For such an old boy, Long is still remarkably quick.

If he had a decent football brain as well, and knew how to finish, he could have been a really good striker.

He does always give it everything though, and I respect him for that.

It's a long time since I've felt so positive after a loss, but there was so much to admire tonight.

Guys who haven't played much performed admirably, Lyanco was outstanding, Salisu grows with every game, we got a sniff of a RWB/RWB combo on the right, and Ralph got most things right. Theo probably played himself farther down the pecking order; great guy but his sell-by date is pretty much up. Hopefully, the squad will pick Smallbone up because he's shown a ton of character in working his ass off to get back.

And, to set the seal on it for me, a lot of those who drown this form in a torrent of negativity are struggling to find anything to post about.

been saying it from day one. Diallo is quality and is going to shine at this level. Great to have some competition in that CM area.

Not sure if my eyes betray me, but the corners just seem a fraction slower and more of them are in the right spot and that's helping our guys make something of them.

It doesn’t matter who played well tonight as Ralph will revert to his same old same old on Saturday. Despite the midfield looking far more fluid in the past three games the poster boy JWP will be straight back in as well.

Forster was MOTM. Chelsea had 14 shots on target. If McCarthy had been in goal, we'd have lost that game comfortably, at least 3-1.

I refuse to believe that Lyanco was a MOTM candidate. Not after all the experts on here told us that he was a wasted signing after only his first game. Guess its not the first time they've been spectacularly wrong. Hopefully he can push on now and put pressure on Bednarek/Stephens.

Forster was very good, great save in the shootout as well. Its clear we've decided on McCarthy long term, god knows why though. Everybody but the McCarthy fanboys can see that he does the GK basics better.

Our squad depth is so much better this season. Plenty of food for thought for Ralph as there were good performances all over the pitch. Also fair play to the boys stepping up for pens. Surprised Lyanco didnt as he scored a winning one for Brazil u23s in the Toulon final.

One interesting thing it did show was that we could be resilient and effective in midfield without Romeu. Maybe a Diallo JWP midfield with Armstrong and Elyounoussi in front of them is the way to go in the future!

One minor wobble from Fraser but quality aside from that. Pulled off a couple of worldies which I’ve got 100% confidence AM wouldn’t have got anywhere close to.

Ralph will continue to pick McCarthy and Walcott though as he’s blind to their shortcomings.

Gutted to lose like that but what an excellent performance against a top team. Tactically spot on from Ralph and everyone put in a shift.

Special mention though for Lyanco. Considering we've been told by the experts on here who have never seen him play that he is awful I thought he was outstanding. Pace, strength, positioning, composure and plenty of passion. Just going on that one display he looks far ahead of Bednarek already.

Still the end product letting us down a bit but if we play like that for the majority of the season we will be fine. Big if.

why? Adams got a knock. Good job Long was on the bench. What other options were there? It was the league cup. No issues bringing him on in a game like this. The Walcott hatred on here seems a fraction harsh. Isn't he working his way back to fitness?

Really pleased with the performance and the squad depth is helping.

If we can put in these type of games more often we could have a reasonable season but consistency is always our issue.

Most exciting game of football I've seen us play in for quite some time tbh. Really end to end stuff. We owe a lot to Forster tonight - so many top saves. But we looked good going forward as well. I still think we miss a proper finisher though since Ings has gone, as so many good chances get missed. Sadly, no one else in the team seems to have his finishing skill.
But overall, I'm very happy!

Yeah, this is where I'm at. I feel quite sad watching him because he's just not there anymore, he's never recovered from the injury he had in the middle of last season for whatever reason. He's lost his pace and his finishing/touch is still as erratic as it ever was, so he's pretty useless nowadays.

I never saw the sense of signing him on a perm, was nothing more than a club PR bit of a business. I'm not sure why Ralph went along with it, as we've now filled the squad with someone paid quite well, who isn't capable of impacting this level.

Lyanco brought some solid defence tonight, dovetailed well with Salisu, occasionally looked like a Brazilian playmaking CB going forward, and gave us a real threat at corners, not just a token tall man presence.

But he brought something else that we've lacked - and grown too accustomed to lacking - a bit of PASSION.

He's not a "ho hum" type of player, and if celebrating getting a free kick fires him up, it fired me up too.

One swallow doesn't make a Spring, but at least he looks like a swallow.

Mediocre, behave. He's got pace, touch, movement, sees a pass, strong ish, gets stuck in, has a good engine, an eye for goal. Apart from that, he's got fuck all about him.
