience and heart.  The game got messy and Villa really are an ugly Wimbledon-style team to defend against but we had the character to stand up to them.   We've been moaning about the lack of leadership, courage, identity, organisation, strength and character in holding on to a lead.  We showed it tonight.

3.  There's a togetherness and spirit among the players that is very encouraging.  There's no stars out there, they play for each other.  They are problem-solving together and constantly talking.  They adapted to Villa's changes and Ralph's and they just look like a really tight group now.

That's all I can ask for from my club.

But seeing as it's near Christmas perhaps I can ask for more goals because these 1-0s are hard on the nerves.

He's not the best at distribution.

But, quite remarkably, he's the best home keeper in the league this season at the most important keeper stat - not letting in goals.

It's obviously not just him, Salisu has been crucial in our improved defence too. I think we're looking better at the back than we have since VVD left.

Great goal by A Armstrong, he tirelessly ran all night along with Adams, credit to them both.

Romeu proved his worth once again.

There were a few things that let us down tonight, Livremento had his first poor game, along with S Armstrong and Salisu, the referee, and KWP being one footed, despite having a really good game.

A win is a win but we have really got to get a handle on why we fade so badly in the second half of games.

Great reaction too, bailing Salisu out for that second awful blind backpass to Watkins.

All very nicely said, as ever.

I agree that Saints are playing as a team. There seems to be a good feel around the group in general. You could see it at the end, the way they all congratulated each other. That has to be down to good management.

I also agree about the 1-0 thing. I spent 95 minutes pleading for a 2nd goal tonight. Thankfully, I had a few whiskies to help my nerves.

A couple of flaps too. Their keeper made two worldies. If they had gone in it would have been a whole lot more comfortable. Still. Win. Enjoy a drink everyone.

Great first half, would have been nice to get more goals bit like Watford.
Villa were always going to be better second half, first 10 things weren’t looking good but Ralph made the change and got it back to pretty even.
Top save from the Adams header, Moi should have slipped in Armstrong and the foul on Armstrong when he heads through, good opportunities in the second half.

Last season we were screaming for Ralph to make the kind of changes he made today, with personnel and formation. Ralph has reacted better in game this year, think this is more a result of the options he has from the bench. All three subs affected the game and the change in formation changed the balance of the game in our favour. 5 clean sheets is great, we drop points last season in a fair few of the games we have held on this season.

Norwich next, win that and 17 points with 7 more games to the half way point.

Just to add, Tino had is worst game today, he wasn’t dreadful but did make a few mistakes and not as threatening going forward but he is 18! For the rest of his career, If he plays 10 games like he has and then has today as his bad one, it’s going to be a good career.

Salisu is awesome. He's so tenacious and physical often becoming a wall but at the same time somehow getting a toe on the ball to clear it to a Saints shirt.

My only concern with him is that he has 1 moment a game where he flubs a backpass.

Had three or four tonight, McCarthy hopefully gave him a roasting. He was sound defensively otherwise, but his backpasses were absolutely shocking, reminded me of Wesley. Tino also had a very poor game, perhaps the hype is beginning to affect him. Stuey was also absolutely shocking (and I'm one of his greatest advocates), doesn't look to have regained his fitness, the sitter that he skied in the first half was just awful. Think otherwise everyone played well, perhaps not outstanding, KWP was excellent first half but Villa reigned him in 2nd.

The bit near the end where Watkins backed in to Salisu, he held him there and as soon as Watkins got the ball under control, he stuck is leg around Watkins and toed it sideways to Romeo. Brilliant!

I think Tino got a knock early he seemed to be limping a bit and got rough treatment early on.

Romeu outstanding, ball didn’t stick up top enough but worked hard good subs

I think Lyanco will be some player for us at the end McCarthy dithered he read it got across took charge and good pass forward.

A competent ref and that's a lot more comfortable than it was. The decision to not give him a second yellow after Livramento was running into an open area with Targett caught up the pitch is disgraceful, the decision not to book the dive, which is a certain yellow given the rules is just incompetence. But, he is the brother of Bobby Madley...

Although, we didn't make it easy for ourselves either. Armstrong had the glorious chance from a corner that he skied. Still looks rusty and it's a shame he's going away with Scotland again for the 50th international break of the season. However, Martinez had to make a couple of worldie saves, while I can't remember McCarthy pulling off any great saves this evening, despite our second half performance.

Livramento had an uncharacteristically poor game, alongside Armstrong, but again Livramento should have just been facing Targett down his side from the 15th minute.

Elyounoussi had his best outing in a Saints shirt in the first half and looked like the player we signed originally from the YouTube videos, turning Cash inside and out and confirming why Cash has suddenly declared for the Poland national team. But, the second half he went back to just being solid/dependable.

Again, JWP and Romeu also had great first halves. JWP had a cracking shot saved, played his part in the goal and seemingly ran himself into the ground to make recoveries for the team, while Romeu kept making the Villa attackers look amateurish each time they tried to break. But, both had to play a bit more "professionally" in the second half.

Overall, good, professional win. We can enjoy the rest of the weekend. (And the next two weeks 🙄) Three points from fifth, seven from 18th as it stands. Villa have lost 5 in a row, Ings made the correct career choice, JWP must be seething that he didn't make the same move. Up the Saints!

None of the team were close to poor tonight. The second half was a tough watch but every player gave everything to get the 3 points.

2 good performances in one game. First half was lovely to watch, great passing and movement. Some gorgeous little moves, cutting through the midfield with ease.

Second half Villa obviously got a rocket at half time and pushed the full backs much higher up. We were clinging on a bit until the first sub but then the 3 at the back which allowed our fullbacks to push theirs back a bit.

For all their huff and puff in the second half Villa barely had a shot on target and I thought we dug in and defended pretty well. Midfield was solid, Romeu and Ward Prowse won a lot of battles and kept them at bay despite being outnumbered in there because of the formation change.

Could all have been a lot easier if we'd grabbed the second goal or of the ref had some balls and sent El Ghazi off.

Martinez produced 2 excellent saves, he's such a great keeper. The height he gets on his jumps is obscene and the save from Adams header was truly top class.

Livramento looked knackered after about 60 minutes and the feeling I got in the stadium was that he was nursing a niggle throughout the last 30 minutes.

Brilliant to see us win again and keep another clean sheet. The team dug in, did the ugly stuff well and got us over the line.

After all the covid shit I can't really express how amazing it is to be back at games with the kids, seeing mates in the stadium and watching us pick up points.
