Fair point on the Echo / haven’t read it for ages. Still think my point stands -  I’ve not seen anything in the athletic not previously mentioned here or speculated on in the national press. When Carl did it you were getting stuff a million miles more researched and in depth than anywhere else. I thought that was the point of the athletic - fear it’s becoming like the nationals in terms of Saints coverage - but with a dedicated full time journalist it really shouldn’t, especially with a subscription model.

Yeah.  A big part of it is just disappointment.  The Athletic with Carl was just such great value during the season before last and now it's just spilling out stuff you can think about for yourself.

The Athletic were also reporting that we had put a £50m price tag on JWP... a day before he signed his new contract.

To be fair they didn't quite say that. They said JWP was staying but if he did leave it would likely take a massive offer, for instance half what Grealish cost. They implied we would want that but didn't say we explicitly put a pricetag on him.

Latest amazing article from the Athletic - after 3 draws Saints need to convert draws to wins. Brilliant, incisive, deeply analytical stuff !!!

Have they got Dave Merrington writing their Saints content now then?

It's called guessing. Using all the "information" at hand to make a prediction and then write it in such a way as to make it "seem" like they know. It's what 90% of sports journalism and media do. It's all about clicks and advertising and subscription revenue.

Tom Leach should get the gig at The Athletic. Dan Sheldon is very much a hands off journalist. Very much considers himself outside of Southampton FC. With Carl Anka, we all knew he was a Man United fan but he really bought into the club and the fans, and reported as if he really had a vested interest. We know that Tom Leach isn't a Saints fan either but he seems to live and breath it, I've even heard him refer to us as 'we' which was nice.

I'm aware to be a football reporter you don't need to support the team of course but when you're a *dedicated* club reporter it's nice to feel that they care about it as opposed to it just being a job. Feels like a lot of his articles are just going through the motions and he actually doesn't have much to talk about, as per the latest article. Turn draws into wins, Cheers, Dan!

Porto GK had a good game against Atletico. 21 years old so fits into our cradle snatching policy, called up to the recent Portugal squad and the best part... out of contract in 2022.

His teammate Fábio Vieira, an attacking midfielder who was voted the best player in the under 21 euros is also out of contract in 2022.

So out of our range then, will prob end up at Atletico.

I have no idea if Lewis Potter is any good, but Saints need to get their cheque book out and get him at any cost. The opportunity to have JWP, KWP & KLP in the same team cannot be ignored .....

What's Bradley Wright-Philips up to these days?

Helped make Sheffield United a top 10 side, to a team who couldn't win a game after he left. Although, he was replaced by Ramsdale...

I think he's the one that's not getting the desired game time at a top club, who's a good player, especially now that De Gea's back looking like his old self. Four years left on his contract, though. I think they'd want £20m+.

More like £50m+ surely, one of the highest rated goalkeepers in the league and English to boot.

I expect he’d go to a better club than us, unless we try the offering of first team football tactic and then he’d be quite the coup.

Interestingly, Fulham regularly seem to be allowing their brightest youngsters to run their contracts down and leave for a pittance. Both Dembele and Elliott have left for compensation fees in recent years.

I'm actually quite sad about the Echo these days. All they seem to do is rehash stories from other websites

I remember when they nicked transfer rumours from here. “ The Echo understands that Saints are looking to sign.......”

They’ve done it for years. In 2003 I made up a rumour on here saints were trying to sign Gaizika Mendieta from Lazio after he had fallen out of favour with them. It appeared in the echo as a transfer link a week or so later. That was even in the days when the echo was considered reliable

Was hoping we'd go for him in the summer. Will be in very high demand, would be a great addition to the squad though and hopefully an improvement on all the inconsistent wingers we have at the moment. He's already got 3 goals this season which is the return I expect we'll get from Walcott, Djenepo, Redmond, and Elyounoussi combined over the course of the whole season.

Also, we'll need to improve our form if we're going to entice anyone to join us.

This seems very unlike us. That would mean three senior keepers on the books until at least the summer. Unless we have something in place for Forster to move onto?

You can carry 3 if you know 1 is leaving, IMO.

We quite often buy players on the Jan transfer window who are out of contract in the summer.

Would take him for sure. Fraser’s contract is up this summer right? Seems logical to me…

Yep this would be an okay move provided the fee isn't silly... If we are in the mire then he could be the GK we need to convert our draws into wins and get some points on board.

I like the look of him. We should even try to offload Forster the same way if we can perhaps.

Carillo was the last one I think.

Neither of them only had 6 months left on their contract. So I'm unsure which players @Saint Garrett is talking about?

Still think that we can do better than Johnstone, but I guess he's the cheap option. Signing the one goalkeeper who conceded more than us last season stinks of Leicester signing two of our defenders, who now can't keep out goals for them.

Letting in more goals doesn't mean he is worse. Have you considered he may have had a shitter defensive unit in front of him?
